Guest Dark Sotonic Mills Posted 22 February, 2009 Share Posted 22 February, 2009 Currently I'm driving a Nissan Navara Aventura 07 reg, done about 30,000 miles. I no longer need a pickup-type vehicle and I'm looking to px it for a new/newer car. I have spent hours reading Which and What Car type magazines and every time I make some sort of decision, something else comes along and makes me change my ming. Knowing how knowledgeable you lot are, can some of you give me some ideas based on your own experiences? Ideally, I'm looking for a large family car, saloon or hatch, reasonably frugal on fuel and nicely appointed (I like my creature comforts) I expect to get in the region of £13-£15k on px and I would prefer not having to spend any more if I can help it. Colinjb Posted 22 February, 2009 Share Posted 22 February, 2009 When you say new? Do you want brand new? If you go second hand you could get something with all the bells and whistles and high spec. Looking at 13-15k, I would suggest possibly a Fiat Bravo.
sotonjoe Posted 22 February, 2009 Share Posted 22 February, 2009 You should be able to get a high spec nearly new Mondeo for that sort of money.
Handyman Posted 22 February, 2009 Share Posted 22 February, 2009 Get in touch with British Car Auctions (BCA)if you want a lot for little money. www.british-car-auctions.co.uk/ Best to go and spend a few hours at one of their many sites. Plenty of choice there and you can browse to your hearts content, until you find exactly what you are want at the price you want to pay.
Ponty Posted 22 February, 2009 Share Posted 22 February, 2009 When does anyone "need" a pick-up truck as a family vehicle anyway? My suggestions; Ford Mondeo diesel - slightly dull but good all-rounder. Jaguar X type diesel - same floor and running gear as the Ford but better looks and spec. Renault Laguna diesel GT estate/hatch - brilliant, brilliant 175bhp diesel lump that's so economical. Renaultsport Megane diesel 175 - Same engine as the Laguna but superb handling and suspension 3 or 5 door available. Anything with a Pug diesel. Or think, screw it, you only live once, and get something you'll enjoy driving, rather than worrying about a few mpg.
Handyman Posted 23 February, 2009 Share Posted 23 February, 2009 Have to agree with Ponty about the Laguna diesel. Drove one in France and found it to be very economical but also nice to drive. Six speed gearbox, big boot space, plenty of room inside. The only drawback is their reputation for poor reliability. I'm told that the later ones are better. Son of Bob Posted 23 February, 2009 Share Posted 23 February, 2009 I'd go for 12 month old Mondeo Titanium X TDCi Estate in black with Privacy glass and 19's. Gorgeous looking, economical, great to drive and hugely practical. Tom Ford ran one for 12 months in Top Gear magazine and he rates it as one of the best cars he's ever owned, by some distance. Guest Dark Sotonic Mills Posted 23 February, 2009 Share Posted 23 February, 2009 When does anyone "need" a pick-up truck as a family vehicle anyway? I used it for carrying stuff for the pub, beer casks etc. I would never have got 17 barrels in a Mondeo.

St Landrew Posted 23 February, 2009 Share Posted 23 February, 2009 i have a pretty reliable golf i could be persuaded to sell if your interested.... I think you've blown the cover on that one Stevo. Perhaps you ought to do a promo series on how good it is to counteract all the negs.
Mole Posted 23 February, 2009 Share Posted 23 February, 2009 LOL at people suggesting a Ford Mondeo. If you've got 13-15k to spend go second hand and get a nice audi a4/a6 diesel.

The early version of the last shape had some gearbox reliability problems but they were done away with by the facelift model.
EastleighSoulBoy Posted 23 February, 2009 Share Posted 23 February, 2009 You should be able to get a high spec nearly new Mondeo for that sort of money. Probably a Ghia or GhiaX at that sort of moolah. I have a 52 plate Ghia X and it's superb. Leather, 6 X CD player, trip computer A/C climate control, heated seats, auto anti dazzle rear view mirror. Plenty of bins for storage. So a newer model should have some enhancements on that.

Would it be the very same car that shares engine, electrics, running gear, suspension, etc. with some of the Audi range?

Lol at people suggesting an older, leggier car that's no better than the Mondeo in the first place! Badge snobbery is pointless unless you have a fashionito complex. St Landrew Posted 24 February, 2009 Share Posted 24 February, 2009 um yes i believe it does the ants are all mine though About those ants. How the hell did they happen, again please..? I believe you had an infestation, not just a few..? I think that incident was one of the reasons I thought you drove a Golf from the mid 70-80's. They were crawling out the air vents, were in my arm rest and would work there way across the dash. No idea how it happened, maybe i picked up an ants nest in my wheel or the like? Are older cars more likely to be inhabited by ants then? I do catch your trail of thought though!

Older cars, by their very nature of being more worn and weary, tend to be less well looked after. Hence the cobwebs, rust and other little foibles that start to appear. I think infestations are special though. Here is a slight case of neglect in one of those older cars :
