Davis 7 - Little to do but commanding enough when he had to be.

James 7 - Some very good defending when required and got higher up the pitch than usual when attacking.

Saeijs 7 - Competed well against Fatty and won all the headers. Only black mark was getting caught horribly out of position for what ultimately led to the goal.

Perry 7 - kept it simple, played Fatty well when he had to.

Skacel 7 - Again, got forward well and some decent interceptions

Gillett 8 - Didn;t seem to tire in the last 20 as usual. Always int he right place

Lallana 6 - Getting back to decent form. Worked hard today. Was knackered after an hour but kept going well

McGoldrick 7 - Worked his nuts off. Definitely better when not playing with his back to goal.

Surman 7 - Excellent first half, quieter in the 2nd. linked well with Rudi.

Saganowski 8 - Two superb goals. yet again teaching Rupert the meaning of 'false economy'

Euell 8 - Has to play up front from now on. held the ball up intelligently, flicked it on to the right areas, worked hard. Just lacking a bit of goal threat.

===========

Wotton 6 - Did what he had to

Liptak and BWP - Not enough time to earn a mark.

Wotte 9 - Spot on selection and tactics and substitutions. To be honest, I've been impressed by every football related thing he's had to say so far and you can actually listen to his interviews unlike JP's which just made me want to kick the radio in. He just needs to STFU about issues other than 'on the pitch'.

Just back from the game and what a game it was.

First half we were superb playing direct flowing football rather then the rubbish we have seen all season. For that Wotte deserves a huge amount of respect. He changed the formation, personel and style and that took some balls. It is effectively dumping the dutch system and reverting back to english system. The confidence but more importantly the passion from the players was a joy to see. Everyone was giving it their all and the amount of proper chances we had in those 45mins were of so much better quality then we have been seeing.

In that 1st half we were superb and was by far the best i have seen us play this season. It is the first time i can honestly say we have looked like a team and that gave the crowd the boost they so badly needed.

2nd half was very different however as you would expect. Preston changed things a bit but they never looked like a top 6 side, far from it. They were awful. As much as Wotte deserves credit he also deserves a bit of criticism when he made the changes effectively switching to a defensive style. We were then on the back foot a bit and i think most were a little nervous. But they held on to a much deserved win, they really did a good job and each of them deserve praise for their attitudes.

What happens now is what is important. We would be stupid and tempting fate to start saying we will now survive or that the manager is awesome etc. He deserves credit for switching style, that to me means a lot. It is showing and proving that everything we have heard from Lowe,JP etc was complete ******** regarding playing just 1 way, we all knew it was.

We have a game in hand on Norwich and Forest and if we win that game we will be level on points with Forest which is the safety zone. We have to take this chance and it will give everybody a massive lift. If we come out and play **** next weekend then this result will mean nothing.

1 game does not mean we are a changed team, 1 result does not mean we have a good manager, 1 result does not change anything other then giving people the faith they so badly needed. We have 1 win in last 5 games. If we keep that ratio we are relegated. That is why what happens now matters so much, it is how we go on from here that we will find out if we have the nohow to survive. The only negative is everyone but Forest also got points, would of got some mad odds on that happening!

Also thought i would say last year people were saying how great Davies was doing, i was one of them, but Roni Size to me has done equally as well, he is exactly what we needed.

Euell was stand-out MOM for me. Led the less experienced players well, stayed calm (well, relatively) with some quite directed, physical play from Preston. Allowed Saga to shine. Pity Saga didn't get his hat-trick - had he not taken so long to wake up he could have had it. The whole team looked dazed for the first ten minutes - I thought they seemed mentally tired, and feared for the worst, but eventually they knuckled down.

Lloyd James should get a mention - he seems to have got faster since the last time I saw him play, or at least off the mark quicker. Brilliant clearance in the last ten minutes.

