Names That Saints Fans Hate

Gemmel

Recommended Posts

Not including the board, shareholders, or previous chairmen, directors etc, (There's enough threads on them) but i read a name on here today that put me in a bad mood as soon as i saw it and was thinking of players, ex managers, that Saints fans have hated or grown to hate over the years. Any advance on these five? (Not in any particular order)

1) Adrian Heath (Little *****)

2) Alan Bailey (Biley? Everton)

3) Ian Branfoot

4) Paul Davis

5) Ricardo Fuller ( More recently)

Darren Anderton, got some proper stick when he went to Spurs, but never did anything against Saints

Isn't Darren Anderton a saints fan?

Yes he is and when he went to Spurs he got it big time.......... he used to take their corners and everybody would bundle down to the corner sections singing "Scummer" "Scummer" . His first game against us at White hart they asked him on match of the day about the abuse and he said he was gutted because he was a Saints fan. I'm still not 100% sure when we stopped calling poompey scummers and changed to skates

Brian Talbot. talentless t*at that kept being picked for England over Stevie Williams

My brother was mates with his cousin who was a good bloke!

Dennis Wise - now there's someone to focus one's displeasure with the World in general! How I laughed when he was given a job at Newcastle. Didn't you just know it would end in tears.

Us Eastleigh boys were calling them Skates back in about 74. More often it was Skatebaaaaaastads!

I have to say that I quite liked him and the same can be said about John Wile.

My appreciation of Talbot stems from that 1978 Semi Final when he scored the goal (at Highbury I think) against West Brom and in doing so collided with Wile and both of them ended up with really bad cuts.

I'm sure Talbot was totally out of it, but ended up a hero even though he was stretchered off, whilst Wile just put a bandage on his head and played on!!!!!!

We all liked Ipswich in those days, as they stuck 2 fingers up to the big 5 and showed us the way. However, Talbot did the unforgiveable and sign for the evil Arsenal empire the year after that cup win you refer to. Mind you Williams did exactly the same 6 years later and I still havent really forgiven him.

You're quite right about Ipswich and they did have a manager who was uiniversally liked in Bobby Robson. As a team they played it the right way and had a pretty decent team.

I used to love Paul Cooper who I'm sure had a great record of penalty saves. And watching Saints up in Sunderland a few years back managed to get out on the lash with Eric Gates in Newcastle after the match and he was a great laugh (even with no teeth).

I've probably combined about 3 different teams but I can remember a team of Cooper, Burley, Butcher, Osman, Mills, Wark, Beattie, Muhren, Thyssen, Gates, Mariner. Quite a side, and very similar to us in many ways around that time.

Not forgetting Alan Brazil. I stood on the 1/2 way line at Portman when he scored 4 against us in 82 and we were top of the league. He had 3 at h-t and an Ipswich fan who had realised I wasn't cheering asked if our sub was any good. "Chicken George" I told him "couldn't be trusted to sit the right way on a lavatory seat" He promptly comes on and straight from the kick off beats 2 and crosses for Keegan to make it 3-1. Next touch beats full back and slices ball over the stand behind the goal.

The ball went into a locked industrial car park and Brazil never got the right hat trick ball. We lost 5-2.

LOL.

Thanks for putting a smile on my miserable face tonight.

PS I did miss out Alan Brazil and I also reckon I've got an Ipswich team across a couple of eras there as well.

Darren Powell.

I know we aren't picking people for lack of ability, but Christ on a bike he was bad. I mean really really bad. Disney couldn't make up a wicked witch as bad as bad as Darren Powell.

Oh, and Marcus Bent, Darren Huckerby, Ade Akinbeye and Robet Pires because they always scored against us.

And John Westwood.

And Darren... oh wait I've said him.

And Kenwyne Jones.

I'm also surprised skate boomerang Peter Crouch doesn't get more stick. Bottled it at Fratton park, then sent off at Palace for taking a petulant swing at at Ventola (I think).

