Credit where it is due - Wotte

I think everyone wants to win. The only people putting this Club down is Lowe and Wotte.

IF Wotte gets us out of the bottom 3 I may change my mind... but he wont. Chuffed as I am and nice to feel my heart beating loud in excitement yesterday... my head remains fixed on doing Lowe and Wotte down, not my Club.

like you i want to win every game and have a open mind about wotte after improved performances and team spirit under him.

Point one - we have, it's true, but most of those who mutter darkly about Lowe out at any cost to the club go very coy when pressed on the subject

Well they can hardly be that passionate about such a claim then, which therefore renders the need for such jibes to be rather pointless.

& Point two - the two fully paid up nutters in question need a little baiting for their relentless negativity & there are quite a few semi-nutters who also go very quiet (I don't include you in that category btw)

We're talking about a handful at best, which is why posts like yours and SOG's are rather tiresome and somewhat insulting in your insinuations.

It's also quite lame and a bit like those who try and say people are against Lowe solely beacuse of his background, love of hockey etc, which is rather insulting to those who have very valid and well thought out reasons for their opposition.

Cant argue based on yesterdays result. But, can in terms of the whole season and club's youth policy.

The trenches analogy from SOG is interesting. I suppose we need guts and support now more than ever, but ultimately history judges the Generals that slaughtered those who marched over the top. This season will not make a pleasant chapter in Duncan's next book methinks.

No it won't, but it will sort the men out from the boys. If we can keep a steady nerve and fight for every point we could just turn this awful season around.

Fair play to Wotte - he got it right yesterday.

I only hope he can keep that up and it's not a one-off.

He appears to be more capable to be a CCC manager than JP and he has stepped in at a difficult time. So some praise due.

There is something I don't warm to, however - he has an certain arrogance (I did not think his remark re the march was very clever) but there again Clough and Ferguson weren't exactly humble. However, I am not sure I would want to buy a second hand car from him. Next week v Cardiff will be a test which he must pass. To lose or even draw will immediately undo the good yesterday's result achieved.

And did you think the protest added to or detracted from yesterdays atmosphere??;)

And if you're being so demanding that we all stick together and rally round the team, then surely you could make the fcking effort to go to matches:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

To be fair StRobbie, I don't think that either Lowe or Wotte are "putting this club down".

It is in both of their interests to be successful with SFC is it not?

I doubt very much if the people at Charlton are interested in putting their club down. The problem is every club is desparate for success or to stay up. No one is going to roll over and give SFC an easy ride, and why should they?

I want everybody at SFC to be successful because if they are then SFC is. It is a shame that some want certain individuals to fail so they can glory in their own brilliance and foresight.

this is all that counts -would be great to be a character like WGS but how the team does is all that matters for a manager.

Normally i'd agree, but I don't want someone in charge of the team who actually slags off the fans when they ARE supporting the club and are trying to act in the clubs best interests.

He may have Lowe-tinted glasses on, I don't know. But as I said, i'm prepared to give him a chance. As long as he stops talking about things that don't concern him then he will do fine, otherwise it could end up affecting the players - Surman could well have been thinking "well, if I wasn't under contract i'd have been on that march...", so I doubt he would have been too impressed with Wottes comments.

one home win and Wotte is suddenly a genius? I don't think so, I need much, much more evidence than one measley home win. String 4 or 5 wins together and there might be the start of something. Too many false starts. It will all end in tears

I know where your coming from but I dont think anyone is trying to make him out as a genius. All he needs to do is steer us safe this season and he will have proved himself to be no more than capable. If we go on a really good run with 4 or 5 wins on the trot then we will be talking about promotion next season.

I dont want to keep comparing him to Pearson but there are many similarities in our situation this year to last year and Pearson didnt get us going on an 4 or 5 game winning runs yet to some he got hereo status.

Will get plenty of respect if he does as well as Pearson did IMO although I guess there will be a few that will still expect him to jump through a few extra hoops just because he is Lowe's choice.

having now read Connors bit in echo explaining the march

- the purpose of the march was for Lowe and Wilde to step down -over silly decisions like appointing Wotte and for Crouch to be chairman.

