Johnny Bognor Posted 8 March, 2009 Share Posted 8 March, 2009 (edited) The beginning of the end........ http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/driving/article5864847.ece It would be so much better to have variable speed limits. For example, reduce the 30mph limit in built up areas to 20mph between 7-9am and 3-6pm. In return, lift the limit on motorways to 90 mph after 10pm to 5am. swannymere Posted 8 March, 2009 Share Posted 8 March, 2009 The question does have to asked what is the acceptable trade off between road deaths and road usage? I think it's well known that road usage is alot higher than it used to be and yet the casualty rate has gone down, so why do the goverment keep banding around quotes about speed which scientists have proven is not the major factor in the majority of accidents, the major factor is lack of concentration. So is it alright to accept a certain number of road deaths ?
Colinjb Posted 8 March, 2009 Share Posted 8 March, 2009 Do the people that set these laws actually bother using the roads at all!? Utter f*cking insanity from a bunch of Nanny state d*ckheads. First chance I have to emigrate, I'm taking it.
Ponty Posted 8 March, 2009 Share Posted 8 March, 2009 It'd be a nightmare watching 50mph (one of the hardest speeds to guess correctly) on the speedo, whilst navigating some of the lanes round this way. I actually crashed and wrote off a Toyota Supra on one such rural lane, less than 5 miles from home, 2 years ago. The limit is 60mph and I was doing less than 40 at the time because of the weather. A SPECS camera, making sure I was doing under 50 would have made **** all difference. Making sure gravel and mud couldn't slip down the embankment might have though. I guess there's not much revenue in actually improving the roads though. Politicians - please **** off.
Weston Super Saint Posted 9 March, 2009 Share Posted 9 March, 2009 The speed cut from 60 to 50 will save an estimated 200 lives from the 3000 odd deaths on the road every year! Seems like a lot of money to spend to save an additional 200 lives IMO. Might be better to invest the money that is planned for the installation, maintenance and monitoring of all these new cameras on cancer research, which could potentially save a whole lot more than 200 lives a year..... Barfy Posted 9 March, 2009 Share Posted 9 March, 2009 I'm probably wrong, not being mechanically minded an' all, but surely this would go against the environmental policies as most cars run most efficiently when going over 50mph, especially on longer journeys? About 57mph.... Which is probably what people stick too when driving just under the 60mph limit
