What films are you watching?

Going into hospital tomorrow for major surgery, so need to carefully decide what film to watch tonight - just in case.

Has to be 633 Squadron.

Wouldn't it have been much easier if you hadn't rammed that giant stick up your arse?

Seriously though Alps, best of luck - and make sure you take full advantage of the nurses.

I met my nurse yesterday. I am stuck between a rock and a hard place now, staying in with her giving me her attention and going home to 2 fighting kids and 2 mewling babies.

I was in Fazarkerley hospital a while ago. I was the only person in the ward under 70, being dutifully attended to by a load of scouse MILF nurses.

It was glorious.

In the how did I miss that stakes... (no not an old cult movie for Bearsy tho)

Had nothing on the main telly channels last night and Russia House came up on Star Movies from 1990.

What a well put together film that was. Cracking cast, well acted and beautifully shot on location in Lisbon, Moscow and "Leningrad"

No idea how I missed that on planes or DVD for 12 years.

Just watched 'Take shelter'.

Starring Micheal Shannon from boardwalk empire.

the story of a good man sinking deeper into what he believes is a mental illness and trying his hardest to do what's right along the journey.

keeping his family together, keeping his job...yet succumbing to what his 'visions' are directing him to do.

an incredible film,it is long but stick with it.

i strongly recommend this film, very fine acting and the subject matter is tackled in a very good way.

Watched Hunger Games last night - been put off by the tween hype but have to say was very impressed and was actually pretty shaken by the start of the games - read most f the first book already following it and its pretty true to the book as well

Also gave Team America another look, very very funny - not quite as funny as the South Park movie but still light relief

Watched the Battle of Britain (1969) recently. Always been on my to-watch list. Great film. Excellent effects for the time and a mostly superb cast ( Christopher Plummer is a fine actor normally, but I have no idea what accent he was aiming for in this one ).

As good as the effects were, would really like to see this movie spruced up or remade. Personally, I'd have no problem if they kept the original cast and just replaced the effects shots ( a la Star Trek HD remakes ).

It's the close up shots of the Spitfires Hurricances and ME109's that are the real stars of the film

In terms of a remake, the film condenses so many "bad moments" or "big moments that became turning points" that occassionally it was hard to follow. But the technology must exist these days to make a ripping expanded "mini-series" around the core of the film and the behind the scenes stories

A full on remake would be epic. Mini-series format would suit it well. Get me Spielberg and Hanks! The second episode of Band of Brothers ( the one with the parachute drops ) convinces me they could nail this.

Not proper 109s though. They were Merlin-engined 'Buchóns' from Spain. The nose and spinner don't look right and there's a chin intake.

But a damn sight more convincing than watching a US M3 half track 'pretending' to be an Sdkfz251 in 'land war' films.

On the subject of war films, this afternoon I watched one of the very best war films ever made - Zulu.........

( Michael Caine speaking after the first assault "We must of got 60 of them!", Ardendorf the Boer in reply "Well that only leave 3940 more to go". )

Sleep Dealer.

Well, that was a surprise. The choice. A Spanish Language movie on the TV or the Eng San Marino game. OK it had sub-titles for most of the film (no idea why there were some gaps)

A Sci-Fi style attack on globalisation, from the synopsis I thought 2008 - must be some kind of low budget Matrix rip off.

Except it starts in the reality of a water starved Mexican Village in Oaxcaca (sp?) and progresses

Very very well. A superbly crafted story that is tightly put together on a low budget and well written by Alex Rivera

Strangely not only did I enjoy it but so did FMDP.

