Smalls Posted 3 February, 2009 Posted 3 February, 2009 Sorry, but with all these weather warnings and conditions generally awful the club can expect the lowest crowd ever tonight. Why oh why oh why.
Pancake Posted 3 February, 2009 Posted 3 February, 2009 Flipping hell, a bit of snow and this country turns to panic stations! Just take sensible precautions.
skintsaint Posted 3 February, 2009 Posted 3 February, 2009 Sheff Utd will be there for the taking tonight thats why...havent they had to come down on coach?
Window Cleaner Posted 3 February, 2009 Posted 3 February, 2009 Sheff Utd will be there for the taking tonight thats why...havent they had to come down on coach? Plus their captain is out, they're still reformatting after Beattie left as well.
Thedelldays Posted 3 February, 2009 Posted 3 February, 2009 Flipping hell, a bit of snow and this country turns to panic stations! Just take sensible precautions. indeed..a bit of a joke really
aintforever Posted 3 February, 2009 Posted 3 February, 2009 I think playing in 8 inches of snow will be our best chance of 3 points.
JustMike Posted 3 February, 2009 Posted 3 February, 2009 Sorry, but with all these weather warnings and conditions generally awful the club can expect the lowest crowd ever tonight. Why oh why oh why. why is it crazy? The snow is melting, the police and officials have given the all clear so where is the problem?
SaintNeil90 Posted 3 February, 2009 Posted 3 February, 2009 Makes me laugh the amount of people whining the game is on. If you lot dont want to go because of 'the weather' then dont bother. I will be there cheering on the lads. Like someone said above, united have had to travel down on a coach in these conditions, best chance of beating them tonight.
Thedelldays Posted 3 February, 2009 Posted 3 February, 2009 I wonder how long it will be before lowe gets the blame somehow
once_bitterne Posted 3 February, 2009 Posted 3 February, 2009 Sorry, but with all these weather warnings and conditions generally awful the club can expect the lowest crowd ever tonight. Why oh why oh why. The crowd figure will include all s/t holders and those who have already bought tickets regardless of whether a light dusting of snow 'forced' them to stay at home under the duvet so I doubt the crowd will be significantly effected by playing tonight. It makes you wonder how countries like Canada cope.....
Gingeletiss Posted 3 February, 2009 Posted 3 February, 2009 I think playing in 8 inches of snow will be our best chance of 3 points. Plus a row of big snowmen in our goal, and we may keep a clean sheet...
dubai_phil Posted 3 February, 2009 Posted 3 February, 2009 lol Reminds me of a game against Everton many many years ago at the Dell, when they didn't want it to go ahead, we got our orange ball out and whooped their butts To those that go, hope it isn't too lonely in the stands and keep warm!
Bourno Posted 3 February, 2009 Posted 3 February, 2009 Sorry, but with all these weather warnings and conditions generally awful the club can expect the lowest crowd ever tonight. Why oh why oh why. It would probably cost us more to postpone and rearrange than would be gained by a few extra fans turning up.
hodds Posted 3 February, 2009 Posted 3 February, 2009 Would make sense financially to postpone to a saturday when its an fa cup weekend, but id take 3 points tonight even if its a small gate and freezing cold.
Thedelldays Posted 3 February, 2009 Posted 3 February, 2009 Would make sense financially to postpone to a saturday when its an fa cup weekend, but id take 3 points tonight even if its a small gate and freezing cold. considering sheff utd are still in the FA Cup..when do you expect this HOME game to be played..?
alki_in_korea Posted 3 February, 2009 Posted 3 February, 2009 last time i saw saints in the snow we beat liverpool 4-2 at the dell.Think matty got a hatrick with 2 pens n maybe maskell scored a header. Those were the days
Polaroid Saint Posted 3 February, 2009 Posted 3 February, 2009 We got six inches of snow yesterday, which is now compressed into ice, and heavy snow falling a'top of it covering it up and making it verrr slippy on the roads. I wouldn't want several thousand people driving to my place tonight... ...properly dangerous (plus I haven't got enough beer n pies in). Canada (etc) cope because they have the infrastructure designed to cope with it; they spend millions more on it than we can/do. In fairness we do alright considering the rare few days of snow we get. However, I understand Southampton is much less affected than we are here, and SMS is by the river... ...so, cool. Game on. Orange ball, Orangeboom, Oranje!
trousers Posted 3 February, 2009 Posted 3 February, 2009 why is it crazy? The snow is melting Worst case scenario then....the re-freezing of melting snow tonight is worse than no thaw.... Michael Fish 1984
bungle Posted 3 February, 2009 Posted 3 February, 2009 Would make sense financially to postpone to a saturday when its an fa cup weekend, but id take 3 points tonight even if its a small gate and freezing cold. considering sheff utd are still in the FA Cup..when do you expect this HOME game to be played..? Let us also not forget that all other FA Cup round dates have league fixtures on, so not only would SU need to get knocked out, but the team we were playing on 6th round or semi-final day would still have to be in the FA Cup. These teams are Birmingham City and Sheffield Wednesday. So, er, yeh.
JustMike Posted 3 February, 2009 Posted 3 February, 2009 Worst case scenario then....the re-freezing of melting snow tonight is worse than no thaw.... Michael Fish 1984 but according to the weather "experts" in 2009 its not going to drop low enough tonight to refreeze
JRM Posted 3 February, 2009 Posted 3 February, 2009 it is a joke, south west trains were an absolute mess this morning, at woking station they had no idea what trains were going and when, nothing on the board, and the advice was still best not to travel....... a lot of our support rely on getting the train etc. going to be easily the smallest crowd for a competitive game at st marys in terms on the number of people in the ground. Feel really sorry for Sheff Utd fans contemplating the drive down and late night drive back.
CLOTH EARS Posted 3 February, 2009 Posted 3 February, 2009 I remember saints beating Man Utd 1-0 with a ****erill goal in the snow at the Dell about 86' ? I also remember saints beating Everton 3-0 at the Dell in the late 70's on a snow covered pitch.

