fromthedell Posted 8 March, 2009 Posted 8 March, 2009 i see that there was only 16735 fans at yesterdays game to watch a team 2nd from top seems very poor to me i reckon if we where 2nd we would be looking at around 28.......30 thousand what do you lot reckon
Block 5 Posted 8 March, 2009 Posted 8 March, 2009 Their fans were awful. They hardly sang at all. Mind you, we weren't much better in the 2nd half!
Berkshire Saint Posted 8 March, 2009 Posted 8 March, 2009 I can't remember being in a worse atmosphere to be honest. Their fans were shocking but the Saints fan weren't really up for it either for some reason. I don't think we'd get as much as 28-30,000 if we were in their position, even in the play-off season a couple of years ago we still only average around 23,000 I think.
Andy_Porter Posted 8 March, 2009 Posted 8 March, 2009 There wasn't any atmosphere in the second half, was the worst i've seen at a game in ages.
fromthedell Posted 8 March, 2009 Author Posted 8 March, 2009 if i remember right the play off season was nothing special as we kind of struggled all season and only made play offs by winning last 3 games and we where never in the top 2
EFM Posted 8 March, 2009 Posted 8 March, 2009 if i remember right the play off season was nothing special as we kind of struggled all season and only made play offs by winning last 3 games and we where never in the top 2 Yes that was a strangely dreary season really until the run at the end. From my recollection we didn't play particularly well (at least not as well as anticipated) and were one of those sides in the middle most of the time with little to get excited about. I agree with another poster above exactly, in that if we were in Birmingham's position and form we would be getting 28,000-30,000 every home game. I cringe at some of our attendances but so many factors have contributed to them being low whilst BCFC don't have any excuse. I don't personally hold with this "small club" idea. Our average in the Prem was, I think, the 8th highest in the country one season. Maybe that was the season we finished 8th! But it still puts a lie to the idea that we don't have the potential support of a lot of clubs who consider themselves as "big clubs". It doesn't take much for their support to drop in bad times either.
Andy_Porter Posted 8 March, 2009 Posted 8 March, 2009 There's not a chance we'd get 28k+ regulary in this league. It's sad but a massive chunk of our fanbase couldn't give a toss about the championship. If we where in Birminghams position we would be getting about 23k~ atm.

