http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_div_1/7908394.stm Ipswich 0-3 Southampton

Two goals from Jason Euell and one from substitute Matthew Paterson secured an impressive victory for Southampton that severely dents Ipswich's promotion bid.

Euell headed home an Andrew Surman free-kick for his first before capitalising on a Pim Balkestein mistake to slot home his second.

Paterson drove in from the edge of the box to complete the rout.

Saints also had headers from Jan-Paul Saeijs and Chris Perry disallowed by referee Andy D'Urso for fouls.

Ipswich boss Jim Magilton:

"It's certainly the worst since I became manager, without a shadow of a doubt. It was three (nil) going on six.

"It was not acceptable. The crowd had every right to voice their opinion.

"You have to have a few words after that performance. You want to know where it came from. It stunned the life out of me. I didn't see it coming."

Southampton boss Mark Wotte:

"Jason Euell has done fantastically for us tonight. I am pleased with him.

"When I started this job I gave him a substitute role three times, and every time he had a good impact - so I put him in the first XI.

"His contract is expiring, so he has personal reasons to play well. He feels confident, like most of the players, and he has done brilliantly."

Superb result and fair play to Wotte...he has earnt respect from the players clearly and he deserves the same from us fans now. At last it is so obvious that those of us calling for 4-4-2 and Euell up front with Saga is the way forward...just a pity its taken so long for the management to catch on. Despite the euphoria at winning 3 on the trot, it is telling that we are STILL 3rd from bottom and serves to remind us just what a huge job there still is to ensure safety. Come on you Saints.

Err, sorry to point the obvious out Mr Wotte, but its WHERE you're playing him now that has made the real difference. Please don't forget this!

Indeed. I also understand that David McGoldrick was considered, by independent pundits, Saints best player at Ipswich until he was subbed [obviously for a change in tactic]. Considering that he has been profligate as a lone striker, all season, this change of position has seen him become a new player.

Decided early on in the season to take two of my Scottish colleagues along to a Saints game and we chose the Blackpool fixture. Having recieved pelters since October about us being relegated by the time we went in March, I am now feeling slightly more optimistic.

GREAT RESULT TONIGHT - WELL DONE LADS!

Just back from Ipswich, what a great performance. What great support, we sang for 90 minutes and I have a very sore throat!!

Euell was excellent again scored 2 and cleared one off the line, 2 goals disallowed (have no idea why).

Just got back, still buzzing. Amazing performance again, everyone did their bit. Euell was absoulte class. It's a travesty that he was frozen out earlier in the season. Our fans were brilliant, non stop singing all game, best away support in terms of noise all season (even with the Ipswich stewards being dicks as usual trying to get everyone to sit down)

The only way we'll go down now is if we get injuries to key players. The team out there tonight is as good as most teams in this league and will win more games than they lose.

Been back an hour or so and having arrived red faced at being caned for another £30 for having the wrong train ticket am rather glad I went. Credit to any Saint who went along today, the vocal support was up there with any other away game I've done this season if not better. All in all about £100 well spent. Can't sleep! GET IN!!!!!!!!

Posted

Just got back to Bath. Missed the 3rd goal as had to leave to get the 2142 train or no chance of getting home.

Good performance, and the one thing that hasn't been mentioned is that Kelvin made 2 very good saves to keep the game at 1-0. Obviously we deserved to win, but he is still proving his worth. Very very happy.

Bring on the rest of the season there is a bit of hope now.

I was Ok when there was no hope - I could cope. But now there appears to be hope again I am dreading coming out from behind the sofa. Been hurt by the Saints so many times before.....keep it going lads.

Respect to Wotte, so far he is definitely exceeding my expectations. I am happy to say that he is well on his way to proving me wrong.

Got back around 1am , to tired to post last night

What a great performance, what was brilliant was that we stuffed a side in a bit of a slump , not so long ago we would have been cannon fodder helping the opposition get out of their slump.

Jason Euell has become a great leader, 2 goals and so my son tells me a clearance of the line, i had gone for a p*ss at the time.

Now a draw Saturday followed by 2 home wins , although Derby will be tough.

Why did we have 2 wait for so long for the penny to click at SMS.

Posted

The Saints winning football games is like waiting to catch a bus - nothing happens for ages and then 3 come along at the same time . I'd like to point out that however good he gets I shall continue to refer to Jason Euell as 'The Mule' , although I now claim I mean it in the affectionate sense obviously .

Ah the morning after the night before......

Just feels GOOD for a change.

We are still in deep trouble, I really hope the team have taken on board confidence but not Happy Clappy complacency, we all know how that can work.

Somehow I think Wotte will keep them more focused on the job in hand, he is still - in his OWN words - a "rubbish manager" because until we are mathematically safe he could still fail to keep us up and again - as he said it is his results which determine how he will be judged.

For now, it seems we finally have somebody who knows what they are doing, doing what needs to be done, and blimey - look at that - it is working. Let us hope it can keep going and get the 4 or so more wins we will need to stay up.

Not happy clappy but boy after a couple of years down in the dumps doesn't even this little spark feel good.

