Dibden Purlieu Saint Posted 7 March, 2009 Share Posted 7 March, 2009 A pretty good performance against arguably the best team in this division. And on the back of 3 straight wins. Wotte out? You must be joking... To be fair I was, I was just getting in before the naysayers did...
Colinjb Posted 7 March, 2009 Share Posted 7 March, 2009 Wow, a tale of two halves. First half wasn't bad, played well. Second half not so much, taking off McGoldrick was a mistake, he was putting himself about alright, something Patterson failed to do. We where terrible in the second half, all our attacks where from the wings, yet every single cross was high, moderately paced and dead easy for Maik Taylor or Jaidi to deal with. Wotte's tactics today where questionable, particularly sending Saiejs up front for the last ten minutes. Dissapointing, on the basis of the first half we could have got a point there. Professor Posted 7 March, 2009 Share Posted 7 March, 2009 We stayed up with 54 points last year. To get 54 this year, with 10 games remaining, requires 5 wins and 2 draws with only 3 more defeats. This is tough, but do-able, and even if we don't make 54, its always possible that one of our rivals in the bottom 6 could have a bad run and slip below us anyway. But if that 4th defeat comes along, at that point fans might want to start planning for the promotion campaign next year!

Interesting that on Radio Hampshire, David Armstrong made the same point that taking off DMG was a mistake, and he said so when the substitution was made - virtually predicting the outcome. Pushing up the defence at the end though was right IMO. There was nothing to lose and the possibility of gaining a point.
ulstersaint Posted 7 March, 2009 Share Posted 7 March, 2009 Postponement of the Watford game could be helpful; we were poor at the beginning of February and will be in better shape for the rearranged match. Last game of the season at Forest - hope we are safe before we kick-off 3 May.
Andoverian Posted 7 March, 2009 Share Posted 7 March, 2009 Not our day but no disgrace. The lads tried hard against a very big robust Birmingham side who to my eye looked destined for a quick trip back to the Premiership. Some of our players looked overawed i.e. LLoyd James, and Patterson but I thought that we maintained our recent improved form to be beaten by just one goal. It's just that we met a team of a much higher stature and ability. Personally I could see absolutely nothing wrong with Wotte's tactics or substitutions. He tried a number of things to try and get that valuable goal with no success. However don't knock the man for tryiing to ring the changes. No complaints from me! After the final whistle the lads looked very dejected which shows they now really care. I hope that Woote can get them back up for Tuesday when I hope and expect them to take it out on the club that I despise - DERBY COUNTY. Bailey Posted 7 March, 2009 Share Posted 7 March, 2009 Birmingham were strong, direct and very physical. They didn't look like the greatest footballing side, but they have a habit of grinding out results which is why they're up there in the automatic promotion places. Their back four is superb. Each player could arguably still do a job in The Prem even now. It was a good effort from Saints, although I don't think we ever really looked like scoring, but we battled away, got stuck in and on another day could have come away with a point. Having said that, Birmingham probably deserved the win, especially considering they should have had a couple of penalties! Anyway, this game was always going to be difficult, it's the games against Derby, Blackpool, Charlton and Watford that are important. Any points today would have been seen as a bonus IMO. Still a long way to go, and plenty of points to play for. It looks as though it's going right to the wire again though!
Charlie Wayman Posted 7 March, 2009 Share Posted 7 March, 2009 This was a game we could never win, a bridge too far after the excellent performances of the past two weeks. We must expect set backs and there will be others but as long as we focus on picking up 12 points we should be OK. Next time out we could win and the others could lose. That's how it'll be on the run in but we must not lose our home games, if we could win 3 and draw 2 that would be great and we should pick up at least one or two draws away, maybe even a win out of the blue. Admittedly it's a bit unnerving when those around us win when we lose but we have to play most of them when we really must deliver.
Charlie Wayman Posted 7 March, 2009 Share Posted 7 March, 2009 On the crowd issue, let's face it Brum have been yo yo-ing during the last few seasons so their fans can be forgiven for not getting that excited at the prospect of going up again this year and down again next like WBA. Factor in that Saints are a bottom three club and a lot if Midlands folk are losing their jobs right now so you get a situation where if money is tight the fans will want to see the more attractive and successful sides. Let's face it you'd probably go and watch Man U, Arsenal & Villa for footballing reasons alone but Blackburn, Sunderland & Middlesbro? You get the point.. we just ain't that big a draw anymore not even at home!
Lets B Avenue Posted 7 March, 2009 Share Posted 7 March, 2009 Sh it game. Sh it ground. Sh it pitch. Sh it atmosphere. We never looked like scoring and the certainly didnt look 2nd in the league. I really hate the place and cant remember ever seeing a good game there. Even the 5-2 league cup win in 78 was poor. Only saving grace was a good parking spot and back here by 7. I may have had a beer or two since. Goodnight.
corky morris Posted 7 March, 2009 Share Posted 7 March, 2009 I was at the game today & thought we played OK upto the last third of the pitch. We started brightly & were probably the better team for the first 10 minutes. That said we were completely toothless upfront. I think we had a couple of shots all game & they were from 35 yards+. You could see their goal coming. They were stronger than us in most parts of the park & their 2 centre halfs showed us exactly what you need in this division. Someone mentioned taking McGoldrick off was a poor decision. Dont agree with that im afraid the dive he got booked for was embarrassing & for that alone he should be ashamed. Patterson was very poor. I think the width of his shoulders were half that of Jaidi or Taylor. Quite why Wotte thought playing him up front instead of Euell was a little strange with guys who are 6ft 2inch+ & 15 stone. Make no mistake - we were pretty poor second half, blues just a bit better. Gillet & JPS were our best players. Surman, Patterson & James were very poor, but the accolade for worst player on the park goes to Smith. What a poor player he is. After 3 wins I read so much rubbish from people saying how some of us who said Wotte was not the right appointment were fools. Well on todays evidence Wotte proved he is better than JP, but not the god they would have us believe. At the start of the season my ambition was to stay up. Getting points at Birmingham was never going to be crucial to that then. Problem is because of mis-management at board & coaching/team mgt level through out the season we have dug ourselves into a huge hole that may be just a little too steep to get ourselves out of. Kingsbridge Saint Posted 8 March, 2009 Share Posted 8 March, 2009 Not completely unexpected. We weren't 4-1 with Ladbrokes for nothing. Derby is big - both for the points and for the confidence. And they are flying with Nigel Clough as their new manager. Going to be difficult Tuesday then, but a win could see us set up lovely for a real good run at getting out of trouble. And boy are we in it right now.
monosaint Posted 8 March, 2009 Share Posted 8 March, 2009 At the beginning of the week I would have taken 3 points from 2 tough away games.
OldNick Posted 8 March, 2009 Share Posted 8 March, 2009 I think 4 points out of the next 2 games is the best we can hope for.We have to keep plugging away.It is harsh that all the others seem to have found form at the same time as well, but thats Saints for you

I can actually see us picking up points away from home which could help with surival. Big worry for me is injuries
southamptonfclegend Posted 8 March, 2009 Share Posted 8 March, 2009 what was ridicolous for me in the NOTW, Wotte said Mcgoldrick was tired after staying up till 3 with police or whatever, YET he still plays?

Leicestersaint Posted 8 March, 2009 Share Posted 8 March, 2009 I was disappointed to lose whereas i would not have been a month or two ago which shows how expectations have changed recently. We can still stay up.
trousers Posted 8 March, 2009 Share Posted 8 March, 2009 This was a game we could never win If that's the case, why didn't Wotte switch to a more defensive starting line-up?