If we where in Birminghams position we would be getting about 23k~ atm. But Andy, we averaged around that following relegation with a mainly mid-table and mediocre season. I think it just needs a spark of hope for a lot of fans to show up. Ps Bet we get over 23,000 on tuesday? And we're 22nd!
Saint_clark Posted 8 March, 2009 Posted 8 March, 2009 if i remember right the play off season was nothing special as we kind of struggled all season and only made play offs by winning last 3 games and we where never in the top 2 Wrong, we were second at one point about half way through the season. We were always above 10th.
stkev7 Posted 8 March, 2009 Posted 8 March, 2009 Birmingham City are another one of these clubs that think they're so much bigger than they actually are. Tin pot club with no soul!
Fan The Flames Posted 8 March, 2009 Posted 8 March, 2009 if i remember right the play off season was nothing special as we kind of struggled all season and only made play offs by winning last 3 games and we where never in the top 2 After the golden weekend where we won and all the other results were the perfect combination to open up a path to the playoff zone.
Chez Posted 8 March, 2009 Posted 8 March, 2009 Birmingham City are another one of these clubs that think they're so much bigger than they actually are. Tin pot club with no soul! how big do you think they are? You only have to look at their attendances when they dropped to the third tier to know that they have a very decent following indeed and are far from `tin-pot'. Its hard to explain the low crowds this season but as I understand it they have played poorly at home the entire season and their fans are just sick of watching **** despite haing multimillion pound owners who keep a tight reign on their own spending.
Rattlehead Posted 8 March, 2009 Posted 8 March, 2009 I didn't think there were as many as 16,000 in Brum who had more than 1 x week benefit money, so they've done well IMO.
lordswoodsaints Posted 8 March, 2009 Posted 8 March, 2009 they have had their critics this season even though they are flying high.the fans dont like the negative football and are fed up with 1-0 wins.i suspect that this negativity coupled with them playing us (bottom of the league) resulted in their poor home crowd. i think if we were in their shoes we would be puling mid 20k crowds however and whoever we were playing.
Stu Man Do Posted 8 March, 2009 Posted 8 March, 2009 Wrong, we were second at one point about half way through the season. We were always above 10th. Really? Best I can remember us being was 4th. I think there were several games were we could have gone 2nd or whatever IF we'd won ... same old saints always suggesting the possibility of more and never quite pulling it off!
st_louis_saint Posted 8 March, 2009 Posted 8 March, 2009 how big do you think they are? Its hard to explain the low crowds this season but as I understand it they have played poorly at home the entire season and their fans are just sick of watching **** despite haing multimillion pound owners who keep a tight reign on their own spending. That's an interesting comment. You see, I live and work in Brum, and am obviously surrounded by them (and Villa) at work. I chat regularly with one of the engineers (a lifelong bluenose, tattoos and all) about footie, and I couldn't understand why he wasn't chuffed that they were (and have been pretty much all season) in the top two, and looking good for promotion. His answer? Pretty much exactly what you said. I have to say that I find it bizzarre though. I mean, we all know this division is desperate, and all anyone really cares about is getting out of it, so wins are wins in my book. All I know is that I don't give a f**k how we get out of this division, just as long as we do (in an upward direction, I hasten to add.)
Saint_clark Posted 8 March, 2009 Posted 8 March, 2009 Really? Best I can remember us being was 4th. I think there were several games were we could have gone 2nd or whatever IF we'd won ... same old saints always suggesting the possibility of more and never quite pulling it off! We were definitely 2nd at one point. It was only for a week or so, but I am 100% sure of this.

Saint_clark is talking sh * te.
hypochondriac Posted 8 March, 2009 Posted 8 March, 2009 I can't recall us being higher than 4th in this league.
Saint_clark Posted 8 March, 2009 Posted 8 March, 2009 Well I just checked a programme that was lying around from that season and in that table we were 3rd.
Saint_clark Posted 8 March, 2009 Posted 8 March, 2009 Even third means your point was wrong. I'm still certain that we got to second, even if it was only for one game. Third also proves your point wrong.
saint_bert Posted 8 March, 2009 Posted 8 March, 2009 But Andy, we averaged around that following relegation with a mainly mid-table and mediocre season. I think it just needs a spark of hope for a lot of fans to show up. Ps Bet we get over 23,000 on tuesday? And we're 22nd! Thats because tickets are a fiver. If they were full price then it would be nowhere near that going on previous midweek home games this season.
Saint_clark Posted 8 March, 2009 Posted 8 March, 2009 Thats because tickets are a fiver. If they were full price then it would be nowhere near that going on previous midweek home games this season. Do you reckon we will sell out last home game of the season? As long as we have a chance of staying up, we'll definitely sell out the away allocation at Forest.