Keep it up guys, we're counting on you to disprove your own theory MW and become the best since WGS and maybe more

Although he has taken a lot of stick this season there were also plenty of people pointing out that the position he was playing in and the formation of the team was doing him / the team no favours at all. This only points to the failure of JP as a manager and it is such a shame that the club didn't act earlier. It seems everyone bar JP could see the problems and lets hope we can salvage this season.

What a fantastic result but what a shame the other results are not going for us I am starting to think I may have to eat some humble pie after Donny at home I was sure we were down I know we are far from out of trouble but I am starting to believe the great escape is on.

What a shame it has taken so long to find out a decent settled defence a few pro's that have seen it and done it some youth and energy and a system thats tried and tested is the formula for success in this league

Well done Saints I am starting to get my pride back

I consider our fans to be a fair bunch.

If the players and manager (and maybe even the Chairman eventually, but that is a long rehabillitation) perform and get the results, we will change our minds about any of them.

Awesome away day, a real ‘I was there’ game; Saints were outstanding from the first minute to the last. Game started brightly with Saints on top pretty much from the off. Players and fans were well up for it and the only surprise was it took us so long to break through, fair play to us though as we kept doing the right things, solid no-nonsense defending, shed-loads of work in the middle of the park, and inventive forward play in just about every attack. Hard to see the reason for the first disallowed goal but no mistake moments later from Euell with a clinical finish beyond Wright for the first. We ended the first-half right on top and could easily have gone in 3 or 4 up.

Ipswich were always going to come steaming out second half and we weathered some early pressure immediately after half time though we were still playing well on the break. As the game became more stretched a Saints second looked inevitable and after a succession of misses (and several top saves from Wright) Euell grabbed a well-earned second; game-over and streams of Ipswich fans to the exits, before Patterson’s excellent late finish wrapped it up. An absolute stuffing for a team that had only lost 2 in the previous 10 and who were playing for a play-off position. No mistake, this was genuine top-2 form, forget the play-offs, if we had played this side all year we would be right up there now!

Davis 7, did the basics well but didn’t have too much to do.

James 7, most-improved player in the side, not too much to do. defensively but seems a really committed part of the new team ethic

Perry and Size, a pair of 8’s, neither put a foot wrong all night, a really solid partnership at this level.

Skacel 7, solid in defence and always willing to get forward.

Morgan 7, not sure R Mid is really his position but he worked hard and played some decent forward passes (he even made a tackle though he didn’t look much like winning any headers!)

Gillett 8, excellent, seems to have really found his position; distribution still erratic but can’t fault his work rate. Looks like he really wants to be out there playing for Saints

Surman 8, the Steady-Eddy of the side, so good you don’t notice him all the time. Fantastic work rate, always taking the correct option; with better finishing from others he could easily have had 3 assists.

McGoldrick 9 MOM, worked his nuts off in defence and attack and really seems to have found his position in attacking-mid. Not everything he tries comes off but he never dropped his head and his defending-from-the-front was the cornerstone of our performance. Great little links with the front two and a real goal scoring threat from midfield (how long since we had one of those?)

Euell 9, same old, same old. Led from the front, prodigious workrate and two great finishes.

Saga 8.5, looked sharp and willing throughout, though he missed two one-ones he would normally swallow. He will get even better now his match-fitness is returning; a real handful at this level

Sub. Patterson, really composed finish (and top celebration).

Wotte-watch. 11/10! I wasn’t keen at the time but I’m not going to look a gift horse in the mouth! Seems to have got us doing the simple things well, welded onto a great team spirit.

Ref watch: D’Urso – superb, easily the best ref in this league.

Fans 10! – just like the old days! Non-stop support, I can’t remember more than the odd snatches when there wasn’t a song going and just about everybody joining in.

Ipswich? WTF? They just didn’t turn up, the fans or the team. I like to see them doing OK but they were a shadow of any Ipswich side I’ve seen previously, can’t see JM being there next season.

PMSL at the thread at the weekend ‘Did RL nearly get it right?’; on last night’s evidence he couldn’t have got it more WRONG! If we had played Skacel (Size) Euell Saga from day one we would now be playing to crowds of 25K+ and sitting comfortably in the top-6.

GGGRRRRRHHHH!!!

I'm finding all this a bit freaky. At heart we fans are simple creatures - win & we love everyone, lose and we hate the world

Me, I love you all today

Another superb result and performance by the sounds of it. Well done the players and Wotte for finally getting them going.

Still early days but fingers crossed that we can avoid the drop.

However its so frustrating to wonder how this season could have been if we had started out with a competent chairman in the first place......

Well done to Wotte and the Saints squad.

Keep up the good work and hopefully we can secure another 3/4 wins in the coming weeks.

Definitely a nice feel about it when you face the world after a few wins.

I am glad that I was able to coach Wotte over the last few weeks.

It would appear that he has been listening to the posters on this forum.

Maybe Mr Wotte you had it in you all the time.

