I watched The Dallas Buyers Club over the weekend and thought it was really good. There is this Dune type guy but a cowboy (DC). He is usual cowboy dune type homophob cowboy but bones this crack bitch whore (CBW). CBW give DC aids but he doesn't know it because aids wasn't famous in those days and people though just gays get it. Anyway - skip loads, the drugs he gets in America are not good as the big drug companies just want to promote their stuff. So he goes to Mexico and finds this doc who knows how to prolong Aids life, by a cocktail of drugs, some not approved in USA.

So he starts drug smuggling to sell to the other aids victims. Problem is cause he is a bit Walt White compared to the normal gay people with aids at the time, no one believes him. So he gets this bearsy like trani to be his Jesse (BT). Cause selling drugs becomes a bit dodgy, they find a loop hole in the law, they start a buyers club. It means the drugs are free but you have to pay for a membership.

All in all 8/10

Just seen The Lone Survivor (with mark wahlberg)

good film if you like guns and ammo. Based on a true story and brought it home at the end when you see photo's of the people the story is based on.

Yeah decent film. Think the amount of hits/falls etc they took would of stopped them quicker than they did in the film though.

Watched Dallas Buyers Club with the gf on Sunday.

I liked it, but didn't think it was as amazing as the hype, if I'm honest I preferred Her.

The acting was incredible though, can't begin to imagine how you go about getting as skinny as Matthew M & Jared Leto. Speaking of which Jared Leto really needs to just act, he's an awful musician but a really good actor, I want to dislike him for 30 Seconds to Mars, but he was really good.

Matthew Mc's transformation of late is pretty remarkable.

As something of a 'Hunger Games' obsessive - both the films and the books - there's no doubt whatsoever that I'll be lining up with the teenagers to see this come next November - indeed I can hardly wait:

I've been quite impressed with those films, never read the books. The influences are pretty obvious and there's little original, but it still works well and the lead actress carries the series very well. They were saying on the radio 5 film show that the last book was by far the least enjoyable and that they were surprised it was being made into two films.

Well as far as the Suzanne Collin's 'Mockingjay' novel is concerned I can't speak for the Radio5 reviewers opinions but I'm half way through it now and I reckon it's easily as good as the earlier instalments - different because the story has moved on from the arena and into the wider insurrection as the Districts (led my the supposedly destroyed District 13) rebel against the Capitol - but just as gripping in its own way.

I understand the producers have decided to milk some more cash out the audience by splitting the Mockingjay book into two more films, and that could indeed prove problematic. We'll just have to wait and see I suppose.

You really should read the books too - I'm sure you'd enjoy them.

you might enjoy the first one, but then it's v.much diminishing returns IMO. I remember i was quite excited to see the film when it come out but i thought that was pretty poor too. Me and charlie never agree on anything tho i don't reckon, all the tv shows & films he watches & v.kindly reviews on here i mostly roll my eyes and think i'm never gonna watch that!

The movie bout the last train on frozen earth is a lot better than it has any right to be. It's called icebreaker or something like that. The script was a cut above IMO, I'd like to read the original tho cos I suspect the last minute Hollywood ending was tagged on by American distributors.

Edit: snowpiercer

Edit2: ipad friendly link if yo wanna check out this great movie!

I'll watch until I can get the loco's number, then I will look at my Ian Allan Locospotters book to check if I've seen it before or not.

interestingly it's set in the future where there is only one train in the whole world. In some respects this makes trainspotter job easier but on the other hand it runs on a track that circulates the whole globe and it takes exactly a year to get round, so ur trainspotter would have to sit at Eastleigh station for 12 months in -50 temperatures to get his fix.

Just seen the Coen Brothers latest "Inside Llewyn Davis". I thought that it was a superb film. It concerns the struggle of a folk singer in 1960's New York struggling to make a life for himself. A typical Coen Brothers film and one of their best IMHO

Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk

Saw this one yesterday. Not one of their best. Mixed feelings. Quite interesting. Some sporadic funny moments. The music was really good. Very slow. Not much of a plot. Didn't seem to go anywhere. John Goodman has a spooky role (he seems to be in most of the American films I watch these days!).

Bearsy, you seem to be a Movie buff. I can wholly recommend a Werner Herzog film called 'Even Dwarves Started Small'. Arty lols. Give it a watch and let me know if you think it's a chin stroking master piece or not.

Watched Oblivion last weekend. One of the worst films i've ever seen. Avoid at all costs.

I saw this on a plane.

Didn't hate it, but felt myself playing "other sci fi film bingo".

How many films does this bastard rip off, exactly?

Meh.

I Know Where I'm Going (1947)

I've seen my fair share of old black and white movies but for some reason this utterly wonderful Powell & Pressburger effort has escaped my attention until now - very much a case of 'my loss' as it turns out. As for the plot a remarkably 'headstrong' young women (Wendy Hillier) sets off from Manchester for the remote Hebridean island of 'Kiloran' determined to marry a wealthy industrialist there and secure a prosperous future for herself. However a storm prevents her from completing the last stage of her journey by boat. While she is forced to wait impatiently for it to abate she finds herself in the company of a young naval officer (Roger Livesey) who is trying to get home to the island on leave.

I expect you can guess what happens to these two characters next, but a certain predictability in the plot should not put anyone off seeing this film because the quality of the script, the old fashioned romantic nature of the story, and its utterly charming portrayal of life in the Scottish Highlands is quite wonderful.