As long as we have a chance of staying up, we'll definitely sell out the away allocation at Forest. That is not a midweek game though is it? And to be honest,no I dont think we will sell out the last home game, regardless of wether we have a chance of staying up or not.
benjii Posted 8 March, 2009 Posted 8 March, 2009 B'ham have **** fans. They had terrible attendances in the Premier League too.
Fan The Flames Posted 8 March, 2009 Posted 8 March, 2009 I didn't think there were as many as 16,000 in Brum who had more than 1 x week benefit money, so they've done well IMO. Pathetic
70's Mike Posted 8 March, 2009 Posted 8 March, 2009 funny atmosphere yesterday Over the years Brum has been a cauldron of hate and anger for Saints but yesterday it was so quiet. looks like the days of the zulu's are over
Saints67 Posted 8 March, 2009 Posted 8 March, 2009 Seemed to me that the Brum fans turn up, expect a win, then go home again. They have little or no input to the game and seem totally unwilling to get behind their club. Maybe it's just this season that they are underwhelmed? Would have loved us to have taken an early lead as I believe their fans would have been no help to their team.
Dan Posted 8 March, 2009 Posted 8 March, 2009 There was more atmosphere on are mini bus that in the ground.
westmidlandsaint Posted 8 March, 2009 Posted 8 March, 2009 As I mentioned in another thread I was in the blues end yesterday with my brother-in-law a devoted b'ham fan. Also living up here I can tell you that a lot of there supporters not to dis-similar to us saints fans who have issues with their current board. Also this area has been probably the worst hit during the recession, its a massive manufacturing area and there are firms closing every day and lots of people going down to a 3-4 day working week. The b'ham fans are ****ed off that their board wont lower the prices to get the stadium packed out and people just cant afford to go at the moment. At one point yesterday saints fans were singing "you're support is a pile of ****" to which a guy 3 seats down from me said "you wouldnt believe there gates have fallen from 30,000 to 14,000 would you"

Since we average more than that from a bottom 3 position I would suggest your Brum mate thinks again about the shxit support they have?
benjii Posted 8 March, 2009 Posted 8 March, 2009 If we were second in the league we'd get 25,000 easy, no matter how gash we played.
NickG Posted 8 March, 2009 Posted 8 March, 2009 If we were second in the league we'd get 25,000 easy, no matter how gash we played. or who was in board room
stockportsaint Posted 9 March, 2009 Posted 9 March, 2009 Check this site and scroll half way down to see that this highest we managed in 06/07 was 3rd, just after beating Burnley 3-2 away. http://stats.football365.com/2007/ENG/teams/Southampton.html

slickmick Posted 9 March, 2009 Posted 9 March, 2009 Fair enough, still better than the "never really got that high" that people were saying earlier. But we didn't get as high as 2nd.
Sheff Saint Posted 9 March, 2009 Posted 9 March, 2009 It was a very subdued atmos yesterday all round. First trip to St Sndrews, not impressed. But i was full of cold so a bit subdued myself! Intresting looking at League 1 attendences, only Leeds, Leicester, MK Dons and one other that i can't remember that are averaging over 10k this season.
Berkshire Saint Posted 9 March, 2009 Posted 9 March, 2009 Intresting looking at League 1 attendences, only Leeds, Leicester, MK Dons and one other that i can't remember that are averaging over 10k this season. Huddersfield possibly?
Sheff Saint Posted 9 March, 2009 Posted 9 March, 2009 Huddersfield possibly? Yes, think that its them. Just shows though what a step down it would be. Of course attendances would drop but i'd hope we wouldn't see any/many sub 10k attendances. Even if we struggle.
Chez Posted 9 March, 2009 Posted 9 March, 2009 Yes, think that its them. Just shows though what a step down it would be. Of course attendances would drop but i'd hope we wouldn't see any/many sub 10k attendances. Even if we struggle. I wouldn't bet against that depending on the price of ST's. Over £300 and I think we'll be hard pushed to sell 7000 and as we have seen non ST sales have been very small. Add to this tiny away crowds as well.
ericofarabia Posted 9 March, 2009 Posted 9 March, 2009 Considering they have hardly ever been out of the top 3 all season, they really are getting poor crowds despite the results. Even their local derby matches with Coventry and Wolves only managed just over 17000 and 22000 respectively  Dread to think what sort of crowds they'd be getting if they had our home form and until recently, home performances, to face up to each week Maybe there's about 5000 Zulus on banning orders

Round there, they have Aston Villa, West Brom, Wolves, Walsall ... (add others as you think of any). Saints have a large catchment area if you nominally draw a line west of Fareham (east of that they are likely blue) up to Petersfield then complete a triangle down to the New Forest and we pick up a large (potential) fanbase. 16k may be Birmingham's peak attendance, maybe up to 20k if they make the Prem. Our Prem attendance was 32k. If only we can get back there ....

We have the sea pretty much all around one half.
