The first varsity games between the two university's, ended in an 18-3 win for SOUTHAMPTON! :D So continuing our winning dominance over the skates!! LOL :D

Do you not mean Southampton University ( a longstanding University of great renown) against Pondsmouth Polytechnic.

Here's a link to the launch statement, even our illustrious clever bods refer to them as 'Skates'.

Also pointing out that we used to own Portsmouth! Spose we do again after Sundays drubbing.

The article contains the following:

Portsmouth workers termed the insult ‘scum’ (an acronym of ‘Southampton Community Union Members’) and in response they were referred to as ‘skates’, a derogatory term for naval seamen.

Clearly very little research has gone into that as,to my knowledge it is incorrect on both counts. The 'union' is an urban myth, and the term 'skates' was a derogatory term used by the navy for the local populace.

Yes S.C.U.M. is a load of bullsh*t, however your wrong about the 'Skate' jibe. It was not a term Sailors called locals (That would make no sense?) Southampton fans 'Cleverly' turned a derogatory term for Sailors used by locals against the very citizens who coined it. :)

The origins of the term then remain open to discussion, for the timebeing I'll bow to your knowledge as its probably a topic closer to you than me ( no offence to you intended btw). The "logic" of sailors using the term was to suggest the locals - presumably the females that is - were merely used for sexual gratification as were 'skates' whilst at sea.

Ahh, never really thought of it like that. I can see where your coming from now. No offense taken, I regularly stick my d*ck in flatfish so if the cap fits and all that. :)

Ok, I don't know who your Uni is, but as my rivalry does not extend to all things Southampton, I have to be fair and say I seen the Southampton University Stags and they are National Champions and Head and Shoulders above most University American football teams.
