Because we both wore the Queens uniform in a position that meant we had to pass a few exams and show a working brain?

because Jan was first team coach and Wotte youth/reserves

Wotte was initially appointed as Academy Director and to assist Jan. To quote Wotte himself on the day he was appointed (see Archive if you do not believe me):

"My role is to assist Jan and give guidance to the Academy and to produce players for the Championship and ultimately the Premier league."

So actually he had 3 roles, none of which included coaching by the way. (1) Assisting Jan (the first team coach), (2) giving guidance to the Academy and (3) producing players (presumably including finding players from outside, not just within the Academy)

His role was never initially to coach the youth or reserves, no mention of coaching when he was appointed. Because of other issues he ended up taking on that role, but clearly he was originally appointed as part of the golden due to be part of the team running the first team and also guiding the Academy.

sorry but i don't agree, you can try and run defence but these were his actual remarks

"I read some stories about some young kids doing a protest march and you just wonder what’s in their minds – are they really supportive or are they waiting for us to go down? "

To me saying that it is young kids protesting is not taking the people serious at all.

"You can moan every day about Southampton Football Club and probably they are right because we’re not performing well enough – we’re 23rd in the league – but in difficult times you recognise a true fan and the true believers in this club."

So a true fan and a true believer should be all happy and full of nice words/feelings for the club and the way it is being run? The fans have had to put up with a lot of crap from this club and paid for it.

Wotte should be in the dressing room telling his players what to do, out on the training pitch drilling them, not on the whistle to the Echo talking about the fans, again.

Exactly. Sorry NickG you can defend him all you like but you're not reading the intent of the article.

What's more Wotte shouldnt be putting himself into the position - even if it was misconstrued (and I dont think it was) - by commenting on such things.

We'll support him IF he produces results. He isn't, can't and won't produce results.

Man's a Cliffordesque fraud with a dodgy background and is part of the problem at SFC NOT part of a solution.

Why is everyone so hung up on the 4 games in charge?

He [and his influence] has been here ALL season!

Most people on here were predicting that JP would go and be replaced by Wotte, and we would continue our demise for the rest of the season. It's the only thing we've all agreed on this year!!!

I fail to see how it can surprise people that our form is continuing in the same vein as it has.

Totally agree, Wotte has been as integral a part of what has happened this season as JP. So far he has not even delivered what JP did, still a home win tomorrow would at least bring him level with Nice but Dim in terms of home wns I suppose.

Does anybody else get the feeling reading this thread that we really need to get out more?

I've seen murder trials get less debate than this.

The guy wants to win. We want to win. The players want to win. Life sucks sometimes.... ...we don't always get what we want.

As others have said, although Wotte has been at the club he has taken a back seat with regard to the 1st team as that job was taken by JP.

he has taken over and acknowledged JP's mistakes and made changes accordingly. I guess should BD have come in 4 games ago he would have done the same thing?

Just because Wotte was here already or came in at the same time as JP I dont see why he should be jdged like he has been in charge the whole season.

Like you say though I think everyone expected him to be the one in charge with JP getting the assistant role or reserves or what ever. So now he is shouldnt he be getting the same support/slack as anyone else would have got?

Christ if the decission was taken to get Dodd back in some role I would give him a clean slate to work from. I dont see why Wotte shouldnt also get that luxury.

The headlines, internet article and threads on here do not include the full interview so thought it would help those who don't get echo to summarise. (March only briefly mentioned in couple of lines of 150 line article) - never says they are not true fans

Wotte says;

he read about some young kids (patronising but maybe cultural things like Jan and boys??) are organising protest march, you wonder if their minds are really supportive

you can moan - would be right -we are under performing

23rd in league, difficult times

asks for support, true believers, doesn't want negativity (or politics)

positive support can help player give extra 1 or 2%

talks about good support at Reading players really noticed and had impact.

team working hard improving details, know whats at stake and are committed

working hard in gym, training ground, preparing well and determined, experienced players leading by example

asks for support tomorrow

Never fear, NickG is here, dashing valliantly to fight the good fight for justice for hopeless plc chairmen, football chairmen and football managers everywhere...

Anyone involved with the playing staff at SMS is there to "Assist" the manager. I read that little snippit as Wotte will assist Jan by preparing the kids and reserves to a level that Jan could use in the 1st team.

NO!!!

We are 6 points from safety with a rapidly dwindling fixture list!!