I suppose on a site like this attributes such as 'romance' and 'charm' may not rate all that highly in the film going requirements of the average forum member. However do remember that this is a Michael Powell & Emeric Pressburger film, and if you know anything of cinema history then you'll also be aware that recommendations just don't come much higher than that.

A masterpiece.

I saw a pretty ok film called Bad Words. It was pretty ok film. It was called Bad Words.

I also saw this film, and I thought it was good. I liked the fact that Bateman didn't try and nonce Slumdog either, which is generally what films involving cross-generational relationships do nowadays.

PS: I watched The Raid 2 today, and it is very very good. Can't wait for The Raid 3 - set 3 hours before the end of The Raid 2....hmmmmm. Like the fact that all the films are being strung together. Plus for a film that's set 2 hours after the original one ended, they do a f*cking quick job of tying up loose plot ends from the first film and setting up the plot for the rest of the film - takes about 20 minutes in total which leaves just over 2hrs of absolute carnage after that. Great stuff.

I've just watched a movie called "The Conspiracy" on Netflix. It's a thriller about two film-makers who are doing a study on a conspiracy theorist, that get deeper than they'd like when the subject of their film goes missing.

Didn't really know what to expect - the subject matter is rarely treated seriously, but this is a smart film that has got an intentionally menacing tone. It's an amateur camera flick interspersed with speeches and events from history, and while I place no stock in the grand conspiracy theory the film posits, it's a bloody good yarn which should leave the brain cells buzzing after the credits roll. Well worth a watch.

I saw 'The Satan Bug' yesterday, which is a old favourite of mine that has not been shown on TV for some years now to the best of my knowledge. Station 3, a secret US Bio-Warfare establishment hidden deep in the Californian desert, is raided and a lethal virus that if released into the atmosphere might end all life on Earth is stolen ...

I don't have this excellent film in my DVD collection so I watched it via YouTube utterly heedless of any copy-write infringements that may have occurred! Just in case anyone else is interested I can confirm that this link is both top quality and auto shifts so seamlessly between its eleven 10 minute long instalments that you hardly notice them:

PS - If you pay attention you will see that a much loved 'Star Trek' cast member makes a brief (and uncredited) appearance in this film.

The Other Guys.

Not a huge fan of a lot of US comedies, but enjoyed this gloriously stupid buddy cop movie. The comedy here really lies between the two star vehicles, Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg. They have some superb and very quotable banter. A to and fro in which pits lions vs tuna stands out. Game of Thrones this ain't.

The movie also services a couple of running gags. Ferrell's character is inexplicably a babe magnet while Wahlberg's can't get laid. Michael Keaton makes a welcome appearance as a Police Chief that unwittingly references TLC songs.

With effects being what they are these days, the over the top set pieces in this silly film look better than those in Lethal Weapon.

Not a five star film by any means, but recommended nonetheless.

Saw Boyhood on Friday night with a friend.

It's a really interesting concept, filming the same characters over 12 years. It's fascinating watching the kids grow up right before your eyes.

It's a bit of an 'indie' film, so not a great deal happens. And parts did feel a bit contrite, looped story lines concerning the mother. But overall it was pretty enjoyable, and interesting if only for the concept.

Did feel like it was dragging a little towards the end, but that said I was surprised that it was a 3 hour film when I checked my watch.

Also made more amusing by the fact that when I popped to the loo after whilst waiting patiently in line a guy walked out of the cubicle to be immediately followed by a lady. V funny.

Watched Edge of Tomorrow last night - really enjoyed it! Not really a huge fan of Cruise but thought he was great too. Film was really well paced, good action and interesting plot. People complained about it being too short, but I think if they'd bumped the running time up past 2hrs most of the scenes would've just been filler.

Definitely worth a watch!

I watched this old thing for the first time this morning:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mbCPbc2vNk

A fairly run of the mill 'Noir' I suppose but it kept me entertained for a hour or so - which is all I asked of it. Glenn Ford plays a (very) straight-laced police detective investigating the apparently straightforward suicide of a fellow officer. However our hero discovers that there is more to this case than meets the eye and he finds himself up against a web of violence, intimidation and corruption emanating from the local 'Mr Big' and his villainous gang (led by a young Lee Marvin). To break this case he will learn, in the most painful way imaginable, that nothing worthwhile is ever achieved without sacrifice ...

The male cast members performances don't really stand out as anything special, but Gloria Grahame (playing what they used to call a 'lush') is very good I thought. The record shows that her movie career was destined to go into terminal decline shortly afterwards as Hollywood age prejudice kicked in, but in her prime here she displays a level of old fashioned 'star quality' that is perfectly evident.

Just back from seeing Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Takes a little while to get going, but overall, a very impressive sequel to the excellent Rise of the Planet if the Apes.

It's set ten years after the first film, and humanity has been more than decimated. The apes haven't seen any for a couple of years, but events bring some their way and the movie focuses on a fragile, yet doomed attempt at reconciliation (the clue is in the title, people).

What I really like about both recent apes movies is their insistence on being their own thing. There are few knowing nods to what came before, because in both cases, they've managed to cover new ground.

Watched The Grand Budapest Hotel - not a bad film if the missus is badgering to watch something with you :)

i watched that the other day. Ralph Fiennes was hilarious! The bit where the police come and he's chatting with them and then he just suddenly turns and legs it was beautiful, i rewound & watched that bit 5 times over!