LOL at the Preston fan who walked past us moaning about the ref. I was thinking right the way through that he had a good game. Kept things under control, wasn't quick to bring out the yellow card (although he could have done, IMHO, especially for all the tugging at Euell and Saga), kept the game flowing.

Who would have thought that a team loaded with experienced players with a genuine goalscorer up front would be competitive? Not Rupert anyway...

Enough sarcasm. We were very good in the first half and Preston were absolutely dreadful, and they paid the price for it. Their tactics were one-dimensional and easily dealt with by Saejis and Gillett, the latter being my MOTM - probably the best game I've seen him have for Saints. Saga's goals - terrific. But this has to be built on, something we've been left saying on half a dozen occasions previously this season. Bring on the Bluebirds!

Wow! I really enjoyed the game today. Of course I was happy with the win but the way we played and the work rate was most pleasing! Saga worked his socks off and was supported well by JE, who had his best game for some time. We came under a lot of pressure when Chaplow came on but KD was in great form.

Well done Saints!

one other i noticed was Euell calling all the players together after Preston scored' date=' whatever he said worked because we did not crumble[/quote']

I noticed that as well. For all the moans he has got this season, he is certainly due some plaudits tonight.

Almost all of the senior players stepped up to the plate today and there was enough of them to help the younger players in their personal battles.

A much better balance and some class up front made so much difference. We have a chance, particularly with teams such as Norwich, Plymouth and Forest all struggling.

It will be two from us and those three IMHO as I think everyone else is out of it.

Wow, where has that been all season? A few more performances like that and we may just get out of this.

Tough to pick a MOTM but I would go for Euell, worked tirelessly and was constantly fouled with no reward. Also great to see him gather the team up after the goal, finally a bit experience and a cool head when the kids may start to lose it a bit.

Note to Rupert, see what a bit of experience does? Now if we had started the season with this kind of line up....

Great result, now need to press on and get some more points on the doors. Wotte may not save us from the drop but he has certainly shaken things up for the better.

Despite the doomsayers and the losers who are so called protesting, the team is trying the best they can and fingers crossed the results will continue to come as they did today.

2 home wins all season. I'll reserve judgement for a while if it's all right with you... he's still an arrogant arse but for now he can have a night off the abuse... ;)

Think you may have missed the point of my post. I'm saying to come on and criticise Wotte for winning 3-1 would be retarded, so of course people aren't going to be criticising him.

Supporting the team and wanting a change in the boardroom are not mutually exclusive you know:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Davis – Did what was needed. Couple of decent saves and takes.

James – decent game but I would prefer him right midfield

Saeijs – immense and strong in defence.

Perry – quite but effective

Skacel – linked up well with Surman on the left. Looked classy and up for it.

Lallana – needed to get down the right side more to give an outlet for James. Silky skills

McGoldrick – told to play in the hole and was effective in both attack and defence. One of his best games. May have found his best position.

Gillett – Some wayward passes but more than made up for by his work rate and tackling

Surman – Some poor free kicks and corners at the start but a great opening goal and linked up well with Skacel. Just need the same width on the right now.

Euell – His strength and work up front disrupted their defence and was something we have been missing in this league.

Saganowski – class told. 2 excellent goals but more, he worked throughout the game.

Subs

Wotton – bought on to give us a bit more height at the back. Can’t say I remember him doing anything good or bad.

Wright Phillips – When he was running the line warming up the crowd in the Itchen sung his name. You could he his confidence rise and a big smile to himself shows just what positive support can do. He went on with one aim, not to let the supporters down. Lively

Liptak – Won every challenge when he came on. Looks a good loan signing and good cover for Saeijs & Perry.

Referee had a decent game.

Crowd were in good voice

My worry was that we are still too narrow. Wotte was playing Euell and Saganowski p front with a diamond formation. We still need to get down the wings more and cross from the by line. Virtually every cross from James from a midfield wide position was cleared by the Preston defenders.

Good game, deserved result, contented supporters. Now we need the same for Cardiff next week.