Have to agree with the critics, no idea if it would come up on Sky/Terrestial for you guys but thought provoking/picture painting enough & worth a download with a couple of beers

I give it a 6.5/10

seems strange that after such a promising start Alex Rivera has not gone on to bigger & better things

Wiki

A.O. Scott, of The New York Times wrote "Exuberantly entertaining — a dystopian fable of globalization disguised as a science-fiction adventure…. Mr. Rivera — a brilliant young director — takes his audience into a future of “aqua-terrorism” and cyberlabor that I wish I could dismiss as implausible..." in his review of the 2008 New Directors/New Films festival. [3]

Kenneth Turan, of The Los Angeles Times wrote "Adventurous, ambitious and ingeniously futuristic, "Sleep Dealer" is a welcome surprise. It combines visually arresting science fiction done on a budget with a strong sense of social commentary in a way that few films attempt, let alone achieve..." "Sleep Dealer is an unusually thoughtful science fiction film, using the speculative energy of the genre to explore some troubling and complex contemporary issues"........ in his review(s) of the film.

Bucky Larsen: Born to be a star.

I rofl'd.

There are a number of posters on the main board that will no doubt have seen an improvement in their matrimonial situation after watching one of his videos.

Summary? When his GF tells him he needs protection and cuts the end off a straw before melting the end shut with a candle.

Yeah ROFL.

3 movies to report on from the plane

Madagascar 3.

Well for the first 30 minutes you kinda wonder what it is adding to the planet and why you bothered, the Penguins are in and out so quick at the beginning you blink and almost miss them.

For the next 30 minutes or so I started to smirk, especially with the penguins having created a Nuclear Powered Hummer and their whole break the bank at Monte Carlo routine, and then as the new characters develop (The Tiger & The Ring A Flying Marty & Tight-rope walking Melman - lol) (And the scene in the Rail Car with Julien & the Lemurs... squeak squeak squeak)

For the last 30 mins I was that annoying bstd on the plane laughing out loud with the headset on and tbh I absolutely LOVED the whole take the p1ss out the French vibe that ran through the whole movie. Je non regrets - classic. Well worth the watch 7.5/10

Ice Age 4. Hmmmm.

Love the characters as everyone does, some good moments in it but they have to be careful because it could become very stale, Madagascar's French "Villain" wiped the floor with Ice Age's Bill Nighy/Johnny Depp Pirates rip off baddie. 5/10

Watch.

Vince Vaughan, Ben Stiller ++.

Risible.

They tried to make a dumb guys sci fi comedy and managed to make neither a comedy nor a sci fi.

Really was a 2/10 and made me wish I had chosen rock of ages instead

Just saw Skyfall...loved it great story...shock at end...only disappointing thing was the women in it ....

Just seen it at IMax.

If it did not have the Bond "brand" and well developed characters attached, it would STILL have been a bloody good film. Because it was Bond and we are so close to the characters it was a ripper of a movie.

Well done to everyone involved.

Watched prometheus again last night. Still quality.

Found it immensely disappointing despite being immensely thought provoking.

All of the above, really. The film plays with some fantastic concepts, looks amazing but is let down by a lot of the writing, especially characterisation. Elizabeth Shaw is the closest thing we've got to a sympathetic character. David certainly isn't that; but he is interesting to watch. The rest? Mostly cardboard cut-out characters or scenarios; the cocksure captain, the frosty commander with daddy issues. Just contrast that with Aliens for a sec; which sort of did the same thing but leaves the viewer with an indelible impression of who each character is. Hicks? Honourable blue collar grunt. Gorman? Inexperienced field commander promoted above his station. Burke? Utter utter snake who'd sell his own grandmother to get ahead. Prometheus has that in bits; the captain and his cronies were good lads - but generally, I haven't bonded with the people in Prometheus as much as those in Aliens.

I don't buy the characters in Prometheus as much because they make spectacularly bad decisions. That bit where matey removes his helmet? That's stupid enough, but the fact that everyone else does it afterwards is just insane. Yes, it might be breathable. It might also contain some weird alien virus you don't know about and can't detect with your sensors. The ginger geologist and his mate p!ssed me off too. What do they do, exactly, apart from moan and make bad calls? You don't see them in action. Hell, I think even Gorman took a couple of xenomorphs out before popping his clogs.

That all said; fascinating universe. If they can conjure some decent character moments; this series has a potentially much bigger canvas to play with than the films it sets up.

Hmm. And I thought I was the kid pointing out the Emperor was naked when I posted that I found it cliched and fell asleep on the plane........