We DO NOT have the time to continue with this failed experiment.

Not so sure about "back seat". Front passenger seat would be a more accurate analogy IMHO.

I never had the inclination to fly them is more accurate. I actually hate flying. I do enjoy engineering though. Bugger me, I became an engineer. Oddly, had I bcome an engineer on trains I would not actually then have a train licence either. Do you get the idea yet?

Also quite interesting that you seem to only manage your brother as someone with a brain, and not yourself. Interesting, yet not unexpected.

If he was so influencial how come JP stuck with the kids kids and let the Pros watch from th sidlines?

Why did the formation not change?

VectiSaint posted some info about how Wotte is here to Assist JP and so on. I answered that the same way as this in that there are many people at the club "Assisting" the manager. Doesnt make them all Assistant Managers though does it?

Weston - you may also like to recall that Wotte was the man who put the sweety mice in Rupert's head 2 years ago that we could do this Total Football crap with kids and was nearly appointed instead of GB then... we couldve been in League 1 last year instead.

Dont get me wrong as if I were in charge and we had money he wouldnt have been my choice but I am looking at this with the opinion that we dont have many choices right now.

If he was offering advice to JP it seems JP wasnt listening as McLaggon didnt get a go. We didnt change formation. The old Pros didnt get a look in and we didnt get better or worse.

Wotte has taken charge and of the 4 games we have played better in 3 and got 2 draws when we possibly should have had 2 wins. Formation has changed and experienced Players are back in the mix.

I just think he deserves a chance. Besides we cant afford to change things anyway.

Maybe your right. I actually believe the right thing to do is somewhere in between the "English" way and the Crazy "Dutch" experiment. Will wait to find out i Wotte can find the right mix but after 4 games I dont think its right to be calling for his head or comparing what someone else might have done in a whole season.

Why did the formation not change?

Because Wotte changed his original tune since taking over from Poortvliet, thus making it appear that he had less influence on overall team affairs than was touted at the outset?

As the OS & Michael Wilde said when 'the management team' were appointed:

http://www.saintsfc.co.uk/search/?mode=movenav&page_id=10167

"The Dutch duo will head up a revolutionary coaching programme.

The move heralds a complete change of culture at the club with Saints adopting a more continental approach.

The aim is to provide a seamless link between the successful Orchard Homes Academy and the first-team with scholars training alongside the senior players.

The 52-year-old Poortvliet, who has a proven track record of doing extremely well with no money, will be head coach while 47-year-old Wotte - a former Director of Football at Feyenoord - will focus more on the Academy. But the intention is that the four coaches will mix and match in a seamless structure."

To suggest that Wotte had little input on overall team affairs whilst Poortvliet was at the helm would appear to imply that the club's original thinking wasn't as published by the OS and elsewhere at the time.

Indeed, after he left, Poortvliet himself appeared to suggest that Wotte had much more influence in the club's affairs:

http://www.setanta.com/uk/Articles/Football/2009/1/28/Championship-Poortvliet-on-Wotte/gnid-37457/

Jan Poortvliet has hit out at his replacement at Southampton, Mark Wotte, after seeing his assistant step into his shoes at St Mary's.

Poortvliet paid the price for a dismal record of one home win in 14 games with the sack last week and Wotte replaced him with "mixed feelings".

In an interview with De Telegraaf, Poortvliet claimed: "It is far from chic what he does.

"When everything is settled, Wotte must do what he wants.

"I am sick of this man."

Exactly. Anyone on this site who claims that Wotte has had no influence on the 1st team throughout JP's tenure is deluded. Am I really supposed to believe that two Dutch coaches were brought in at the same time yet had no contact during the season and did not work alongside one another, its ridiculous. To claim Wotte deserves to start with a "clean state" is absurd, the man has been involved all season and is as culpable for our current position as anyone who was been involved in Rupert Lowe's failed Dutch experiment.

Frankly I’ve been extremely disappointed with how Wotte and others have left JP to solely carry the can for our current league position. The whole setup has failed, to make out that the club is being run soundly but it was all down to JP’s poor management that has led to the poor form is laughable.