Radio Hants Third Half favourite Cider Bob said tonight that Euell is the worst player ever to play for Saints! The mans an idiot! (Cider Bob that is!). Euell was outstanding today. He held the ball, got stuck in and was a real hand-full. I heard the crowd chanting his name quite a few times. Perhaps now we will see him in his best position.

Ah, yes good point. Only criticise after failure... He got it right today, because WE got it right and started with six/seven experienced players.

Lordy this football business is so simple, why are we are in this mess??? ;)

Fair play to him today and for whatever is allowing proper players to play!!

3-1 up going into stoppage time never really feels safe with Saints does it...

Anyway, nevermind that, W00T!!!!!!!!!111 :D:D:D

I like the quote on the OS match page.

At 90+1 minutes: The fans in the Northam start to believe we might actually win this one.

Says so much about good Saints are at closing games out  Still nevertheless a brilliant 3 points today. Maybe....just maybe...we can pull off a real great escape this season.

it would be interesting to know how many of the people who voted for Sagga over Euell were at the game.

Sagga was brilliant today BECAUSE of Euell

My brother used to say that about Beattie and Ormerod but people don't see it. I love strikers who work the back four and pull them apart but I do like people who can bury the ball more!!! ;)

Just because we get a result,at long last, does not mean people that are not in favour of Wotte do not have a valid point.

Ffs,one game thats all, from reports it was good stuff for 45 mins.

I hope he succeeds in turning it around, but i am yet to be convinced that he is imune from critisism.

Equally when we lost it did not mean they HAD a valid point. Any manager has to be judged after a series of games.

this is a "were you there moment"..lol

No. I was outside for the first 20 minutes or so, then decided to go back into town. I could have had a ticket given to me, indeed Mary Corbett had one spare and I was offered one by somebody I'd never met before who seemingly had to leave just as the match started and asked me if I wanted a ticket.

But principles are principles, so I boycotted the match and listened to it on Solent.

Only the second match that we have won at home this season and I missed it. Seldom too that we score any goals at home either, let alone 3! Mind you, it could be that I'm a jinx on us at home, so perhaps I ought to stay away the rest of the season too.

Blimey, I decide to go and get a life on a Saturday by going out for a curry and THIS happens.

Bolox I suppose this means I gotta eat curry EVERY Saturday now.

Well done lads, must be the breakfasts all week in training. Same again next week please

I have to go to a hockey match every time we play now. :D

Great result, maybe we do have the quality to survive in the end.

I can't believe it! I went to Pompey (Southsea) today for my sins with the kids, usually take the son to games but decided not too.

Turned the radio on in the car on the way home expecting the worst and darn well nearly ploughed my car into the one in front in shock when I heard the score. Think I might not go next week as well and see if its been me bringing all this doom to the club. Don't know if I can bring myself to go to Pompey again though but if it works I'll bloody move there!

Well done lads keep up the good work now we've got the home monkey off our back hopefully we can string together a few wins!!!

Completely agree about Saga and Euell, switch the positions around and I don't think it would be as effective.

Did that second half go on for 60 minutes?

Well done Wotte after 16 games at home we have someone who finally realises what the CCC is all about.

Many of us have been crying out for Euell physical prescence up front and today Saga reaped the benefits.

Great tactics in the last 10 mintes as well with Lipstick coming on and winning the aerial duals.

On that showing how on earth are Preston 4th especially with that mobile forward line - so easy to play against as we did it well keep them high up the pitch as Parkin is slower than me with my bad leg!

Well done Jason Euell you get slagged off and written off too often on here but today you were superb my MOM.

One swallow doesn't make a summer but at least an enjoyable Saturday afternoon for a change.