Although I did get the DVD in Duty Free & plan to watch it shortly... (If being back on Sky TV with my Golf buddies doesn't get in the way as we set up the DP World Championship at the end of the month!)

Meanwhile... cor...

Any Given Sunday was just on the box. Haven't watched it for years. What a cracking film it is (and what a cast).

Is that rant by Pacino to Fox over dinner one of the greatest What is Sport all about moments ever in a movie?

13 years old now and totally not dated and the final Pre Match speech? Hell our team, Nige, and all users of the main board could do with listening to that one more time

Lets see how the Peter Jackson re-make of Dambusters turns out before we support anyone touching Battle of Britain.

For me, I am not sure they could get a cast with enough gravitas together for a BoB re-make. That cast was eye-watering.

Interesting that Skyfall has been commented upon on here, BoB was produced by Harry Saltzman and directed by Guy Hamilton, both of which are more famous for the James Bond movies.

Watched a load of enjoyable junk over the weekend.

Lockdown is apparently based on one of Luc Besson's original ideas, but I'm having none of that. It's Die Hard in space for the most part, redeemed by a Rule of Cool finale. Not very original, but a good enough movie.

The cheesefest continued with Death Race 2, a direct-to-DVD prequel of the 2008 remake. Suffice to say, I had no expectations whatsoever - but it's decent enough for what it sets out to be, and is chock-full of goofs and continuity errors.

I think my fave error is in the very first Death Race. There are 9 cars. A mob of convicts have to run to the motors; first 9 into the cars are the racers.

So it's quite surprising to see them do WWE-style shots of these random drivers posing with and stroking the cars they actually ended up choosing. Particularly as three of them died within 5 minutes of getting into their cars!

Death Race 2 is simultaneously competent and gloriously sh!t. Has my seal of approval.

Just seen skyfall - excellent movie.

If I wanted to shoot someone in the head what I would do is spend 5 years researching the underground tunnel networks of London, then I would blow up M16 offices so they have to relocate MI6 to Churchill's old war bunkers, then I would get myself arrested so I could be taken to the war bunker, then I would escape from under armed guard so I can run through the tunnels and crash a tube train, then I would shoot my way across London and into a secure government courthouse where I know the person will be so I can try and shoot them in the head.

That's what I would do. Lot of people would just sneak into their house in the night, but I wouldn't do that.

Finally found a copy of Ill Met By Moonlight at my local library. It's one of just a few films by the interesting British film-makers Powell and Pressburger ("The Archers") that I haven't seen before. It's set on Crete during WWII, and tells the true story of the kidnapping of the Nazi general who commanded the German occupying troops. It features Dirk Bogarde and Marius Goring.

Like someone else in the film managed to do?

Wasn't a huge fan. Far too much metaphorical old vs new bull****. I'm still not convinced on Craig as Bond to be honest.

silly film but visually immense to watch, on the big screen anyway. As you say, fantastic universe and one which I want more of. Getting the DVD for the extras and give the movie another go.

Went to see Sightseers last night... utterly bizarre black comedy from Ben Wheatley and Edgar Wright about a couple from the midlands who go on a caravan holiday together and end up going on a killing spree.

Dark, twisted and completely unpredictable; it fuses the gritty realism of a Shane Meadows film with the off-the-wall humour of comedies such as Julia Davis' Nighty Night, and does it to absolute perfection. Well recommended.

What you talkin about bear? Movies ain't real dude! Not everything is a documentary. You don't think the ewalks would really help out Leia do you? That coke head would be on the BBQ with han quicker than you could say echiwawa.

On him and her (far inferior to peep show) this week they got 3 pizzas for a fiver. Even if it is from a mate, that would barely cover his petrol costs. If my mate wanted free or cheap pizza, I'd say ok but you've got to come and get them.

Also instead of moaning about not having beer and having to look after a kid for a 4 pack, they'd just got get some.

Have you seen Madagascar? Those animals are just not going to get along in real life dude. Besides, the lion is just going to sleep all day.

Sometimes you just have to accept the artist licence, realise its not a docudrama and just enjoy the ride.
