Thinking of going on holiday to South Africa this year, just wondered if anyone else has been there? If so what are your opinions on the country?

Any area you would recommend/avoid?

Thanks in Advance

I went for 2 weeks in July last year and thought it was amazing. What areas are you thinking of? Cape town is worth a couple of days, do table mountain and also take the coast rd down to the Cape itself. If you are thinking of game reserves I could try and find links to 2 I did in the Durban area. Stayed in an amazing lodge which was incredibly cheap for what you got. Go for it, you'll love it.

The reserve I went to that has the big 5 is the link below

The lodge I stayed at for visiting there is here

http://www.izungla.co.za I highly recommend this place, I think it worked out about £20 a night or something.

I also stayed at a place called Tala which is worth looking up and has some stunning places to stay. I'd imagine it's more expensive though and is a smaller reserve with less wildlife. Beautiful place though.

Also, if you do get to Durban and what somewhere to stay just outside look up the Makaranga lodge, nice to visit for maybe 1 night.

I spent 2 weeks in South Africa last August and will definitely go back. We travelled the Garden Route from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town. We had a couple of days on safari in the Addo Elephant Park near PE, which was good, but you're never going to see the Big 5there, so if game viewing is your thing head further north (Kruger NP).

If you're into whales, sharks, stunning scenery etc. the southern coast is the place to go. I recommend Plettenberg Bay and Hermanus for whale watching (has to be June-Nov though). Cape Penninsula and Table Mountain are great for scenery. We found that 2-3 days in Cape Town was plenty (and 1 day in PE - nothing much there).

It's a fascinating country, although the legacy of apartheid is still very much there (there are squalid townships around most towns). Everyone we met was really welcoming, without exception.

I did the cage diving with sharks at Hermanus, I'd forgotten that! Quite an experience.

I went to South Africa and kissed a girl and I liked it. Her name was Beth and she had a c*ck. At first I was a bit taken aback, but I was also curious so I just went with it. I fell in love on that holiday. I have been saving my money so that I can move to South Africa and be with Beth forever. I always thought that I would get to be with Beth again but this week I received an email from her telling me she was getting married.

This thread has only served to stir up my emotions on the whole affair.

Plenty to do in Cape Town, 2 to 3 days is nowhere near enough time.

- Robben Island

- Cape Point

- Green Market

- Table mountain

- Gordons Bay

- Stellenbosch

- the Waterfront

I stayed outside Cape Town in Somerset West, we hired a cottage. Was lucky enough to know some locals - the parties were something else.

Go, you'll love it.
