L1Minus10 Posted 4 February, 2009 Share Posted 4 February, 2009 England, that's it.... and I watch more Hampshire Cricket in the summer. Take Saints out and I actually don't like football much. I can never sit through 90 mins of 2 other teams on the TV and I don't watch Match of the Day any more. The game is ****ed due to the money disparity involved and the set up of the Premier League. Andy_Porter Posted 4 February, 2009 Share Posted 4 February, 2009 When Fiorentina went out of business in 2002 and then came back as ACF Fiorentina it only took them three seasons to get from the fourth tier of Italian football to the Champions league... If AFC Southampton could do the same i'd probably support them.
Kenilworthy Posted 4 February, 2009 Share Posted 4 February, 2009 [ Keniworthy - My older brothers were great fans of Southampton Speedway, and everyone in the team would have been a hero to them. Who was your father..? Cheers Roy Bartlett - would have been late 40s early 50s I think. He suffered a lot of injuries so didn't get as many rides as he would have liked. He also rode for Poole Pirates.

Bushey Saint Posted 4 February, 2009 Share Posted 4 February, 2009 Cheery little thread this, isn't it? That said, in the unlikely event of SFC being wound up, I may follow Ipswich or Yeovil having lived in both towns. Can't say that I'd support any other team though although I'd be quite likely to attend games on an opportunity basis.
Greedyfly Posted 5 February, 2009 Share Posted 5 February, 2009 Ha Ha - Distance from Vienna to Perth Distance is 13,240 kilometers or 8227 miles or 7149 nautical miles That's a fair hike. I think Alpine will be enjoying some nice crisp weather - whereas we are coping continual 40 degree days. You can ski here - but only in the ocean In regards to the post - Bugger, who knows.. I think id just follow the english league as a whole. It wouold be a very , very sad day. Exactly what I said....Close enough
Whitey Grandad Posted 5 February, 2009 Share Posted 5 February, 2009 I would say Bournemouth but they will probably beat us to it. I watched some enjoyable games there many years ago with my father-in law until he died. My family are all from Tottenham way so I saw a few games there back when Jimmy Greaves was still playing. I suppose I could still get my footie fix from refereeing on a Sunday morning where the real stuff is played. It's the beautiful game, the King of Sports, the finest game in the world, but somehow it hasn't seemed like it this season.

miserableoldgit Posted 5 February, 2009 Share Posted 5 February, 2009 My 11 year son asked me this recently. I feel kind of guilty of inflicting Saints on my two boys, especially as we make a 260 mile round trip to suffer. It's so sad. When I was 11 I had no concept of clubs going into administration or any idea who the chairman was I hope it doesn't happen. But it's not impossible - every day I drive past a deserted Woolworth's that shows that firms you always thought would be a fixture can go out of business. And the story of Southampton Speedway strikes a chord as my dad used to ride for them. I think I would lose general interest in going to football every week, but might go and watch our best local side - Leamington FC - from time to time. I can't help feeling that I might actually be a lot happier, and definitely wealthier. Southampton Speedway closed in 1963 just after they became National League champions. It still rankles me after all of these years that we lost something like this and have never been able to replace it. Thank goodness that Sky still feature Speedway quite heavily in its schedules. Rational Rich Posted 5 February, 2009 Share Posted 5 February, 2009 I wouldn't support anyone, but I'd go to watch Manchester United. Once you take the passion and the heart out of the equation, you're left with a just product and so you may as well buy the best. BTW, this will never happen as long as there is a Saints somewhere in the footballing period.

labibs Posted 5 February, 2009 Share Posted 5 February, 2009 If we did go under, (which I don't think we will) then inevitably an AFC Southampton would be started up. That's where my allegiances would lie. I couldn't support or folowanother club side. I would still watch football (I still watch MOTD now) but apart from England games, the passion would be gone for me. Here's a question for you, if an AFC Southampton was created, do you think we would ever make it to League football? Apparently AFC Wimbledon are not that far away from it now. SFC Forever Posted 5 February, 2009 Share Posted 5 February, 2009 If the club was to go under then just like Aldershot we would see it rise again. Unlike Aldershot though we would still have a reasonable fan base prepared to watch and support the team no matter what.
SaintDonkey Posted 5 February, 2009 Share Posted 5 February, 2009 If hypothetically Saints did cease to be I guess I don't think I could ever 'support' another team in the same way I do Southampton. I wouldn't lose interest in football though so I guess I'd just have to go and watch my local team - Arsenal. If you factor in travel it would cost me far less for an Arsenal season ticket than it would a Saints one. However if AFC Southampton did rise from the ashes I'd support them - although admittedly I'm less likely to fork out for travel down to watch us play Hythe & Dibden in the Wessex league so it might be supporting from afar for a while! CLOTH EARS Posted 5 February, 2009 Share Posted 5 February, 2009 Were you there? Bloody cold wasn't it? Windsor dominated for the first 3 mins of each half. Yeah I was there! Even had the pleasure of meeting Barry Davies ( BBC Commentator ) in the directors room. I stood on the covered terracing on the side opposite your main stand in the 1st half and stood behind the goal into which Totton were shooting in the 2nd half. Having the planes going over every 2 minutes drove me nuts, God knows how the locals cope with that!

PhilB Posted 5 February, 2009 Share Posted 5 February, 2009 Accrington Stanley disappeared and now they're back, same for Aldershot, Wimbledon went but now they're back on the verge of going up into the Conference as AFC Wimbledon. Leeds Utd, Bournemouth & Luton have all gone into administration but they're still supported by their faithfuls, although it looks like Bournemouth & Luton will drop. If we drop into League 1 and/or go into administration and lose points it will be very painful but as long as SFC is still there I'll still be there. To me it matters more that there's an SFC, preferrably in the higher leagues but if not then so be it. If SFC disappeared altogether I'd just be another football fan as supporting another "side" would be unthinkable.

Its not a provocative question - over a hundered posts have taken it with the sentiment that was intended. A pity you didnt read the other replies before shooting your mouth off. 2. You didnt have to answer it. The point of the question in a roundabout way was "if Saints no longer existed (and lets face it, the future has never looked more in doubt than now, though I am sure Duncan can sift through the annals and find a worse situation), would your love of football override your love of SFC sufficiently to permit you to suppport someone else ?" I was sure the answer to this question would indicate a split mentality, and so it has proven..

alpine_saint Posted 6 February, 2009 Author Share Posted 6 February, 2009 I am still sort-of-interested in football, so I was thinking that if I supported a local Austrian team in future it would sort of side-step the clash-of-loyalties issue. I am from Southampton, and do not feel I would ever have the same emotion for any other team. But I have spent a large percentage of my life living here now (ca. 25%), so think it would be OK to show some support to the local team here. Only thing is, they are so crap they would probably lose at SMS.

red&white56 Posted 6 February, 2009 Share Posted 6 February, 2009 I have a choice of 3; 1/. Crawley Town - closest to where i live, and have already been in administration, so I could feel at home there! 2/. Brighton - another club fallen on hard times - they don't even has a decent ground (yet) and play in Div 1. Anybody remember when they were a good team and played in the FA Cup final (sound just like Saints) 3/. Leeds - used to live there. If any team's had it worse than us, it Leeds
