What problem do we have at left back?

No problem apart from the minor detail that we don't actually have a left-back in the entire first team squad and instead have to resort to playing two of our more creative midfield players in Surman and Skacel there over the past season and a bit.

Lordy, lordy....

Look.

We do not play 4-4-2 with standard left backs the type that you and I probably grew up watching and appreciating.

You just have to go with it and not seek to employ an old-fashioned left-back the like of which our current management team simply do not want or need.

If we continue to look vulnerable at the back and continue to conceed goals that could be prevented by better defending from a player experienced in playing a defensive fullback/wingback whatever you want to call it role, then i would say you might want to reassess your opinion.

Where we have looked vulnerable and where the majority of goals have been conceded is in the air down the middle and from set-pieces!!

I know what you are saying, of course, but really we have looked slightly better at the back this year than last (7 goals better on the stats: 6 conceded so far this year in 6 games, 13 last season at the same juncture) and are blooding younger players.

But our formation now appears to rely on interplay and 'interoperability', not on traditional position-biased football.

You probably saw McG tracking back and tackling against Blackpool? It is clearly the role of the wingbacks to get forward and work the opposition, with the centre-backs, holding player and wide midfielders covering as appropriate.

Sometimes our 'full-backs' are looking exposed and taking hammer through no fault of their own, but of the supposed covering player.

If we get Harte, grand, but I very much doubt he fits the style of play we now appear to be adopting.

Our formation will leave us vulnerable to counter-attacking football, which is why it is incumbent on ALL the players to take on board their defensive duties as well as their offensive ones.

Would it not be safe to say that they might want him if they have him training with us?

So

We need a specialist left back. Very true. We have been pointing this out for weeks.

But Harte is slow.

So just not good enough.

Problem not solved.

With respect, you do not take player training. Jan and his team do.

I would rather trust their opinion.

Indeed if he signs. He could be training for any number of reasons.

But he won't be employed as an old-fashioned left back in a 4-4-2 or I am genuinely a Dutchman... ;)

I thought we lost that because 10 players played poorly. Ashley Cole could have been at left back against Blackpool and we would still have lost (imho).

yea, but with a REAL left back .....

we lost because we gave away a soft penalty whilst our midfield and forwards had a case of the TV jitters.

IIRC the penalty was awarded due to a bad tackle at right-back by one of our MIDfielders, where does left back come into that equation??

Wayne Bridge then... ;)

OR Franny Benali!!!!!!!!!!!

Crikey when I think of people slating poor old Andy Surman at left back and then think of Franny there... to me the difference between Shergar and Munchkin*

But Rupes decides who is signed, not them as is generally known.

Maybe so, but Jan picks the team and will provide recommendations based on trial.
