saint_stevo Posted 9 March, 2009 Share Posted 9 March, 2009 After a weekend hoon up to Bournemouth, the motor sounds rather rattle-y in the mid section.......Took to a car enthusiast friend who said it sounds a bit like the Catalytic converter. Great. Love this Golf.... I have noticed a loss of power in recent weeks also, would this point to a dodgy Cat or am i barking up the wrong tree? *SIGH*
Ponty Posted 9 March, 2009 Share Posted 9 March, 2009 Could be. The centre of the Cat is ceramic.

Ponty Posted 9 March, 2009 Share Posted 9 March, 2009 The ceramic can break up, block the exhaust to some extent and rattle like mad.

Ponty Posted 9 March, 2009 Share Posted 9 March, 2009 Try eBay, new ones are expensive.
Handyman Posted 10 March, 2009 Share Posted 10 March, 2009 If you go to "a garage" you will pay through the nose. As Ponty said, there are suppliers on ebay. You could always try GSF. Be sure that it is the "cat" as they are not cheap where ever you get them. Get someone who REALLY knows to check it out first before buying any expensive bits that you may not need. I'm not saying that it isn't the "cat" but wouldn't you feel sick if it turned out to be just an exhaust hanger broken allowing the exhaust to rattle against the body of the car. A part that usually costs less than a £1 or two.
Pancake Posted 10 March, 2009 Share Posted 10 March, 2009 would this point to a dodgy Cat or am i barking up the wrong tree? I see what you did there... Back on point, the same happened to my sisters Golf last year, the ceramic bit in the cat. crumbled and she needed a new one (well, thats what her local garage said, might be wrong but they know the family and are usually not ones to rip us off)

Handyman Posted 16 March, 2009 Share Posted 16 March, 2009 Sorry Stevo, I have been unable to reply as we have been off line since my last post on here. We have just changed ISP's and the transition was far from smooth! I guess you have sorted your problem by now.

Post-it note Posted 16 March, 2009 Share Posted 16 March, 2009 i am just still driving around with it making a racket! will it get worse? or do i just need to get it sorted pre MOT? It will get worse and might fall off. Do you have breakdown cover? My exhaust was corroded inside and around the CAT, the noise got gradually worse until it gave way and snapped at the CAT, then spent 90 minutes waiting for the AA. Wish i'd got it fixed when i knew there was a problem.

Handyman Posted 17 March, 2009 Share Posted 17 March, 2009 i am just still driving around with it making a racket! will it get worse? or do i just need to get it sorted pre MOT? Stevo,I have an acquaintance who owns an MOT Station/garage and will put your car on the exhaust gas analyser to check the emissions and also put the car on the ramp to check the rattle under the vehicle. He will honestly advise you whether or not you need a new cat. He said that he would do this for £15. So if it's OK thats all you will pay. I guess he would quote you for a new cat if you need one. PM me if you want to take it further.
