Discriminated against joining the chat room, but by all accounts that is almost as slow and unreliable as the main site!

So, can I get a refund and only have 3 posts a day? 3 should be enough the way the board is working :(

It is very sad but I keep thinking that I have been left out of the group..

I wonder if I have upset The Freemasons again.:D

Well no,, but if you take 8000 odd posts at 3 a day for 250 days or so I think you owe Steve and Baj roughly £2500.

I am a patient woman, generally.

Today I'm not - can't get into the chatroom (freezes at registration) and, of course, no match thread to read. So I'm having to rely on Jeff Stelling.

Refreshing just brings up 'database error'. WTF is going on?

It seems others are posting on that match thread but I get database error when I try to go into it.

Database error wont happen now, the Chatroom was ****ting on the system resources.

And the error of not being able to access the chatroom was not set by us, but by those that wrote it, and we will be asking for a refund from them and reinvesting the money elsewhere.

PM matt and use the one he set up before.

I dont think a chat room will be the solution, it will still rely on server resources, and with slightly less than the greatest of respect, the amount of users you get on match day is a drop in the ocean compared to our server.

And with slightly less than the greatest of respect you charge for your site and Keith never did and he didn't have the issues you have with the server.

Yes he did.

No he didnt, I had access to the stats then and now. The user levels were the same but the number of anonymous users lurking in order to track the match was entirely less.

Well block guests during matches then.

We may have to

Bloody well should. Otherwise your whole argument / reason for charging goes out of the window. It was supposed to be so you could raise the necessary funds to keep the server and site running during match days. This obviously isn't happening, so you have to question why we were charged for something with no signs of improvement?

I understand where you're coming from re. the stats you are using. But user perception is what counts and currently, there is no difference to the performance pre-charging.

RobM, I completely disagree on you assertion of no difference. Prior to saintsweb, the server would completely shut down, EVERY game, and require multiple reboots just to view *something*. As far as I am aware, yes at the moment it gets slow, but today it was fine, in fact, the server has only crashed ONCE this season.

It's funny how quickly people forget how bad things were.

We are trying lots of different things to increase performance, but the fact of the matter is we have to wait for match day to come around before we can test new config settings / improvements, but people want solutions now now NOW

Whilst I understand that people may be a little annoyed at the matchday service here, I have to say that when you look at the overall services that this forum provides, at £5 a year it equals excellent value for money.

Yes there have been some issues but the Administrator have not hidden and have tried to resolve them quickly while keeping us in the picture. For that I personally would like to thank them.

As for Stanley and his site - his heart maybe in the right place or he may just be pimping for customers to a forum that, although free, hardly comes anywhere near this one - and when I last checked today had 3 people on line and the most ever was 76.

I'm sorry, but for the price of a 'pie and a pint' - I still think that the annual subscription rate to this forum is well worth the money.

There - can't see me getting too many infraction points from here on in...! ;)

I completely appreciate people grievances, really I do, I would feel exactly the same if it was someone elses site I had paid money to access (albeit only £5), (actually, we ALL pay the £5, even me and granty).

The fact is, we CANNOT give solutions quickly. We have moved server twice to find our ideal environment, and the money generated does not come close to the type of server required to handle to load that is experienced on match day. There are many solutions, but as Ive alluded to above, we can only try 1 a week!, and if its a quite matchday, we dont even know if our changes HAVE made a difference.

I'm not looking for a pat on the back or a sob story, but me and granty do not draw ANY money from the subscriptions, and I have basically trashed my entire saturday so I could sit on this server and watch what it does. Yes, my experiences today will help to shape the server further, but we can't give a perfect solution instantly.

rant over.

I'd hardly call expecting improvement over the period between TSF starting and now as people wanting solutions "now now NOW".

How long has it been since you replaced Saints Forever? It must be getting on for two years now!

No, don't agree.

Any improvement has been negligible.

As for your Now, now, now line - you've had what, 35 matches this season?

Baj, today was not fine. I couldnt access any part of this site during the game. I'm not saying this to complain, just to inform you guys how bad it was this afternoon. I cant be the only person whose access was zero, surely?

Indeed.

I don't think I need to respond to Baz's reply to my comments, as everyone else has done that for me. I will though....

Today I received database errors, poor performance and an idea you implemented (Chat Room) failed miserably, resulting in no match day in-game chat.