According the sages on this board Rupert picks the team so I really have to congratulate him on his selections today ;-)

Although to be serious I thought swopping Ewell and McGoldrick round was an inspired move and both played really well - to be honest I couldn't fault the effort of any of the players. If Wotte keeps them playing like this I will be happy

Various unassociated thoughts have tumbled through my brain in a disorganised fashion somewhat resembling a motorway pile-up

-Maybe Wotte can save us

-What a pr*ck Lowe was getting rid of Saga and our other established strikers

-Flash-in-the-pan, normal service resumed next week

-Why cant we play like this every week ?

-Hoping we survive this season, but what the f**k needs to be done in the closed season ?

-has the upswelling of discontent focused minds somewhat at SMS ?

Anyway, what the f**k. Great win, great performance from Marek, roll on Cardiff..

Excellent result and in some ways they all deserve 10 out of 10, but I'll give my comments anyway

Davis - 7 - quiet day overall, but did nothing wrong

James - 8.5 - this lad is a good footballer. Barely put a foot wrong all game

Skacel - 8 - looked good going forward

Perry - 7 - steady

Saeijs - 8 - this man has made a huge difference to our team & possibly our season

Surman - 7.5 - not his best but he is still the brains of the outfit

Lallana - 7.5 - looking fit again and troubled them all afternoon

McGoldrick - 8.5 - worked his socks off. Looks like he has finally found his best position. He is never a centre-forward, but in a slightly deeper role he caused them trouble all day

Gillett - 9 - the perfect man to sit in the middle. One of his best games for us

Euell - 8.5 - didn't look like scoring, but his physical presence up front made a real difference

Saganowski - 8.5 - great goals and plenty of hard work

Wotton - 7 - does what it says on the label

BWP - 6.5 - marked down because he needlessly conceded possession twice in the last two minutes

Liptak - 7 - don't know if he is any good but he is tall and he has long legs which was ideal in the last five minutes

Wotte - 9.5 - Got his selection bang on, finally started putting round pegs in round holes (Euell & McG) & you couldn't fault his substitutions either. Also got them working their socks off

I think people have covered most of the good points on here but my thoughts on the game ...

I was worried when I saw euell up front and Mcgoldrick at CM. However what a pleasant suprise, A brave decision by Wotte by god did it work. Euell led the line brilliantly, held the ball up well, and won balls in the air. For me Mcgoldrick has a decent touch, can pass the ball well and looks ok running with the ball at his feet facing. So having him breaking from midfield to pick up the knock downs, lay offs and play the ball out wide when he had a chance worked really well. Then it was useful to have him arriving late in the box withmore of an attacking threat than most of our usual CM's. Maybe just maybe DMG has found a position where he can be most effective.

Great decision by wotte today, also teh subs to snuff out the game when we were on the back foot did the trick. You earned your money today Wotte, keep up the good work.

Good game, good result. I thought the defence handled their brick ****house strikers very well and their goal should have been ruled out for a handball against their LM in the build up to it. Fantastic support from the fans again especially with all thats happened this season. Also good to see the response from the fans when Chaplow came on. Nice to see that fans still remember what he did for us even though it's been 3 seasons now nearly since he came here on loan. Shame he then had to go through the back of Surman a few times almost as soon as he came on ;)

Euell and Skacel both shouting and pointing.

THAT is exactly what we've been missing.

Seriously, the first line up al season that has looked balanced in terms of youth and experience, skill and guts, and both raw and realised talent.

Of course that didn't guarantee a win, but is the sort of team should be fielded to do well - at the very least compete in the CCC.

Great win, but feeling slightly numb by it all, so don't feel quite like I normally do after a saints win. hmmm, I guess it remains to be seen if it's corner turned over a new leaf on the the up or just a the flash of a swallow in the pan and into the fire etc etc...

Skacel, Saga and especially Euell were our best players today and inspired the team to one of it's best performances of the season. Where have they been most of the season? Out of the team thanks to that genius Lowe. We wouldn't be in this position if he hadn't consistently meddled with the football side of OUR club. The proof was out there on the pitch today. God how I despise that man!
