Went to see Somers Town with my GF last night. Shane Meadows' latest film. Quite enjoyable actually, very light-hearted story about a young lad (Tomo Turgoose) on the run and living rough in London who strikes up an unlikely friendship with a Polish lad who has come to England with his dad. It works in a kind of 'odd couple' way though there isn't much of a story to it. I'm glad I gave it a chance really. I didn't enjoy This is England, but I did like Dead Man's Shoes so I find Meadows a bit hit and miss.

 

This one is erring on the side of 'hit' - 3.5/5

Been off work for a week with the flu and between the sobbing and wailing, i squeezed in a few films (all watched through my special insomnia vision)

 

postal - sick, crass, over-the-top attack on everyone and everything. i quite liked it, hollywood has made many worse films than this and there is a rare pleasure in seeing cutesy children being shot in slow motion. worth a squirt.

last temptation of christ - scorsese's low budget but very powerful christ epic. not nearly as blasphemous as people made out on its release. unlike the film above, difficult issues are explored with great care and attention by marty. i think its one of his best.

 

wall.e - very sweet and charming and as scathing on consumer culture as a Disney film will ever be.

 

iron man - much much better than i thought it would be. rd jnr is a genius, the effects are great and it offers a grown up view of America's effects on the middle east. the mountain range has become hollywood's latest lawless wilderness.

 

right i'm off for some cannibal holocaust

I just watched Othello, Kenneth Brannagh does an sublime acting job of Iago.

 

But then again, in my opinion, Iago is the best villain in Shakespeares plays. So it's not hard to do a good job of him, as he is an amazingly developed character.

 

Was looking at my Henry VI DVD, with Kenneth Brannagh in the title role, sitting on its shelf last night. I'm just getting round to the mood for watching it again. Excellent cast and a super film too, which requires one's attention. No half measures here, and Brannagh is superb in it too, IMO. Made me weep during the battle scenes, when I first saw it at the cinema in 1989. Unto Southampton, aswell...!

Started watching Patriot Games on UKTV Gold last night whilst waiting for MOTD to start. Forgot what a crap film it was. I mean the yanks really did their research on Britain on this one didn't they? Just after the shootout at the start when the police turn up, you can hear whistles! Police whistles that is!! So in 1993 our Police were still using whistles were they?? Later on when Sean Bean's charachter is being transported from London to a Prison on the Isle of Wight, his escape happens in Kent, yes Kent!! Who travels from London to IOW via Kent ffs? Of course there is a chance that some of the American audience have actually heard of Kent eh? :mad:

REC, very impressive spanish zombie-fest movie and going in a completely different direction, I sat down and watched Empire Of The Sun for the first time in years and thoroughly enjoyed it... I appreciated it more now than I did when I was a kid 'cos, understandably, I didn't quite "get" the film back then...

Finally got round to watching City of God a few days ago. Outstanding film. Can't really say much more than that. If you haven't already seen it then I suggest you get hold of it as soon as possible.

 

9/10.

 

Good going. My fave foreign film ever. Done so well.

 

I got the TV series but sadly it doesn't hold up to the levels of the film except for maybe a couple of episodes.

 

A second film is coming out though in Nov I believe.

Just watched Pan's Labyrinth again on C4, although I've seen it a few times. I love this film so much. Sheer fairy-tale fantasy contrasted with some brutal violence, with a heart-breaking bittersweet ending. So brilliantly produced and acted and visually stunning from start to finish. Probably my fave foreign film of all time.

Amateur - I think it came out in about '94 or so, but I'd never come across it before. Kind of a comedy thriller, although that doesn't really sum it up at all. Very slow and poised, about a man with amnesia and an ex-nun. Kind of 'about' spiritual redemption, I suppose. Great soundtrack too with Sonic Youth, MBV, Yo La Tengo...

 

Anyhow, it's very good.

Recently seen:

 

Dark Knight - Thought it was quite good. In running with Batman Begins and the whole 'Dark' Batman.

 

Forgetting Sarah Marshall - Teh Mrs choice, wasnt actually that bad for a chick flick. Russell Brand is quite funneh in it.

 

21 - Great film, loved it. Very clever too.

 

Wanted - Again, very original. Nice twist and I liked this film a lot too.

 

Other amazing films I love:

 

Shawshank Redemption - If you havent seen it, you should be shot.

The Hurricane

Minority Report

Man On Fire

The Butterfly Effect - Very good concept

Secret Window

Gothika

Lord Of The Rings (all)

Saw (all)

The list is endless, however if on the off chance you havent seen any of the above I would highly recommend you do see them!

And last night I watched The Edukators, which is a German film about a group of anti-capitalists who break into houses and rearrange furniture. Really good film this, intelligent and funny. Reminded me a little bit of Withnail & I, in terms of atmosphere (rather than in terms of quotable gags).

Finally got round to watching it last night after meaning to for many many years. I thought it was every bit as good as it is regarded to be. I often find with films that are based on true stories (as this one was) that the storyline itself can be somewhat lacking, so it is very important for the producers to focus on the fine detail, the atmosphere and setting of the film, and most importantly the interaction and the dialogue between the main characters, and this is what the Coen brothers do so brilliantly.

Well then why does it state at the beginning of the film that it is based on actual events, and that the names have been changed out of respect for those who died? :confused:

Street kings-not to bad but all been done before.

 

Doomsday-just a poor mad max rip off didn't expect to much from it so not to disapointed.

 

Dark knight-really enjoyed this one far better than the first one,and Heath Ledger steals the show.

 

Mr Wood****-for some reason i watched this on sky the other day and have to say i enjoyed the good childish humour.

An absolutely superb film. Would definately make it into my top 10 of all time. If yo haven`t seen it also try "The Lives of Others". Different type of story but almost as good. I am sat here watching "Mongol" at mo. Excellent movie.

Saw the Fly the other night, thought it was very good, although I'm sure it had more of an impact on the audiences in the 80's that it does now. Still gross in parts though.

 

Last night I saw Caddyshack for the first time. Sadly I fell asleep halfway through it. :-(

Ha, I watched far too many movies from the 80s when I was younger! Watching Alien as 8yr old scared the beejeebus out of me.

 

But did like the Blob and The Thing with Kurt Russell = Aceness!

For some reason I have watched plenty of rubbish films too.

 

I have seen Critters 1, 2, 3 and 4! Watched the Ghoulies on one of the free movie channels a couple of months ago and I can't believe I actually thought it was good.........................still watched it all the way through though!

Just watched "The Black Hole" for the first time since I was a small kid. I don't remember being confused by it back then but wtf was that ending all about?

 

I watched a bit of that yesterday - brought back a lot of memories. I used to have a Maximillian toy when I was about 7 and I loved it.

 

Lastnight my GF and me sat and watched Jacob's Ladder, which I remember watching when I was about 17. What a superb film.

I watched the remake of 'The Andromeda Strain' with my ten year old son at the weekend. It made me want to put my foot through the screen.

Yep, same here. I've watched it so many times, yet it still draws me. I can also watch the original The Thing very easily too. Great b/w film and very well acted by a cast of B-film and TV actors.

Have you seen the Orphanage? Same director as Pan's Labrynth. I have a copy of it but nto got around to watching it yet. Its spanish subtitled I think.

Yes. I saw it at Harbour Lights. I may be wrong but I don`t think that it was directed by the same guy. I think he was executive something-or-other, but it is a superb piece of cinema. Not quite as scary as most critics said but still makes you jump. More with what you don`t see than what you do! Spanish Cinema is strong at the moment. Also look out for "Volver" with Penelope Cruz - another cracking piece of work (her AND the film!).
