Didcot Saint Posted 4 February, 2009 Posted 4 February, 2009 I think this bloke is awful. Everytime he gets the ball a massive hoof up the pitch ensues normally straight back to the oppositions possession again. He looks clumsy and should have stopped Sheff Utd scoring their late goal last night. The worst defender and clogger i have ever seen play for us. What does everyone else think?
Ponty Posted 4 February, 2009 Posted 4 February, 2009 Hope you don't mind if I change the title. It's a headline I've been itching to use since he signed.

Bailey Posted 4 February, 2009 Posted 4 February, 2009 I think we've been crying out for a defender like Saeijs for the last year or so. He's a no-nonsense defender who clears his lines and doesn't do anything fancy. He wins the majority of his headers and looks composed on the ball when he needs to be. To criticise the guy is very harsh IMO, and I'd even go as far as saying that he's been one of our best players in recent games.

Didcot Saint Posted 4 February, 2009 Author Posted 4 February, 2009 Was last night your first game? Ridiculous statement. No it f in was'nt. Every home game and most away. That is what i see and that is why i asked others opinion. See you Sat at Watford?

Well we'll see how the thread goes then. I'd imagine most who have seen him would say he's pretty good. Wotte said on the radio he was his best defender in last nights game. For you describe him as the worst defender you have ever seen play for us is just odd.
Didcot Saint Posted 4 February, 2009 Author Posted 4 February, 2009 Totally Agree... he was our best player last night.. not difficult mind. Seems i got that one wrong then guys!
scaramanga Posted 4 February, 2009 Posted 4 February, 2009 what do i think? i think you are talking out of your arse did you not see the goal line clearance or the numerous headers and tackles he won he covered our two supposed full backs on a number of occasions and the only reason he did not intercept the shot for the goal was our super manager had sent him up field to play as a striker. and actually he very nearly made it the full length of the pitch to make the tackle.
Bailey Posted 4 February, 2009 Posted 4 February, 2009 For you to describe him as the worst defender you have ever seen play for us is just odd. Agreed, especially considering how poor Alan Bennett was on his debut! In fairness to the lad, he did improve dramatically once he'd settled in.

What does everyone else think? ya gotta be kidding I can think of loads we've had that have been worse than him, jakobson, powell etc can rember the first couple of games Alan Bennett had for us ya would have said he was the worst defender ever! but he got better
Mr X Posted 4 February, 2009 Posted 4 February, 2009 Agreed, especially considering how poor Alan Bennett was on his debut! In fairness to the lad, he did improve dramatically once he'd settled in. wow great minds think alike
Bailey Posted 4 February, 2009 Posted 4 February, 2009 Catchy thread title though J9? Yes Ponty, well done. I think my post title in response to the original post is just as innovative.

Wotte said on the radio he was his best defender in last nights game. For you describe him as the worst defender you have ever seen play for us is just odd. His defending is not THAT bad its just the big aimless boots up the pitch that i have noticed more and more especially in the last two games.
wild-saint Posted 4 February, 2009 Posted 4 February, 2009 Totally Agree... he was our best player last night.. not difficult mind. Thirded, The man is decent in the air, reads the game well, tackels well and generally is what we have been crying out for all season. The reason we concede is the inability to to defend through the fullback positions. clearly didcot you attend matches regularly and your support is unquestionable but your jugement of a player is definately flawed at best. All IMO of course
NickG Posted 4 February, 2009 Posted 4 February, 2009 solid, composed but knows when to clear it. made a mistake for the goal. runs with ball out of defence. Very very good signing -for our current level. Far from being worst, one of the better over last couple of seasons -appreciate still early days.
Ponty Posted 4 February, 2009 Posted 4 February, 2009 Yes Ponty, well done. I think my post title in response to the original post is just as innovative. Quite good that. If you have any more ideas for thread/post titles let me know

Bailey Posted 4 February, 2009 Posted 4 February, 2009 His defending is not THAT bad its just the big aimless boots up the pitch that i have noticed more and more especially in the last two games. Look at it as him clearing his lines as opposed to holding onto the ball for too long and getting caught out. There were a couple of occasions last night where Saeijs did in fact look to create an opening by running forward with the ball, trying to pick a pass. Rio Ferdinand like it was! Seriously though, Saeijs just does the basics really well and whilst it isn't always pleasing on the eye to see someone smack the ball forward, I'd rather he did that than mess about with it at the back. An old-school, no-nonsense defender. Will prove to be an essential part of our team if we're to have any chance of avoiding the drop.
Chez Posted 4 February, 2009 Posted 4 February, 2009 His defending is not THAT bad its just the big aimless boots up the pitch that i have noticed more and more especially in the last two games. you are right there (doesn't mean Seijs is a poor player though) but Wotton is mostly to blame for that. In addition Wotte has clearly asked his fullbacks to play long down the line rather than short inside passes. In fact I would blame Wotte for the ugly style.

