Rumour from Wolves

For completeness my friend has agreed to scan the newspaper article in and send it to me so people can see it first hand. Hopefully he will send it in the next day or so. Rather than emailing individuals does anyone have the ability to post it to the web (canit be done on here) or am I entering into dodgy ground if we copy an article?

OK, apologies for the 'insults'. But put me in the 'sceptical' camp.

The other thing that doesn't tie in, is the public outbursts from both Crouch and Corbett since the closed door friendly at st Marys.

Why would they do that ? unless this was a true rumour that was snubbed by Lowe & co. With Michael Wildes reported financial loss of his Merlon company, it wouldn't make sense for him to let his shares go for peanuts.

Right. This might help. It was not on line, but my friend got the article emailed through as follows:

Martin Swain

Express & Star

Monday 2nd February, evening edition

Steve Morgan, who tried to buy Liverpool in 2004 before taking over Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers has been spotted at St Mary’s stadium this last week with a view to purchasing the club at a knock down price. Such a venture could quickly ensure Championship safety for a struggling Saints team whose only ambition currently seems to be avoiding relegation. Former Wolves chairman, Sir Jack Hayward agreed to sell all of his shares for 10 pounds (17 dollars) in total on the condition Morgan invested 30 million pounds (59 million dollars) in Wolves. A similar proposition is thought to be currently negotiated between current chairman Rupert Lowe and Morgan.

A source from Molineux on Monday said the sale of the club was expected to go through in early March.

Manager Mick McCarthy is also tipped to make the move to the south coast along with Morgan, while Managing Director Jez Moxey will stay on as chief executive at Molineux.

The club statement read: "It is intended that the new capital, over a period of time, will be used to help re-establish Southampton and Wolves as Premiership clubs. Where Wolves is Morgan’s initial concern, returning the glory days of top league football to Hampshire is on the agenda.

"Although there would be a significant amount of money there will not be an 'open cheque book' approach to signing players; instead the club would build on the current strategy of steadily and progressively developing a team of young, hungry and talented players."

Morgan made his fortune as the founder of house builder Redrow plc before selling a majority shareholding in 2000.

He is chairman of a number of privately-owned companies including, Harrow Estates plc, one of the UK's contaminated land specialists.

He came close to buying Liverpool in 2004 and is thought to still hold shares in the Anfield club.

Hayward bought Wolves for two million pounds in 1990 and has invested 50 million pounds of his personal wealth in the club.

He had been searching for a successor since September 2003.

 I think your mate is winding you up!:smt081

I take it everyone realises this is a wind up.

That is not an article from a local newspaper. Read it, and then read a real article in the Echo or any newspaper. It's an appalling fake.

Why would the Express and Star, a local paper for the Black Country need to make no reference to Southampton (just "St Mary's" and "the club") but go into extreme precise detail about how Morgan bought Wolves a couple of years ago (I think their local paper would assume Wolves fans would know). Our Echo doesn't talk about Secure Retirement everytime they mention Lowe, do they?

  • If Wolverhampton Wanderers had made a "club statement" about how them and Southampton would be fighting to get into Premier League together then that would have been picked up by every newspaper in the land.
  • If Lowe had announced he was going to buy (say) Bournemouth and work on them together, don't you think there would be a few threads on it here? So what do the Wolves fans think on their messageboards?
  • Or if Gaydamak said he was going to buy Ipswich as well, don't you think it might be on South Today? And on SSN? Slightly big news, eh?
  • And how come our own Echo have decided not to bother to carry a story in another local paper about how another club in our league wants to buy us?

You've been proper done there, Torbay. Happy Facebooking chaps.

Ok well if it is a wind up then I will have been well and truely done. But he offered to scan the article for me, I didnt ask. He has no reason to wind me up and is a genuine person.

Further, this was his last facebook message to me:

Hi mate. Yeah I hope this article does come to fruition for you. The writer is 'Martin Swain' and his team. They seem to write all the Wolves stuff. My mate Sam sends me the paper every Monday and it's a pretty short but to the point article. I really can't see Steve Morgan investing in you guys though as I went to a supporter's meeting last month and he said nothing about this. Also he seems very keen on focusing on Wolves but I wouldn't put it past any millionaire to buy a club for a few quid. Investment in the Saints would be good I imagine.

Fingers crossed anyway. If you wanted the actual paper I will scan and mail it to you.

Best wishes

I have not actually been 'done' have I. Like other posters have said, I am very sceptical of it. I simply passed it on under the banner of a 'rumour' and asked to see if anyone else had heard anything to substantiate it.

Well, I think you have, it's pretty clear that "article" is a fake, and why on earth would a story that big not be on the Wolves section of the Express and Star website.

Have a look on there and see all the red hot stories keeping your mate's story about the owner of Wolverhampton Wanderers buying another Championship club away from the site.

Just think about it. If Lowe (or even Crouch) was about to buy Norwich, don't you think it would merit more than a paragraph in the Echo?

Not one Wolves messageboard has a word on it. Nothing on the BBC. Nothing on Sky. Nothing anywhere.

Putting the rumour up in the first place was fair enough, carry on, we all like a rumour. When I saw it a couple of days ago, I thought it was harmless silliness.

It's when you/your mate start using made up articles from the local press as "evidence" that it starts to look silly. The only way those words appeared in the Express and Star like that were if the E&S run a "internet rumours" column with a policy of printing any old rubbish.

