knellster Posted 18 February, 2009 Share Posted 18 February, 2009 I can remember reading a newspaper report of a game against Blackburn in which the reporter referred to "a mindless group of supporters who couldn't forgive a player [John Bailey] for something that happened years ago". I always wondered what he would have thought about the abuse he still got when he moved on to Everton. I also seem to recall that he was frequently injured whenever Everton came to The Dell. It was great fun though. Other than him it would probably be Bagpuss and Peter Crouch. We took a gamble on Crouch and turned him into an England player. He then behaved like a complete ***t in a vital game at Palace and ****ed off as soon as we got relegated. As far as players in general go, I would have to say Ronaldo and Gerrard for having great talent but still seeing the need to cheat at every opportunity. saint1977 Posted 18 February, 2009 Share Posted 18 February, 2009 Ive got some friends in Stoke who went to school with Lee Chapman and hated him so much that even if he scored for Stoke it didnt count! 1-0 wins were written off as 0-0 to anyone who asked. He went on to score regularly against us for Leeds, Ipswich and I think his only 2 Arsenal goals were in a xmas 2-2 draw at The Dell. And he beat up the lovely Lesley Ash (allegedley). He also scored for West Ham in what was C@ckrill's last game for us at the Dell in 93/94. Lee Chapman did seem to be unpopular at a number of clubs for some reason. I'd add to my earlier list these names: - Phillips - unneccessary comments on departing and not popular with his team-mates wherever he's been. - Berkovic - great player but not Mr Popular either. I can't think of Berkovic without Hartson's boot thumping into his jaw! - Diego Maradona - flawed genius but cheating little cokehead as well - Eranio and Baiano - diving sh!ts earning penalties in seperate games at our bogey stadium, Pride *****s - Kevin Bond - the semi-final backpass in 86 and a waste of money as a coach. Did relegate Bournemouth to his credit though. - David Lee - one of THE worst SFC players ever and slagged off the club and the fans because he was so sh!t he couldn't even dislodge the other rubbish Branfoot signed. - Branfoot - nice bloke but awful football. Askham takes a lot of the blame though. - David Speedie - can anyone remember Boro home when 2 of our fans had a pop at him? Missed from 2 yards out at Liverpool. To think Branfoot said Speedie and Dixon would outscore Shearer! - Stuart Ripley - said he didn't care if we went down. To be fair, he said sorry and did work harder after that but a poor player with some decent games in early 99/00. Summed up his spell with us in his last game V Ipswich, WGS's first where he was superb for an hour, badly tore a hamstring and retired - Bryan Robson - got Case sent off when it was a yellow and his Boro team were flashing imaginary yellow cards at the ref at the Dell trying to get our lads booked. Wonder where they learned that? - Roy Keane - for that gesture on the final day 04/
Ivan Katalinic's 'tache Posted 18 February, 2009 Share Posted 18 February, 2009 Playing wise: Adrian Heath, Kevin Sheedy, Guy Whittingham, Paul Walsh, Rodney Marsh, Nigel Clough, Sol Campbell, Robert Pires, Alan Knight and Alan Biley plus ex-Saints Olivier Bernard, Calum Davenport, Peter Crouch and Jelle van Damme. ladysaint Posted 18 February, 2009 Share Posted 18 February, 2009 Leeds United, that fateful day in the early 1970's at Elland Road when all their players took the p**s out of our players.Back heels, flicks keepy ups, they took turns in humiliating the players. I remember Brian O'Neil diving into tackles trying to kick Billy Bremner and Johnny Giles. The BBC still play it now, makes my blood boil. By the way we lost 7-0 that day if i remember rightly. Remember it well there wasnt many of us left at half time, most of those I went with left to go to the pub as I think we were 4-0 down by then but I stayed to the bitter end. Its one of those along with the John Bailey incident and winning the 76 cup final that I will never forget.
Gingeletiss Posted 18 February, 2009 Share Posted 18 February, 2009 If you can remember back to the cup semi final at Higbury in 84, it was not just the fact that Heath scored the late winner that has made him a figure generally despised by saints fans. It has a lot to do with the manner of his celebrations in front of us and the following scenes on the pitch. The way in which the scousers thinking their pitch invasion was intimidating, but they soon went scurrying back to the Norh Bank when masses of Saints fans took to the pitch and totally outnumbered them. As a result of this game Highbury lost the chance to host semi-final because of their refusal to erect fencing. No I am not condoning the violence and the scenes from 84 but yes I was there and yes I was part of it and yes i was on the pitch.... Do i hate Adrian Heath ? hate is a strong word but i despise him for shattering a dream.... Lol...............I was there, this needs a new thread all of it's own. Rut Posted 18 February, 2009 Share Posted 18 February, 2009 Sammy Lee. Still the only Saints player I could not support. Was a thread about this sort of thing before and someone added that when he played for Saints (for Saints this is!) at Anfield he did a lap of honour for the Lpool fans and pretty much ignored the Saints traveling support. I'm a 100% 'anyone but Liverpool' for the league title. Even more so when I see that smarmy little git on the bench there.

Trumush Posted 18 February, 2009 Share Posted 18 February, 2009 Just to add to the John Bailey reminice, whenever he came to The Dell, there were fans stood under the West Stand by the players entrance that used to wave newspaper cuttings of the episode with the sendings off at him when he came onto the pitch as well as the "we hate Bailey" chant. That is how much he was hated. If you dont hate "Inchy" Heath you were'nt at the Highbury semi-final.I too was on the pitch until I flew back into the Clock end still attached to a metropolitan policeman.Took a physical and emotional battering that day. ericofarabia Posted 18 February, 2009 Share Posted 18 February, 2009 Redkrap and his side kicks who took us down. I know the seed had already been sown, but Redkrap, as he is now doing at Spunks didn't instill any self belief in the players and publically stated that he needed another 7 players and even then it was a virtually impossible task to stay up. He slagged off our promising youth players when they lost at Mansfield ? in LC ... he chose the team, tactics and substitutions but didn't accept any of the blame . Fielded a crap line up and left every one totally demoralised when we played Moan U in the Fa Cup and then his decision not to play SKP in the most important game ever to keep us in The Prem on the last day of the season was beyond a joke. I know a lot of people give SKP a hard time for what he said afterwards but he was one of the few players who looked like he gave a damn on the pitch in the last few weeks of that season. John Bailey, already well documented, but as an extra reason, Ossie never played at The Dell again after being sent off at Ewood Park, so we were never given the opportunity to say farewell to him But what a day the 5-0 drubbing and absolute verbal mauling of JB was. Even Roops hasn't been the victim (yet) of such an onslaught from all quarters of the ground!! Many others already mentioned, but one of my other pet hates is Phil Pinocchio Thompson. Probably the most ungracious loser ever (after Alex ferguson of course!!) 2 of my most treasured TV moments are the absolute **** take wind ups Mick Channon and Mike Osman gave him on Sky during the 4-2 Valentines Day massacre of his beloved Liverpool (he wouldn't even acknowledge just how good Matts 1st minute screamer was ) and more recently Matty on Sky going ballistic when Howard scored for Barnsley in the last minute to secure an Fa Cup upset and ripping the **** out of his fellow big nosed pundit Too many refs to mention, but his name escapes me, but the one who looks like Errol Brown out of Hot Chocolate ... his condescending grin at players after giving dodgy decisions really wound me up, it's a wonder nobody ever chinned him. Apart from the result, at the pitch invasion I hauled my 12 year old son from his position on the wall. Unfortunately, I'd forgotten that he had taken off his bran new leather jacket and put it on the wall. My the time I got back of course it had gone! Has anyone seen it?
