And the forum is still slow as f*ck during matches?

Where is the value for money here eh?

To be fair, mate, we'd got the performance sorted over the last couple of weeks to cope with the then-highest number of users online at a time (about 650, I think) and the server had coped well for the last few games.

Last night, that maximum spiked to 793, an increase of more than 20%, and we've not had to deal with that sort of load on this server before so had no means of testing it.

So whats the plan Steve ?

I realise that its very easy for me to pay a fiver and then moan about connections but when it happens during a game you feel well ****ed off.

Could we not move a matchday forum to a different ip for paid members only ?

As Baj has just said, we're discussing the options right now, and trust me, we're just as ****ed off as everyone else that it was unable to cope last night - it obviously causes us a great deal of embarrassment as well as being unable to access the site.

No reason to be ****ed off, just charge everybody to use the forum, then you can get a server that will cope.

could we only allow the main board to be open during matches, thus removing people from non-saints boards and possibly lowing traffic?

how many of the 793 were not on the main bored

"Don't know" is the honest answer, although I'd be very surprised if it was more than 5-10% of that figure. I don't think I've ever seen more than about 25 people viewing any one of the other forums at any time, and those sort of levels are only likely to be found on the Lounge and Muppet Show boards.

As both Baj and I have said above, we're looking into ways of easing the load at peak times. Hopefully we'll have come up with an answer by the weekend.

Wasn't that 'Plan A'?

Apparently you need to repeat things until your brain bleeds, that's the only reason i can think of for the muppets on the main board:rolleyes:

You should ask everyone to meet on the forum at the same time and start refreshing. Get 1000 and then tweak it so the server can cope with that many. It will never go over that so we should be ok. Sorted

Have you considered closing the corners?

Tp be a bit more constructive, I felt that it eased a lot when someone poseted the link to sky's live score server. maybe therein lies a (partial0 solution). I only refreshed when I KNEW that something had happened at one of the grounds.

All websites can be stress tested...

Steve - without wanting to teach you to suck eggs (but you know me, and expect it anyway, haha) ... simple solutions are:

- Close ALL other forums apart from the main forum during a match

- Make the main forum log in only during a match / all the time

- Remove banners/avatars at peak times / all the time to lessen the server load of bytes dished up upon refresh

etc.

Generally, I find the forum over functional. All I want to do is read comments about the match if I'm not there, I don't want to play games, look at people's f*cking rubbish avatars, look at bloody smilies, send PMs and so on.

Thanks Baj and Steve, very much appreciated lads.

There is quite a bit of negative undertone in this post. Don't hide behind subtext - come out and say what you really feel.

I, for one, appreciate everything that Boj and Eddie do for us Saints fans on a daily basis. I always mention them when I say 'Grace' each evening. Triffic blokes.

It is simple.

Only allow Full Members to view the main site.

You don't need the adverts/banners then, which lessens the load and if people have not paid their fiver, they can't view the site.

Of course I am saying this now as I have paid up.

But seriously, it ain't rocket science is it?

I have to echo the people who say "it's only a fiver" - at the end of the day, I agree in principle that - if we've paid - we should be given a decent service, as was supposed to be the case. However, it's not like those who've taken the cash have done a "New Forest Xmas wonderland" on us. They're clearly trying - I'd suggest some mistakes may have been made, some things not gone to plan, some errors in prediction, etc - but at the end of the day, this is still a site that many use, that is still basically maintained and usually functional, and without it, and those that run it, many would have less Saints info and less of a footie medium generally. It never had to be for free before, and I always chose to donate to those who ran them voluntarily anyway, because I know it's a pain in the ass, even if you think it's only the odd bit of work. Clearly, I didn't approve of certain people allegedly selling out as a club PR device with trips with the club, etc - but this isn't the case here. A fiver for a whole year, well - the vast majority of us earn that in half an hour or less, and have spent much longer on the site than that. Get it on context. Yes, let's keep pushing for improvements, but whinging over things for such a sum is pretty poor.

Chatroom worked well....

Investigation shows the issue may not have been with the chatroom, or at least there are things i can do to optimise it...

Isn't that what commentators do on the radio anyway to let people know what's happening who doesn't have any other access to the game, I say this because some people don't have access to the radio on matchdays so rely on someone elses ear.

I think 1.3pence per day is value for money.

The whole point of the charge was because it was guarenteed to sort out the slowness issues.

i dont care about the 5er, i waste that most days on betting or p*ssing it up the wall etc blah blah

It's about the fact that something which was free, has been replaced by something which isn't and hasn't actually got any better.

If you were happily doing something, and then someone charged you a 5er a year to do it promising better performance etc and it got no better, would you not ask a few questions?

And when those questions/complaints are reacted to in an aggressive and dismissive manner, well how are people meant to feel?

Precisely.

Doesn't help admin dislike me personally, Baj threatened to send me off, and generally dislikes my posting/me.And Stevegrant ended my football career.