If you think this is progress and peoples complaints are unjustified I would seriously question your role as spokes person for SaintsWeb.

You take peoples money in return for providing a service. Therefore you have a right to take onboard your customers complaints, not dismiss them out of hand as you have done now. If you're unable to do this or unable to provide the service you promise, you should find somebody else who can.

Sorry mate, it wasn't. Every time I went to refresh, it came up data error, and I had to re log-on.

Simple solution, if the server is not man enougth, go to a better one, and double the subs. Like others, I contributed freely before, and would willingly pay extra, even £20. Try a poll on that!!

I don't think that's a viable solution now though...

We were sold the subscription charge on the promise of a more reliable server this season, and we haven't got it!

It's been covered numerous times already, and my guess is at least half of the current 400odd subscribers won't be renewing next season. So 200 subscribers next season, and this year's figures don't cover the costs!!!

Oh well, I suppose that'll be even less work next season as 200odd people should be able to use the server at the same time no problem once the non members are locked out on a matchday!

i think 9.5p per week is good value for money,i have only had a couple of occasions when i have not been able to get on the site.............i think some of you are expecting a little too much for your money.

Up until 4:25 the chat module was causing performance issues, as soon as it was deleted and i restarted the web and database server, performance was back to normal, just read the matchday thread for comments

This was the first time we tried the chat module. It failed. I am not the spokesman for saintsweb. As for "no in game matchday chat", as i said, this was the first time we tried it, if we dont try it, we dont know its going to work or not, do we. Ill say again, once we removed the chat module and restarted the webserver, it returned to normal. Their were NO performance issues after (i think roughtly) 4:25 today, if there was then it was your connection and not the server. All errors experienced were before this time, including database errors. No one had a database error after 4:25

What testing did you perform on this before implementing it?

None, it was implemented at midday and I gave up my entire saturday to monitor it.

None? Seriously? Was Saturday not a stupid choice of day to implement it then, knowing the load would be higher than any other day?

After the chat room went pete tong I got no-where near the forum. just timed out to page can not be displayed everytime.

Not having a moan just letting you know.

I understand people are not happy but try not to take it personally even though some of the comments seem more personal than others.

Im not sure what your future plans are but i use a web site guy that has access to some really good servers at some really good rates and can put you in touch with him if you wish. He may be able to help or he may not but if you want that as an option then give me a shout.

It failed under load, it was tested wednesday, it worked fine. It was placed live today. Again, I stayed around all game to monitor it. As its a flash chat module, there's no other way of testing it than with users in real time.

Not at all. If St Marys ticket office computer functioned perfectly well all week (when not busy) but crashed on a matchday due to the amount of customers it would be criticised. If the same problem occured regularly it would be unacceptable. This is a football site and therefore it should cope when football is being played. If the site failed to perform and it was a one off then that'd be fair enough, but the situation is ongoing with no sign of improvement. I've been critical but i think this is what is needed because this site charges and is therefore a business. Although it might not be a business designed to make money it's still charging for a service it doesn't deliver when it matters. If the ticket offices performance was as bad on a matchday would you not complain?

Nothing personal, but make your mind up.

(edit) And if you need users to help testing, ask on the forum. State a time when it will be live and ask as many people to log in and talk crap as a way of testing it. Don't implement it a few hours before the busiest time of the week.

Christ sake.

We downloaded it wednesday, installed and me and granty tested it, it worked.

I removed it, we made an announcement we would be trying it.

Saturday morning I skinned it, changed some settings, reuploaded it and announced on the forum

That is the exact timeline of things, sir.

My view, FWIW, is that some on here are being very harsh.

I was as frustrated as everyone else, but I do appreciate that people are managing this site in their 'spare' time and for no money.

If I was paying £100 a year for this service, I'd be VERY upset but, get real, it only costs us a fiver and the guys are doing their level best to make things better.

Let's cut them some slack, eh?

Posted

Ok time to turn this into a Lowe Out thread too now - so in light of the problems experienced here can anybody actually tell me of a viable alternative to this site / forum...???

Posted

btf. they wont cut slack because they believe that the 1.3p a day they pay entitles them to corporate levels of customer service. We are doing our best, it may not be good enough for them, and for that I apologise.

Baj, why are your responses so aggresive in nature?

I get the feeling you've tried everything and are now stuck hence the defensive agression. Is this a fair assessment?