I think its understandable that he lacks sympathy with the march - wouldn't anyone with a march protesting over their appointment?

I'll give Wotte credit for picking a team to win the game, choosing the tactics to win the game and err, winning the game. Well done!

However, he has got a long way to go to win me over. To me there is nothing likeable about the man, he has an attitude and an arrogance that automatically antagonises people. Even in his post match interview there was no humility, saying that he left Wotton out and picked Gillett and was 'proved to be right'. I wonder if next week it goes pear-shaped, he'll admit he c*cked up? I very much doubt it.

It must be great living up there in your ivory tower!

Have you forgotten how you used to call for the head of Burley - and briefly Sturrock - at every available opportunity, even when we won ?

Now it seems you have decided that NO-ONE on the planet is allowed to have an opinion against the manager, because you quite like him!

Is it irony or hypocrisy?

not hypocrisy...i gave burley a chance...I really became ****ed off with him after he failed to get promotion..so he had more than 4 games to get my support

as for sturrock..sure, I knew more than anyone on here what he was all about and warned that he would be way out of his depth...but never ushered a word against him whilst he was at saints...but will always maintain that the position we were in was far far far to big for luggy...heck, even the CCC is too much for him

Its reasons like that which stop the march and protests getting more support IMO.

While I doubt Wottes appointment is what anyone wanted its only a small percentage that think its a completly silly decision. Many understand that we are skint and the cost of binning Wotte and getting someone else in, who would in no way gaurentee our survival, would also seem like a realy silly idea.

If the protest was just about getting rid of Lowe as his being here does more to damage our club than anything else then the march would get much more support.

I think the whole protest and march got highjacked into a hate mob rather than passionate fans wanting change for the better.

I was surprised to read the organisers views on its objectives.

He clearly fancied organising a protest and not really knowing what for.

Then once again you are very misinformed!

The 16 year old fan IS NOT the original organiser of the march.

The organiser of the march is much older, and for work reasons - I don't know what line of work he is in - had to step down from being the face / mouthpiece of the march.

Up steps Connor to effectively take over and keep the protest going. Inevitably he will be interviewed by the press etc, and will make mistakes. Fair play to him for standing up and being counted.

I stand corrected.

I did post on here a few times asking what exactly the protest was trying to achieve.

Didn't pay much attention to it until happened to pick up the old echo with Connor in it.

He clearly stated it was to protest over silly mistakes like appointing Wotte and the aim was for Wilde/Lowe to step aside for Crouch.

The photo of the march shows it being led by an anti Wotte banner.

Connor was the organiser of this march and the echo was its main publicity.

Therefore it seems reasonable to assume that was what the march was for.

Why are people leaping on the Wotte banner? The moment Wotte made those disparaging, ill thought comments about Connor and other fans like him, he became a target for their anger... and quite rightly so.

Maybe, just maybe, the "Wotte notta clue" might refer to his views on fans as opposed to his tactics or football acumen? Or does that not fit in with people's anti demonstration agenda?

Guus Hiddink he is not. Even a monkey will write a shakespeare play eventually.

Urban Myth... will never happen... ;-)

So we won... surprised me no end, because I did not think we had cohesion in us. We dont have the worst players in this division, we have some of the least experienced, who have not jelled into a cohesive unit, mostly due to the constant changes imposed by JP, and it appeared Wotte was continuing in the same vein. Add to that, a lack of fire power upp front and naive defending and its no surprise we are where we are.

Has Wotte found a winning combination, i hope so, but its too early to start judge him at this time... an away win at Cardiff and I might start to believe we can avoid the drop.

BUt a big question: Last seaosn Pearson did miraculously well in taking on a demotivated side that was almost resigned to relegation, turned it around and kept us up. For that he was rightly given the plaudits and i think we all agree he thus deserved his chance to see what he could do with us now. Lowe went a different route, risky but I can just about understand its merits, if not totally the reason why. So if Wotte does keep us up, last game or before, will he be treated equally as fans have reacted to Pearson? Will he deserve a further year next season, or will there be a lingering issue about his appointment - because it was Lowes' or because he is perceived as haviong no experience iof the engllish and especially the CCC game?

