I got a message on a mailing list I am on (not football related) asking if anyone knew about a young footballer dying on the pitch during a Southampton match? The date would be sometime in the period between the wars - I think. The name could be Dyer, Millward or Nicklin surname.

I assume the person asking is sure it was a Saints player (i.e. not opposition).

I thought I'd try and help this person solve this puzzle. Does nayone here (perhaps amongst the more long in the tooth supporters like me) have any recollection of such an event? Maybe Fitzhugh Fella might know.

I can see all the jokes now about players dying on the pitch every week etc etc, especially with the name Dyer mentioned :) but this is a serious request for info.

Gary Chalk has just reminded me -

I see you replied in the negative but there was one

who died just days after receiving injuries at Watford in a reserve team match. George Frederick Mounsey died 3 November 1914.

Although before the dates mentioned its the only recorded Saints death related to a match.

It's only a game mate. They are not worth it.

Sometimes, reading us lot on here, I think it's far too important! One day you :smt054 Saints and the next day they :smt022. Far too many of those latter ones these days though!

Thanks Duncan, I'll let the person know that there may be a possibility. She was not too precise with the dates.

Cheers
