Al de Man Posted 11 February, 2009 Posted 11 February, 2009 More info required. What type of interface? 90% chance it's USB. What happens on-screen when you plug it in?
Thedelldays Posted 11 February, 2009 Author Posted 11 February, 2009 sorry yes.. it is a Verbatrim USB....I have it on "my computer" page now.... but when I try to transfer say a downloaded film onto it...it "ejects" itself from the computer during the transfer ffs
Essruu Posted 11 February, 2009 Posted 11 February, 2009 Would we be correct in assuming that you're using a Windows operating system?
Thedelldays Posted 11 February, 2009 Author Posted 11 February, 2009 Would we be correct in assuming that you're using a Windows operating system? vista.. it just managed 7gb of 11gb worth or music transfered on to it before it nobbed out...
Ponty Posted 11 February, 2009 Posted 11 February, 2009 Would we be correct in assuming that you're using a Windows operating system? I don't think that's the issue. I've, coincidentally, just backed up some of my music, videos and pictures onto a cheap, Asda 320gb portable hard-drive (USB driven) with no issues at all.
exit2 Posted 11 February, 2009 Posted 11 February, 2009 just got me a 320gb portable hard drive...trouble is, my computer does not "see it"....how do I resolve this..? cheers.. A few of the larger HDD's now do not appear as a drive letter as mass storage. The thing to do is right click the my computer icon, goto manage and then goto Disk Management. The drive should appear there, all you need to do then is mark as active and create a logical drive or extended drive depending on your requirements. Once that has been done just format it and away you go. Hope this helps, let me know.
Thedelldays Posted 11 February, 2009 Author Posted 11 February, 2009 done that exit..and seems to have worked so far... cheers

As i am considering getting one. Thanks, Col.
Guest Dark Sotonic Mills Posted 12 February, 2009 Posted 12 February, 2009 How much did you pay Ponty? As i am considering getting one. Thanks, Col. 500 GB from ASDA is about £75 at the moment. You can buy a 1TB online for the same or even less. http://www.scan.co.uk/product.aspx?ProductId=23329 http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?NOV-E1TB http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/1TB-LaCie-Hard-Disk-USB-20-Design-by-Neil-Poulton
Ponty Posted 12 February, 2009 Posted 12 February, 2009 How much did you pay Ponty? As i am considering getting one. Thanks, Col. I believe the portable 320gb one (with USB power lead as well as transfer) was £65, and the 500gb one with a 240v supply lead was £75. The portable one was a good price (at the time of buying) but the 'static' one was a bit expensive.

Baj Posted 15 February, 2009 Posted 15 February, 2009 nope.. still ejects itself after a minute or so... Power shortage. Is it a plug in the wall jobby or 2.5inch USB based external drive?
Thedelldays Posted 15 February, 2009 Author Posted 15 February, 2009 Power shortage. Is it a plug in the wall jobby or 2.5inch USB based external drive? just a USB hardrive...no external power...thing is, when I take it to another computer it does not do this....not a drama just annoying
Al de Man Posted 15 February, 2009 Posted 15 February, 2009 just a USB hardrive...no external power...thing is, when I take it to another computer it does not do this....not a drama just annoying Good thinking Baj. Try it in a different USB port or a powered hub if you have one.
Baj Posted 16 February, 2009 Posted 16 February, 2009 It's definatley a power issue. You're not using the cable it came with are you. You should have a usb cable that has one connection to the drive but TWO to the computer, this then provides it with enough juice to keep the drive powered, and not lose power (which is what is happening at the moment). A powered USB hub mayb not even be enough, you need that original cable to double up on power.
mdearlove Posted 16 February, 2009 Posted 16 February, 2009 you are plugging into USB 2.0 port aren't you? Also if you are plugging into a USB2.0 port on the front panel of a PC you can get power issues. Try plugging into the rear port
saint_stevo Posted 16 February, 2009 Posted 16 February, 2009 had the same issue with a External HDD, do as Baj says and get a cable that plugs into 2 ports on the p.c, gets enough power that way
