StuRomseySaint Posted 23 February, 2009 Share Posted 23 February, 2009 Where is the best place to look for them at the moment, all the agencies seem to have huge waiting lists, jobs seem to hardly be advertised anywhere! I have heard agencies have literally hundreds of candidates on their database. I have a job, one that I took before xmas, but it was more of an 'emergency job' to see me through xmas, need to get a proper job now. Is Monster etc the best way? ( I work in Sales ) , or is there any other ways of finding jobs?

StuRomseySaint Posted 24 February, 2009 Author Share Posted 24 February, 2009 Why would you apply for a job that you knew you would then turn down Stewart? I don't get it. See this is the thing Hammy, I have applied for loads of jobs before, been offered the job, then turned it down. There is a common misconception that an interview is all about the candidate selling himself, well it works both ways, it is also about the company selling themselves and the position to me. In interviews, I spend almost as much time asking questions to them, as they do to me, a tactic which seems to work well, from these questions I decide whether to take a job if I am offered one. EastleighSoulBoy Posted 24 February, 2009 Share Posted 24 February, 2009 Why would you apply for a job that you knew you would then turn down Stewart? I don't get it. Sometimes you just do. Recently I got to second interview stage. I was expected to come up with a 5 minute presentation about Planned Preventative Maintenance. When I looked around the guy showing me around told me that they had trained him, not a cheap course, in Inspection and Portable Appliance testing. They then would not buy the test equipment (about £1k). If they couldn't afford that how on earth would they properly implement Planned Preventative Maintenance? Easy choice to not proceed with the application at the end of it. Remember that an interview works both ways and some employers tend to forget that they need to sell their job as much as we need to sell ourselves! StuRomseySaint Posted 24 February, 2009 Author Share Posted 24 February, 2009 This is hardly a radical tactic, more like 'the basics' tbh. The point I was trying to make is that you should never go to an interview thinking you are going to take a job if offered. Hence responding to Hammys point about why would I go to an interview and then turn down the job. Anyway, you only work 1 day a week and sleep in till 3pm, so are hardly in a position to teach me work/interview ethics.

My missus loves work and hates being stuck at home, and as such was willing to try anything that was offered. In early December she started looking after her last temp job ended, and after joining 7 different employment agencies, she finally got a temp job in late January, after branching out to different places on the train line. Dimond Geezer Posted 25 February, 2009 Share Posted 25 February, 2009 Q) In the United Kingdom, what is the difference between an Engineer and a technician? Engineers have professional qualifications and are members of professional bodies. They have achieved this via university or many years of vocational training followed by a 7 hour exam, on the passing of which leads to an interview with the aforementioned prof. body and would expect to earn in the region of £40-50k A Technician would have qualifications such as HNC/HND and would expect to earn £35-40k Someone who mends your washing machine, or fixes your car is not an engineer, at best they are Techicians, although they should be described as fitters. Engineers in this country are treated with very little respect, whereas in Europe, and the States they are seen as being on a par with solicitors etc.

I spent 4 years of my life both by study and vocation to become an engineer by degree and society as a whole in this country views you on par with a tyre fitter for it. I havn't received chartered status yet but it is something I am aiming for. It's a real bugbear of mine this. Engineering still requires a lot of "hands on" knowledge in the individual field of the job and so a qualification in broad "engineering" is not often enough to get the best jobs. I never expected myself to be going back into it again but due to the Credit Crunch and wishing to relocate back down south I am back in where I left 13 years ago. A good designer will need a sound grounding in engineering, if not full on experience in engineering himself. A draughsman or CAD operator does not, they just need to bring the concepts to realisation.