And Dean Keily. Laugh a minute when he comes to SMS.

Has anyone mentioned Darren Andert..............oh yeah, several of you.

No 1 on my list. What a Saints fan eh? Could have chosen any other club if he wasn't getting a game here but he swapped for the Poxpey shirt? I await the usual abuse when I mention his name as a traitor of the worst kind.

(The mighty Channon and Davies only did it for pocket money when they knew they weren't up to top class football any more.)

2) Ron Harris for whacking Davies in the knee at least 50 yards from where the ball was and then spending his post professional career living on his tales of what a talentless thick thug he was when he played it.

3) Alan McGouglin for being pictured in the sunday papers wearing a Poxpey shirt whilst still at Saints. (To be fair we wouldn't play him cos if he got one more appearance we owed a lot more money on the rest of his transfer fee!)

4) Ronaldo for the Beckham wink, the diving, moaning, riverdancing etc etc - AND being good at the same time.

5) 'Arry. No comment needed.

Ps Westwood isn't worth much of a mention as I think Skates find him nearly as embarassing, if not as annoying, as we do.

Embarassed mention - I think Steve Claridge is alright. Sorry.

Change of mind mention - Ian Wright. Used to **** me off as he always scored a load against us but he was hilarious at MLT''s testimonial and I forgave everything (apart from his useless punditry).

George Courtney for sending Jimmy Case off for a professional foul at Old Trafford despite Jimmy being in his own half.

Gerald Ashby for his inept performance in a FA Cup replay at Carrow Road & sending off MLT & Barry Horne.

Roger Milford for finding those extra minutes to allow Oldham an equaliser.

i like Roy Keane.

Glenn Hoddle?

Harry Redknapp

David McGoldrick

Marcus Bent

Kevin Phillips

If you hate Glenn Hoddle on a personal level fine, but I hope that if you protested at his coming back to Saints in 2004 you are reconciled with the fact that this was the first domino of our slide into oblivion.

Think you`ll find it was WGS leaving that started the rot!!

Another one we ued to abuse from under the west was Alan Groves, Oldham circa 76. Not only did he look like a refugee from the Hair-Bear Bunch, but he got caught by the NOTW for shacking up with his 16 year old paper girl!! Loads of stick from us (Hi Polly) but sadly died in 78 of a heart attack aged 30. Moral: leave the fit young ones alone.

He got sent off for Bournemouth reserves (I think) at salisbury for punching a fan that was giving him stick

I can't really understand the hatred towards Adrian Heath. He scored a late winner - big deal. It was also quarter of a century ago. I had this discussion with someone on here ages ago who tried to imply that I wasn't a "real" fan if I didn't understand the hatred towards him. My own opinion on that is that at 18 years old way back then, though very disapointed by the news of a late winner to Everton, it never went on to rot inside me. I would also have expected those of a similar age to have mellowed over time at the totally legitimate though late goal scored by Mr Heath. Perhaps they are unable to do so as remembering a situation that far back takes them back to being the arrogant young men a lot of us have been at times.

Eammon O'Keefe 81 Cup replay at Goodison to add to the usual Everton culprits.

The Bailey stick was brilliant, as stated even the Birds in the West Centre with their tartan blankets and flasks we singing at him.

Think they would be delighted to have been considered "birds" although expect many have now slipped past the tartan blanket and flasks stage of life.

Must be 2 John Bailey's the one I was thinking of was playing for Blackburn not Everton around 1977 ish got Osgood and Willaims sent off at Ewood Park and got the stick when he came back to the Dell later in the season.

Same bloke,as many posts on this thread prove.

If you can remember back to the cup semi final at Higbury in 84, it was not just the fact that Heath scored the late winner that has made him a figure generally despised by saints fans.

It has a lot to do with the manner of his celebrations in front of us and the following scenes on the pitch.

The way in which the scousers thinking their pitch invasion was intimidating, but they soon went scurrying back to the Norh Bank when masses of Saints fans took to the pitch and totally outnumbered them.

