Fowllyd Posted 19 August, 2008 Share Posted 19 August, 2008 So which year was it? I'm sure we missed out during that time, can't be Alzheimers yet:-) Maybe just too many Bullfrogs? I can't honestly recall if we did qualify for Europe post-Heysel, but I'm sure there'll be plenty on here who will. I do remember that the biggest losers among English clubs were Everton, as they'd won the League and the Cup-Winners Cup in 1985, so would have been in the European Cup the following season had it not been for the actions of their fellow Scousers! Fan The Flames Posted 20 August, 2008 Share Posted 20 August, 2008 I love the way some 'fans' forget an FA cup final, a top ten finish inn the Premiership and a shiny new stadium all came under Lowe's reign. And the little matter that before he came we had been hanging on to our Premiership status by the skin of Matt LeTissier's teeth for years. The relegation came under Lowe but had been coming for years before he came on teh scene, the financial nightmare we're in now came from those who followed him. There was life before the Premiership, you might like to know that there we actually won the the FA Cup in 1976 and finished 2nd in 1984 all before Lowe arrived. Lowe didn't come and turn this club around he came and carried on running it as badly as before. Average top flight position before Lowe 12th, average afterwards 13th. Get over it people he's no superstar chairman hes done and is doing a very average job.
Fan The Flames Posted 20 August, 2008 Share Posted 20 August, 2008 How did we get here... By not getting out of the Southern League quickly enough. Who was the chairman then, its all his fault.
CHAPEL END CHARLIE Posted 20 August, 2008 Share Posted 20 August, 2008 You want to know the real reason why we're in our current perilous financial state ? The truth is we got an expensive new stadium and a very expensive relegation at more or less the same time . Had there been a 10 year gap between either event we could have coped , but there wasn't and we can't . You want to know another unpalatable truth ? - it's more a case of rotten luck than somebody being to blame .
Saint Without a Halo Posted 20 August, 2008 Share Posted 20 August, 2008 Why does it matter how we got into this hole? what really matters is how do we get out!
sadoldgit Posted 20 August, 2008 Share Posted 20 August, 2008 Perhaps things would have been better in we had kept Clive Woodward on board and used his skills. For all of the talk on here that he could not transfer his skills to another sport our athletics team have not been doing too bad in a little competition called the Olympics have they? Saintandy666 Posted 20 August, 2008 Share Posted 20 August, 2008 Ermmmmmmm, if you remember, Lowe did very well at the start. Amnesia by some here, remember staying in the premiership, FA cup, europe? Or is that all just a blur...

Spudsaint Posted 20 August, 2008 Share Posted 20 August, 2008 Reverse take over, plc status & entrance of Rupert Lowe. Sorry, but for me that's it in a nutshell. And we won't be able to move forward again until he's gone.

I don't suppose you get to read English newspapers over there Alpine, but here there have been lots of articles about how his influence with the British team has created a more "winning" attitude. Not that we have ever needed that at St Marys of course because what could an "egg chaser" ever teach us??? We won the Rugby World Cup under Woodward, we are having our most successful Games in eons under Woodward, are you really telling me that, if he had been given full reign, he would not have had a positive result at our club too? Hmmm.......

As you've probably both used your three posts for the day now , the thinking behind Pongo's comment is that John Major's government brought in the national lottery, funding from which has been instrumental in a good deal of our sporting successes... Yeah..lottery for good causes and to supplement the charity organizations. Mr X Posted 20 August, 2008 Share Posted 20 August, 2008 Do we have to go through all this again? We've had too many managers, it's as simple as that. and who is accountable for that?
Secret Site Agent Posted 20 August, 2008 Share Posted 20 August, 2008 In the years before Lowe arrived I assummed every season we would be relegated but after his arrival I did not. However our present problems have been caused completely by Wilde Hone and Crouch together with the masses who wanted Lowe out. I doubt if Lowe had been not been chucked out whether we would be in this position today. Lowe might not be well liked or in some cases hated but who could do a better job? It would of course be better if Lowe was not here because he divides the fan base . ****** and piffle. Don't try and re write history. They, (Wilde Hone and Crouch) weren't in charge when we got relegated, they didn't sell the family silver they were just misguided and actually thought they could make a difference, and tried and failed. If this is what you choose to believe, then I choose to believe that Lowe and his cabal put the stops to the many take over bids we recieved, and if he wasn't hoisted we definatly would have been relegated last season. OWTSGMI Posted 20 August, 2008 Share Posted 20 August, 2008 Once Sturrock had been appointed, he should have been given a Season Don't believe we would have been relegated had that been the case