I am not being funny, but I have given my personal facebook account out to people so they can see who I am. So I take great offence to you tarnishing me with making up a rumour. I have no reason to at all. I suggest you keep your powder dry until I have heard back from the editor and / or got the article. I notice you have not bothered to check the facebook messages? Why would I reveal myself? Everyone who has requested my facebook account, including those who originally insulted me I have provided it to.

I will apologise if my friend has made this up. I only hope and the others afford me the same if my friend and / or the editor provdes the story?

You are welcome to see the messages for yourself if you PM me.

I hope that any potential investor does not read this board. The personal insults and negativity would put me off as a Saints fan. I am seriously considering bothering with this forum again.

And for the record...Wolves forums do not get half the use that this one does if you bothered to look....

Bingo!

It's just like the old days.

We used to get someone doing the old "investors won't invest because of the negativity on this forum" once or twice a week back in that long, crazy summer of 2007.

Help me, Rhonda.

Just make sure you ask the editor why the fu ck he didn't go a little bit bigger on what would probably be the biggest story in West Midlands football since Villa won the European Cup. If I was him, I'd have put it on the website, at least.

Oh, and you could also ask Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club why "club statements" aren't available to Wolverhampton fans who don't live in the E&S circulation area or bought the paper on the day your mate did. Why don't they put their "club statements" out on their own website. After all, with their messageboards not as good as ours, it must be the only place to go for "club statements".

Here's that not very important "club statement" again: "It is intended that the new capital, over a period of time, will be used to help re-establish Southampton and Wolves as Premiership clubs.

Why isn't Morgan telling Wolves fans this through the normal channels?

With this kind of attitude to keeping his fanbase informed I wouldn't want him at Saints

Guilty before proven innocent. Why don't you stop shooting from your hip and actually take me up on my offer? Do you know what I will actually PM my name. I suppose my facebook account will be bogus next??

Given West Brom and Villa are both in the Prem (Villa are currently 3rd in the league) they might have something to say about your claim that this represents the biggest story in West Midlands football since Villa on the European Cup?!

Has St David been invited on the local radio station yet? I'd ask Saintlee but he's still on a plumbing job in Hull without any electricity and internet access. ;)

Err - "football club 3rd in the League" is not really a big story. It's good news for Villa fans, and football neutrals but is not earth shattering. "Football club in Premier League" again is not a "big story" as there are twenty there each season, well done West Brom for being there.

Football club release "club statement" about their intention to buy and develop another club in the same league is an absolutely gigantic story, unheard of and not permitted since Maxwell tried to merge Oxford and Reading and then buy Derby as well back in the eighties.

If you seriously think the black country Express and Star, one of the biggest regional dailys in Britain would hide a story like that in one paragraph, not put it on their website and Wolverhampton Wanderers would not publish their "club statement" anywhere on their website or through any other traditional media channels (BBC WM maybe, or WCR FM) then sorry, I can't help you.

You seem to be concerned with you and your mate and facebook.

I don't care about any of that. It's just a silly story, it was a good rumour, well done, but the "news story" is b o l l o c k s.

not saying its true, but anyone investing in us is only a big story as far north as Chandlers Ford!

True enough. But "Wolves owner to buy another football club" is reasonably big news in Wolverhampton. But it looks like you had to buy a particular edition of one newspaper on one specific day to find out about it.

If you bothered to read the thread I have emailed the paper. Unfortunately they do not respond as quickly as you would like.

You fail to grasp the key point. I have said all the way along I don't think there is any vaildity in this. I point you in the direction of my first post. But rather than sitting in my ivory tower insulting others, I have bothered to get back in contact with the person and contact the paper. Have you?

Again, I draw your attention to the first post, when I asked if anyone else had heard anything similar. You have not so fine. Thanks for your contribution to the post, but noone is making you continue posting here.

There are some really decent people on here who spend time reading posts carefully and make well thought out responses. Others just look for opportunities to attack people. Unfortunately you are in the later category. I have not once resorted to personal insults.

To be fair to the lad, he never claimed any of this to be fact in his first post.

I agree. The negativity has been way beyond the original intention, I'm sure. Torbay Saint is a genuine supporter whose loyalty and care for Saints is beyond reproach. He was only trying to pass on what he'd heard without comment. I know the person who sent the message is also genuine. I've known both families for many years. Any sheet in the wind gives a glimmer of hope in these desperate times. In any other club or business our leaders would have been sacked for business failure. Can we add Football PLC Chairs to Gordon Brown's list of persons not deserving of bonusses?

PS If the share price continues to drop at the current rate we'll all be able to chip in to but RL and MW out! Happy Days!!

Careful, your starting to sound like the other half of a famous double act we had on here a few years ago before they went to Bournemouth.

Well I have spoken to the paper this morning. If the article exists it is being faxed to me. Hopefully one way or another the witch hunt can stop at that point?

Excuse the micro-analysis but not sure why you say "IF the article exists"...didn't they say on the phone whether it existed or not? Also, not sure why the need to fax it through to you when your friend is already in the process of scanning it for you to post here? (how's he getting on with that by the way?)

Thanks in advance for the clarification.

I spoke to someone on the sport desk. Believe it or not reporters have better things to do than to respond to the requests of someone on an internet forum! The kind lady who was clearly on the administrative side of things did not know what went to print on Feb 2nd. And yes, my friend is sending me a copy of the article but I thought it would be better received if it came from the actual paper. No doubt if it did come from my friend it would still be classed as a fake.

If you would like to check up on this feel free. the news desk is 01902 319410. However, I rang the switch board and got put through to the sports desk, which is 01902 313131.