Your wasting your time. Some people will believe something regardless of what actually happens/happened. The truth is we have a group of people trying so hard to find something to be smug about but the reality is there is nothing to be smug about. The same characters are the same people who said Lowe coming back would make a change for the better, the same people who said we would be playoffs contenders or mid-table when JP and Wotte came in. The same people who said the kids will do us proud and show how much they care with their displays on the pitch, the same people who said we would not be in a relegation fight etc etc. Give it a week or two and they will claim to have known Wotte would be a disaster waiting to happen all along. That is how it is. If we get stuffed tomorrow they will revert back to having a go at Wotte. If we win they will claim he is the best thing to happen to the club. But for some people words mean more then actions, for me i couldn't give a monkies what Wotte says as i will be at the games regardless, all i care about is the results, lose tomorrow and that is 2 points from 15 and thus not good enough and should get his own house in order before telling others what to do.

If that's the case, why have you made so many posts on the 3 threads currently running on this subject, including this one:

No he just needs to shut up, every day he is spouting something i.e Wotte goes to war etc, time to put up or shut up. If he wins some games and helps us in our battle then his words will mean something. Right now they make him look an idiot.

You seem awfully animated for someone who "couldn't give a monkies" about what the man says.

When he is doing badly, creating a poor record AND STILL insulting the fans, patronising the protesters and suggesting that those who went on the march are not true fans, then people have a right to be irritated.

And I have to say the way he hung Poortvliet out to dry is one of the reasons I haven't warmed to him (along with not delivering, but being quick to shoot from the lips as well). It appears he would sell his granny down the line!!!!

And judging by Poortvliet's comments after his dismissal, it would appear that he feels the same.

It's obvious that the line from the Club is that Wotte is his own man, a fresh start and he shouldn't be blamed for what happened in the past, but this attitude and the way Wotte was quick to rubbish Poortvliet's tactics etc, when he himself was in it up to his neck is rather shoddy.

As has been pointed out, the Revolutionary Coaching Set Up was interchangeable, seamless, all helping each other and no fixed boundaries. Wotte and Poortvliet appeared as a double act down the pub, at the AGM, after match press conferences and debriefs and he was involved in transfers in and out (e.g. he recommended offering Dyer a new contract).

So to try and distance himself from his involvement with the Revolutionary Coaching Set Up is somewhat tacky and gives me concerns about his integrity.

Because it is always the same thing isn't it. Were all just going round in circles. We are so caught up with over analysing every little thing that we ignore what it is all about and that is the football but more importantly the football results. Wotte has only just got the job as manager here. However he was here from the start being a key member of the dutch revolution. But in his short time in charge every day you wake up to find something he has said to the media and it isn't all just positive spin. In a few cases he has gone beyond the need and said things which lets be honest will provoke a reaction from an already angry fanbase. We had the one where he came out backing the board, then the one about fans taking some responsibility for our position etc. As i have said in those 3 threads my view is he should just shut up about everything other then the team and the matches. We don't need to know what he thinks about people protesting, we don't need to know that he likes Lowe, we don't need to know half the stuff he says. What we need to know is, is he the guy to save this club from going to our lowest point in 50 years? Is he the guy who will give the job 110% and knuckle down and get the players playing above themselves?

Everytime he comes out with a remark like today it will just ignite more hatred for the guy. You can argue until you are blue in the face and becoming worm food about what would of happened under different managers/boards/players etc all that means nothing. We are in a very very serious situation where we need the fans players and the staff all pulling in the same direction, coming out with remarks like this does not do that. It makes people interpret them differently. Some will see it as no harm while some who go to the games and have done so for years will question what being a real fan means. Just get on with it, let the results do the talking, that is all i want, i'm sure most people just want that too.

I did it as there were 3 threads at that time running on comments on the internet report, or quotes - I think it was Saintrobbie had attirbuted to him.

I didn't feel the echo article when I read it was reflected in any of those threads.

I did feel that one line sounded patronising, but the retorical question was not saying those who go on march are not real fans.

He actually paid a compliment to the difference fans make whilst conceding moans are justified ( a first!).

For what its worth, I certainly haven't warmed to him and remain unconvinced about him.

But this pathetic witch hunt due to who appointed him and damning him for speaking, not speaking etc and taking his words to bits etc is, in my opinion hysterical and childish.

Nick, if you were to look at that article in isolation then maybe that is correct.

But, recently on the ITV Championship programme (Swansea), when asked about the protestors...

'I don't understand what they are moaning about - Rupert wasn't here last year and they weren't in a better position then'

Wotte just can't stay away from having little digs at the fans - looks like he's been having 'Lunatic Fringe History Lessons' from someone.

It's not the first time, and wait for tomorrow..there will be more.