Yep i would agree thinking back, i do remember one good forward run and shot i think? So it would seem i have got the bloke wrong. Thanks for your comments and lets start praying to the gods we win Saturday or it's definitely curtains and League1 here we come. I will still do my120mile round trip every home game, for as long as there is a club to support. Now there's a good thread!
Ponty Posted 4 February, 2009 Posted 4 February, 2009 That's a hell of a U-turn DS but fair play to you.
beavis17 Posted 4 February, 2009 Posted 4 February, 2009 to be fair to the guy he was actually put upfront for the last 2 or 3 minutes to try and get us a winner so there should have been defensive cover for him and anyway hes a breath of fresh air to the incompetence of lancashire at this level
Didcot Saint Posted 4 February, 2009 Author Posted 4 February, 2009 That's a hell of a U-turn DS but fair play to you. IMO i have'nt taken to him but that is why i asked others opinions! That was the point of the thread and i have been proved wrong with sensible replies that made me think. Cheers all and COYR
Wiltshire Saint Posted 4 February, 2009 Posted 4 February, 2009 I'm with Didcot Saint on this. He is awful. Well said Didcot.
NickG Posted 4 February, 2009 Posted 4 February, 2009 think even Didcot disagrees with himself now so you are on your own!
sidthesquid Posted 4 February, 2009 Posted 4 February, 2009 He is what everyone (including me) has said we needed all season. As Terry & Ferdinand weren't available he was best we could get on our budget. Will be a legend before the end of the season. Every team needs a clogger, and the Dutch are experts at clogs. Btw, did anyone hear him on the radio saying he liked it here because if he hoofed it into the crowd in Holland the fans booed, but in England they cheer him on
Saint Fen Posted 4 February, 2009 Posted 4 February, 2009 I think he has looked very good, just what we need. The trouble is we also need a big lump up front and a centre midfielder!

Bath Saint Posted 4 February, 2009 Posted 4 February, 2009 I totally disagree with Didcot. He was awful last night.

I seriously think that you're either a) on a wind up b) someone who doesn't go to any games c) a person who should go watch another sport as you have no idea about football. OK, he was partially at fault for the winner (no more than Davis mind) and other than that he was our best defender, also, our man most comfortable on the ball and he got in a few headers in their box. In short, you're talking out of your arse...

Excellent tackles, goal line clearance, numerous headers won and wasn't afraid to run forward with the ball.
Deano6 Posted 4 February, 2009 Posted 4 February, 2009 Saeijs was awful last night. Truly abysmal. On the other hand, he was really quite good.
S4INT Posted 4 February, 2009 Posted 4 February, 2009 He's exactly what we've been missing for a while. I both like and rate the guy as a CB. His distribution is pretty terrible though...
saint1977 Posted 4 February, 2009 Posted 4 February, 2009 He does his job with little fuss and was only caught for the winner as we'd gone gung ho for a late winner. One of JP's better decisions was to bring him in. We need one or two more like him, if anything.

If you listen to Saeijs' interview after the Barnsley game, you get the impression that Wotte played a key role in bringing him here!
Saint Fan CaM Posted 4 February, 2009 Posted 4 February, 2009 Saeijs was our best player last night. Big presence, not afraid to tackle, very good anticipation (way ahead of any other player in the team), won almost all headers, ran forward on more than one occassion etc. So no, your analysis is totally wrong. He reminds me quite a bit of Claus actually.
Saint Bones Posted 4 February, 2009 Posted 4 February, 2009 Saeijs was awful last night. Truly abysmal. On the other hand, he was really quite good. So you are saying he's Awfully Good ?

Hmmm - actually I think you'll find Saeijis took a free kick 25-30 yds from goal (which KD should have taken) then had to turn on himself and thus lost that initial half yard.
N/West Saint Posted 5 February, 2009 Posted 5 February, 2009 Not had chance to see him play yet, (Birmingham my next game). But it sounds like he is woote we have needed at the back. Its a shame we can't keep him for next season.
saintwarwick Posted 5 February, 2009 Posted 5 February, 2009 He's exactly what we've been missing for a while. I both like and rate the guy as a CB. His distribution is pretty terrible though... Not really, he is there to defend, distribution is down to the midfield.
lordswoodsaints Posted 5 February, 2009 Posted 5 February, 2009 good player imo. heres the stats 5 games with him........................... won 1 lost 2 drawn 2 conceded 8 previous 5 games without him........... won 0 lost 4 drawn 1 conceded 11 (although one of these was against manu who scored 3)
