Miltonaggro Posted 16 February, 2009 Share Posted 16 February, 2009 Bally (dynamo, enough said); Case (the inspiration and mentor of so may good youngsters in Nicholl's side); Williams (grew massively in stature and got capped when made captain). That's some midfield...

derry Posted 16 February, 2009 Share Posted 16 February, 2009 Probably the best ever captain would be Alf Ramsey, first class footballer, England and Spurs regular, as a manager won the 2nd and 1st division championships in successive years, won the world cup as England manager in 1966, nobody else comes close as a leader. Dalek2003 Posted 16 February, 2009 Share Posted 16 February, 2009 Alan Ball was a fantastic captain. His passion and enthuisiasm was infectious. Ken Monkou was a good captain in some of our most difficult seasons.
MrMojoRisin Posted 16 February, 2009 Share Posted 16 February, 2009 Jimmy Case. 2nd. If any bar steward put a hefty challenge in on the young Shearer, Le Tiss or Rod Wallace then JC would let them have it. He was the original Guvnor in my eyes!!!!!!!! St Landrew Posted 16 February, 2009 Share Posted 16 February, 2009 Was going to say Paine for the A-Team and Case [complete shoe-in] for the B-Team. Well, I'll stick with Case for the B-team, but seeing as Terry Paine's England career came to a halt because of a certain player called Alan Ball, then I suppose I'll follow Alf Ramsey's choice. A-Team: Alan Ball B-Team: Jimmy Case

Summers Posted 18 February, 2009 Share Posted 18 February, 2009 Some good options have been mooted in this thread, However, i'd have chosen Jason Dodd before clicking on the thread, and yes, Chris Marsden would be my second choice. Doddsy and MLT always seemed to be sharing the captaqincy so thats why i've gone with Doddsy, mainly becasue of the millions of relegation battles he was involved within, and you need a captain at the back, IMO However, from the current side, i'd give the captaincy to Kelvin first, obviously because he deserves it, but also make Drew Surman vice captain because he cares about the club, being a local lad. Under Weststand Posted 19 February, 2009 Share Posted 19 February, 2009 Alan Ball what an inspiration he was, true leader on the pitch & the manager's right hand. Would take him now as he never let anyone slack on the pitch can you imagine him b@ll@cking some of this shower now.

Victor Posted 20 February, 2009 Share Posted 20 February, 2009 Roy Keane or Paul Ince. Both great players who led by example, showing grit and determination. For goodness sake, I know Ladysaint said "one former captain", but surely it was bleedin' obvious she meant a former Saints' captain! Anyone who doesn't say Alan Ball clearly didn't see him play. He, more than anyone, got us back into the top flight and established us there. Chris Marsden as a suggestion? My God, you poor children!
St Landrew Posted 20 February, 2009 Share Posted 20 February, 2009 And hopefully the 2 captains chosen might be from the 2 teams we've just voted for. I thought it might be too obvious to bother mentioning.
rpb Posted 20 February, 2009 Share Posted 20 February, 2009 And hopefully the 2 captains chosen might be from the 2 teams we've just voted for. I thought it might be too obvious to bother mentioning. It didn't start off with that premise - the thread began, 'if you could bring back one former Captain who would it be, mainly for their leadership on the pitch not necessarily their skill.' It just seems to have evolved into a continuation of the Best Ever Saints XI thread...

It just seems to have evolved into a continuation of the Best Ever Saints XI thread... You're right. It was a total faux pas on my part to forget to ask for the posters choice of Captains fro teams A and B. So, I thought the thread could do a useful role, and so asked for the parameters to be changed [further up the thread]. By and large, people have chosen as if their choices were from the 2 teams anyway.

St Landrew Posted 21 February, 2009 Share Posted 21 February, 2009 And that's it peeps. I hope Ladysaint will forgive me for hi-jacking her thread, but we needed Captains for the teams, and forgotten to ask. The vast majority of the players mentioned actually came from teams A nd B. Which is understandable, as they are considerede the best Saints players. Go to this thread and look for the ©s. http://www.saintsweb.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=10009 IMO, the vast majority got it pretty much spot on too. Here's how they finished: MLT 3 Paine 1 Marsden 8 Case 23 Ball 22 Monkou 1 Steve Williams 5 Shearer 1 Dodd