Nail on head time FC. Wotte's association with Lowe will do him no favours, just as Burley was tarred with the same brush.

I had little doubt that if Lowe had appointed Pearson, who only managed 3 wins in 13 and was 20 mins away from relegation, Pearson would no have the apparent hero status he has now. Stats don't lie. 1.14 points per game - only .03 more than Branfoot and .09 more then Gray. Yet he is the one that got away? Makes you wonder...

What came first, the chicken or the egg? The protest about Wotte or the comments Wotte made about the protest? The first protest was most definitely about Lowe, not Wotte. The second one Wotte's name most definitely came to the fore for his ill time comments about the young protestors.

Not having a pop Nick but it seems that some people get more heated about some bloody demonstration than the very serious mis-management of this club over the last five years.

I would add though SOG, that Pearson did only have 13 games - noty a long time to assess a squad, and start the moulding process, and you have to admit that the general vibe he created was good. I was always most impressed by the way he came across, intelligent, focussed and passionate, so its easy to see why he has a strong following amongst fans.

Wotte will, i think need to achieve MORE to win over fanas and its VERY early days, but I would like to think that if he did keep us up and we did see improvements next season (mid table stability would be taken right now!) that it would give him a platform to build on and fans would back him.

The only thing I can think of is that maybe a little was lost in translation, or it was a cunning ploy on his behalf to get the passion going - knowing that us saints fans can take that into the ground the right way - or siege mentality thing, but wuith teh twist of it actually being aimed at our own fans? Or am I clutching at straws in my efforts to understand him? Whatever we won! ;-)

my main point about the protest is that last time, Lowe didn't care about protests, didn't care about Wilde buying loads of shares, didn't care about AGM - only went when he absolutely had to.

The comments that the organiser of this protest made saying it was about "the silly appointment of Wotte" was before Wotte's comments about 16 year old etc - think it was answering him.

Most on this board agree that to do well in this league, we need a big lump up front and at centre back. Our lumps on Saturday were Jason Euell and Size and how well they did. The other factor was the fact that, for the first time I can remember for a little while, we were first on the ball. A fact not unnoticed by Preston's Manager.

An accolade for the Referee too, he was not keen to dish out yellow cards all the time and tried to keep the game in flow. I cannot remember moaning at him once throughout the game.

I don't think you are clutching at straws - I think Wotte has a bit of the psychologist in him, and I think he is doing just that - instilling a group identity among the players, 'us against the rest' even if the rest incudes some of the fans. If it works, then fine.

No idea if this has already been asked on this thread or elsewhere, as not had chance to catch up with post-match comments, yet, but how much influence did Preston's reported poor performance have on the result? Obviously I don't want to detract from a good result (honest!) but would we still have beaten an in-form Preston?

Sorry but how is 4th in the league not in form?

The differeance was that we put some of our chances away and KD had another blinder.

Most of the season we have created plenty of chances to win nearly all of our games had we put them away. Hopefully if Saga can carry on for a couple of games the pressure will be taken off some of the others and they may start scoring a few.

Throughout the season the 2 main problems we have had were not being able to defend and not being able to put away our chances. Against Preston our Defending got better (still needs work though) and we found the back of the net.

I was "simply" referring to the post-match comments from the Preston manager who said that his team effectively weren't trying in the first half, i.e. they weren't playing with anywhere near the 'form' that had taken them to 4th place.

There is a difference between a team playing poorly because the opposition makes them poor and a side playing poorly because they are having an off-day.

So, my 'simple' observational query was...did we stifle Preston or did they stifle themselves?

I had the same converstaion with my brother yesterday when he wondered the same.My commented that it has always been the same with Saints. When we beat Man u 6-3 or 3-1 or Liverpool 4-2 it was always put down as they werre bad on the day, when we lose it was because the other team are better not that we have an off day. That's peoples perception , we only win as the opponents have an off day, it's pathetic

Exactly.

We are where we are this season because we have been trash, not because our strikers that often out shoot the opposition are crap but because they have had loads of off days.
