Ian Harte training at Southampton.

I agree we have to stay in the league but we may as well replace all our youngsters with loanees .

That I am afraid is ridiculous James and Surman must be given an extended run

It's ridiculous playing them in defense, when 1. They are midfielders and 2. They are poor in those positions (fullback).

It is possible. But considering our entire club depends on the next couple of seasons, i'd rather not risk it.

OK fair enough but I think you will find James and Surman will be the first choice full backs unless Andrew goes.

JP is only looking for another forward and is building for the future

He was offered a deal at Wolves but he rejected it. They only offered him a monthly rolling contract.

thats supports my point. McArthy only rates him worthy of a month to month. Hardly a glowing endorsement is it?

Ian Harte lost all ability to run about 5 years ago. he's the slowest fullback you've ever seen, on a par with Jermaine Wright for pace. He would 'get by' in this league but that's all. Personally - wouldn;t want him anyway. McCarthy knows him well as his manager for Ireland and he obviously doesn't fancy him any more.

Lads, this would be an utter catastrophe IMO.

I watched Harte play for Ireland (and his various clubs) for years, and I always thought he was an accident waiting to happen, even in his heyday. He had the pace and turning circle of a North Sea Oil tanker even back then, and I shudder to think how several injury-ravaged seasons have affected him on that front.

He is also a simply appalling defender: dreadful positional sense, dives in, *constantly* gives the ball away sloppily in dangerous positions.

Avoid.

The problem is, people remember he scored a few decent free kicks for Leeds about 7 years ago and think he's still like that.

Well he did offer him a month to month contract which negates the highlighted part of your post. Then again if you mean he 'doesn't fancy him any more' in a different way then I cannot answer that ;)

Oh, never knew that, who is McCarthy in love with now?

If he rated him he'd have offered him a years contract. he didn't. I am very happy that he is not a target of ours. We need a full back that offers pace, doesn't ballwatch, is willing to put his head in and when he finds himself in the attackign third doesn't **** himself and cross into row z. These facets will do fine for now, but if he has a touch of class about him, is an athlete and can score the odd goal now and then we'll be laughing.

We are in the second tier of English football. The `4th biggest league in the world'. You'd think even with our financial problems we'd be able to do better than playing two central midfielders there FFS.

If we sign Pulis I will be fuming. We have Wotton, Schneiderlin, Gillett, Surman, James, Lallana already. What we need is a left back and a right back.

Exhibit A : The Jack Cork thread.

Talk about people only seeing what they want to.

Second time this week I've agreed with an Alpine comment. Just what AS does every time.

As for Harte, I'd be happy to accept JP's verdict, as he will be watching the guy train, and the rest of us will not, although personally, I'll be surprised if he is still good enough. Re the money, if it is one out and one in, we can assume that will be covered in the budget.

If it's true it ties in with my expectation that Euell/Skacel/Thomas will probably be off in the loan window.

Don't see Harte as a total footballing type though, guess we'll see, hope he has some pace left

:) A quality never there in his prime. I thought he had taken over from Thora Herd doing the Stena chair lift adverts.

Sammy Hypia is unsettled, now there IS a man WCDAJFU.

Forget the subtext of Drew Surman moving to Biscuitland, it ain't goona happen, we need him here FULL STOP.

Having rid ourselves of most of the superannuated mob at last surely the last thing we need is to start recruiting the likes of Harte. Shades of Jermaine Wright all over again? At least Sammy is still a force in the Prem, even if in decline. Of course we can't afford him but better to flog the family silver for somebody of real quality than squander what we have on washed-up never were's!

Drew hasn't done badly at left back. He's still learning the position and will improve. How many times did we see people moaning, quite correctly, about us never having a settled side that can gel and improve together. Now we have a chance of that. 4 from svensson, perry, james, surman and cork should play most games in the defence, which will form a better unit in time.

So far, they looked good in spells and poor in spells, but never taken a stuffing of last season's proportions, so it's an improvement. Everyone had an off day against blackpool, is was woeful, but hopefully just one of those things. harte would be alright, but i'd rather than drew. it would be a mistake to drop holmes IMO, so drew would be out the team which is ridiculous.

also, it might be more sensible to use skacel than pay out more for harte.

Drew seems to have made it be known of late that he is

Happy at Southampton

Does not like playing at left-back

That may also be a factor