As a result of this game Highbury lost the chance to host semi-final because of their refusal to erect fencing.

No I am not condoning the violence and the scenes from 84 but yes I was there and yes I was part of it and yes i was on the pitch....

Do i hate Adrian Heath ? hate is a strong word but i despise him for shattering a dream....

Sour grapes on your part, I think. Whether he had celebrated it or not and whether the tough little boys from each side had ran on to the pitch is immateriral. We lost, live with it. Don't try and tell me you feel for Arsenal not being able to host semi-finals. It also comes across as pretty sad that 25 years on you feel it worth mentioning that our fans made their fans run away.

For me:

Number 1 by a distance: Guy Askham - robbed from a vulnerable man (George Bowyer) and has done nowt but line his pockets and I blame him for today's mess as well. Appointed Branfoot, left a big overdraft and his treatment of Merrington summed him up as a sh!tty little man.

- Adrian Heath - sorry Johnny FP but that goal made me sick as a young lad

- Darren Anderton - how can anyone claim they are a Saints fan and start their career there? Bob Higgins was behind that, a disgruntled ex-SFC employee. Can remember being at WHL with about 3-4000 Saints fans and the stick was immense. Anderton had a poor game as well.

- Keith Wiseman, Richards, Hunt - same as Askham. Wiseman even approved Euell's signing. What an idiot.

I'd agree with Roger Milford and Gerald Ashby. I remember Dave Jones launching an astonishing rant against Ashby.

- Steve Dunn - cheating little obese referee who disallowed Shipp's goal at OT in 1996 and also had a stinker V Villa in 2001. The fattest official ever.

- Paul Davis - Thug who broke ****erill's jaw and also a Skate

- Harry - Everything I don't like about football

- Venables - See above

- Abramovic - Destroyed English football

- Scudamore (PL Chief Exec) - 39th game - need I say any more?

- Mike Wilde - Judas and a snake. Almost toppled Askham at number 1.

- Jim Hone - really didn't give a toss

- Alan Smith - vastly overrated although he usually got sent off at SMS so worth a goal start to us if he played. Actually, he was even sent off at SMS playing for England.

- Bill Archer/Bellotti/Robert Chase/Michael Knighton - for crimes against other clubs that surpass even Guy Askham's.

I don't like Lowe but won't add him to this list as he did some good things for us 1997-03 which is more than can be said for most of our Directors since the late 80s. Having said that, he's still been a disaster area since 2004.

Well I get that. It was gutting, and so late in the game too but I don't have any venomous feelings towards a football player doing his job at all.

Leeds United, that fateful day in the early 1970's at Elland Road when all their players took the p**s out of our players.Back heels, flicks keepy ups, they took turns in humiliating the players. I remember Brian O'Neil diving into tackles trying to kick Billy Bremner and Johnny Giles. The BBC still play it now, makes my blood boil. By the way we lost 7-0 that day if i remember rightly.

I do not really care that Arsenal lost the right to host semi finals, as I do not really care as to what you think of my mention the scenes on the pitch.....

I was giving you my take on potential reasons and my own reason why Heath has remained a despised man by myself & possibly other saints fans for 25 years, as you had said you could not understand it....

If you feel that hatred or despising players shouldnt occur or should dwindle over a course of time thats your choice.

Why join in a thread that is basically about past demenours from players against SFC or our players...

Ive got some friends in Stoke who went to school with Lee Chapman and hated him so much that even if he scored for Stoke it didnt count! 1-0 wins were written off as 0-0 to anyone who asked. He went on to score regularly against us for Leeds, Ipswich and I think his only 2 Arsenal goals were in a xmas 2-2 draw at The Dell.

And he beat up the lovely Lesley Ash (allegedley).

I actually think that if you have hatred towards someone for essentially scoring a goal, and I mean real hatred, then you are a sad little man and not to be left in charge of children, but as you say, that's my choice.