Amazing result. Had a feeling we might win that I didn't want to say out loud. Although I enjoyed the 7/2 odds I got on it. Wotte is doing a fantastic job so far, no doubting that.

What will really count though, is how we react to the next loss, both players and fans. Because it will come, and likely before we're out the drop zone. We have to get over that quickly and keep playing with this passion and confidence. If we can do that, I'm confident of enough wins to keep us up easily.

Yes other teams are winning, but more have been sucked into the fight, and teams without as much ability IMO, like Barnsley and Blackpool. I really think we should be aiming to finish above Charlton, Norwich, Barnsley, Blackpool and perhaps Forest. It would be nice if we could be safe by the final day. Still, we have an excellent chance to stay up and given feelings a few weeks ago that's amazing.

Must must keep Euell/Saga together. Playing well even when one doesn't score. Great to know we have two strikers playing that can get goals.

My eye is on Blackpool and Barnsley, they can both be hauled in I reckon and Derby are not out of it by a long chalk. Remember how we got reeled in last season as well so there may be a club on 45-47 points that has a collapse. Those Blackpool and Derby games look huge now.

Agreed. I reckon Notts Forest have learned how to consistently win again, and I don't think Saints will need to overhaul them to survive. Mind you, it wouldn't do us any harm for them to stumble, but I'm not counting on it.

Don't understand that. In all the relegation battles we've had in the last 20 or so years how many times have the lads let us down?? yup, just the once.

In a relegation battle saints are nailed on favourites to escape because of our form in the matter.

How anyone could interview Burley and not see what he was is beyond me.

Goes to show that Football chairmen and boards are the last people who should be allowed to make a football appointment.

Thank you Portaloo for resigning when you did! (Although you could have done it sooner.)

Or perhaps the decision shouldn't have been his since we had to endure 2/3 of a season watching us fail time after time (despite sometimes being "pretty"). Let's hope we've left enough time to continue the Great Escape.

Well done to the lads - and to Wotte - just shows what playing a sensible formation for this league, and a mixture of experienced pro's and promising youngsters can do. Why didn't we think of this sooner...?!

What Burley was: got us a top six finish and an away win in the playoffs against Derby that under normal rules (away goals count double) would have seen us through to the playoff final. Left us comfortably mid-table and still in striking distance of the promotion places. That's terrible! Errr, NOT!

Let's just enjoy the run we're on now with Wotte and the boys, ffs!

MW just let it slip that Euel's high wages prevented him being picked previously.

I hesitate to mention I said Euel would be our saviour on the tread with that title.

The bit I really don't get is the logic that you pay him NOT to play, and then expect to be able to sell the guy who hadn't been given the chance to put himself in the shop window, expecting to p*ss him off so he leaves for ANY offer at all (why would he?). Nonsense management.

Was a great night last night. I think it was the best i have seen us play all season. We deserved to win by more and should of done with the goals that should of stood and Saga and DMG missing some sitters. How Saga missed that shot i will never know. A lot of us thought because we were not taking our chances they could nick a draw in true Southampton fashion but thank god that did not happen!

But it has to be said as well as we played i have to be honest and say Ipswich are the worst team i have seen play this season. It reminds me a lot of us and how we played earlier on in the season. They were there for the taking and on another day we could of won 0-5 no joke, if we had John or Rasiak in there instead of DMG it could of been 0-10 ;)

I was one of those who was not happy with the appointment of Wotte, didn't think he would make a difference. But he has and he has done everything right. I am not exactly pro-Lowe board and that but Wotte has really impressed me with the performances of the players and he deserves credit for it, the results are what matters and he is getting them. He has a personality less interesting then a fish and more controversial then anyone i can think of who has been at the club, but he can say whatever he wants, he can call us all a bunch of ****ers and i would give him a pat on the back as long as the results continue. He is making all the right decisions and correcting the ones he gets wrong. Morgan last night was awful and he took him off for Wotten who broke up their few attacks, decisions like that are what being a manager is about. If you compare that to Jan who would just bumble along and not change anything etc.

The only thing that really ****es me off is that we have waited until the last 15 games to play like that, took that long to realise Lowe and his grand plan was destined to fail.

For the 3rd game in a row all the teams around us win again but if we can match the teams around us results then win our game in hand we will get out of the drop zone. If you said that was possible 6 games ago i think most people would call you crazy.

The team is finding the form at the right time but we have to keep going. A loss can really do you in and you have to keep winning just to stay in with a chance. If we can continue in the style and confidence we are then i really do think we can stay up. We will obviously not win the 12 games but it is so important that if we lose we forget it and move onto the next one without thinking to much about it. Confidence is key and for as long as i can remember we are playing with bags full of it.

So well done lads, you keep doing us proud!

With me as his mentor we are going places..Well Birmingham for starters.

Glad to see the sun shining at last..I was so pleased when that nice Mr Lowe left the football to people who knew what they were doing..Mr Wotte with Svennson and Ottery are the new team and we might even stay up if we can get at least 3 wins in the next five.

Still a major problem with money which is waiting to bite us soon.

Mr Stanford has not replied to my begging letter yet.:D