Bristol_Benji Posted 3 February, 2009 Posted 3 February, 2009 honesty guys, i dont think you quite understand the problem and danger the journey will cause for many. You guys in southampton really havent seen half the snow we've seen in the east. Many roads off the main a-roads in guildford and london are well over 30cm deep with snow. Where there is no snow there is thick thick ice. Sure, we can get out, but its dangerous (someone literally just tried in my road and slid their mini into a tree!). Getting there is feasible though, however, it's the travelling back that will be a problem - darkness and black ice will make it VERY dangerous, especially off the main roads. I'd love to go and use my season ticket but im concerned about the side roads when i travel back as they'll be much much iceier at 11pm). If only i had spikes on my tyres!
derry Posted 3 February, 2009 Posted 3 February, 2009 The pitch was covered, the snow moved from the covers, then the covers removed. The pitch will be same as Saturday, maybe a fraction softer. It's raining here now and the snow is melting.
ahill Posted 3 February, 2009 Posted 3 February, 2009 I agree - you can't even get there in your helicopter because Soton Airport is closed. Getting there is probably not the problem - getting home could well be as more snow is forecast.
Doctoroncall Posted 3 February, 2009 Posted 3 February, 2009 The crowd figure will include all s/t holders and those who have already bought tickets regardless of whether a light dusting of snow 'forced' them to stay at home under the duvet so I doubt the crowd will be significantly effected by playing tonight. It makes you wonder how countries like Canada cope..... ...they get snow EVERY year lasting for a few months so have the equipment to deal with it. Easy really. London gets the worst snowfall in 18 years.
Hatch Posted 3 February, 2009 Posted 3 February, 2009 They should bring the kick off forward to 5 o'clock or something. Give all 150 attendees time to get home afterwards.
COMEONYOUREDS Posted 3 February, 2009 Posted 3 February, 2009 last time i saw saints in the snow we beat liverpool 4-2 at the dell.Think matty got a hatrick with 2 pens n maybe maskell scored a header. Those were the days my first ever game! agreed, those were the days!

Getting there is probably not the problem - getting home could well be as more snow is forecast. I wouldn't have thought landing a helicopter at Southampton would be a problem. It's only the runway, taxiways and parking bays for aeroplanes that would be affected. ATC/fire cover would still be operating.

Errr like calm down mate - it's too dangerous to travel - don't go. The symantic are pretty simple really. I appreciate your predicament but we are not talking rocket science are we. Car into tree - means slippery road - darkness and black ice means very dangerous road conditions - shall I travel to SMS - ummmm maybe give this one a miss. Will it be the smallest crowd for years - could be - do I feel guilty about not putting my neck on the line for this one - probably not. Shheeeesh...!

TheSaint75 Posted 3 February, 2009 Posted 3 February, 2009 Sorry, but with all these weather warnings and conditions generally awful the club can expect the lowest crowd ever tonight. Why oh why oh why. Ahhh you poor thing, get your mittens and ear warmers out along with the snow chains and you might just about survive these torrid conditions! I can't wait TBH
Jackie@home Posted 3 February, 2009 Posted 3 February, 2009 Notice all these people who think it should go ahead live in Southampton. The majority of Saints supporters don't live in the city. Had Solent on this morning and it was taking 2 hours for people to drive along the A31 from Ringwood to the M27. The group of people that sit around me in the Kingsland all use this route. What's it going to be like at 10 o' clock tonight? I always use my season ticket, but as my husband is away in Cologne and I would have to drive there and back at night on my own, he, understandably, doesn't want me to go. Just announced another 2 accidents on the M27 and one on the M3. Still, seeing as the club has already got my money, they don't worry if we can actually turn up or not.

Just really want to see the next game after actually seeing 'fight' against swansea. Annoyed the club havent taken into consideration those who live further away.
buctootim Posted 3 February, 2009 Posted 3 February, 2009 My American and Canadian colleagues are laughing at how crap we are about dealing with a little bit of snow. I just drove 100 miles this morning without the slightest problem - in fact the journey was better than usual because of lack of traffic. The only problem was following one idiot for a few miles - every time he came to a shiny part of the road (a puddle cwhich presumably he thought was ice) he braked hard - which apart from almost causing accidents was the worst thing to do on ice anyway. No reason why the game shouldnt go ahead.
Chez Posted 3 February, 2009 Posted 3 February, 2009 I remember saints beating Man Utd 1-0 with a ****erill goal in the snow at the Dell about 86' ? I remember that game in 86. Bloody hell it was cold and only one team fancied it. I pitch like that would be perfect for our new found `combative' style.

If you don't drive like a plank you should be fine
Toadhall Saint Posted 3 February, 2009 Posted 3 February, 2009 A bit of snow and cold is not enough to call a game off - seems as if the ref in this instance is up for the game! Which makes a change!
IN MY DAY Posted 3 February, 2009 Posted 3 February, 2009 Someones done the number crunching, with tonights attendance 10-12k, possibly re-schedule 15-17k if the cost to cancel is greater than the difference on the two gates then its a no-brainer for Mr Lowes calculater. In all honesty the ground staff can probably get the pitch ready, its the people travelling which is the problem. I'm working in Bursledon / Park Gate and the roads are clear, i've just travelled to Bitterne West End and its a complete nightmare.
This Charming Man Posted 3 February, 2009 Posted 3 February, 2009 It's snowing heavily here in Andover still, luckily as I'm not a big poofter, I'll still be travelling down tonight.
Panda Posted 3 February, 2009 Posted 3 February, 2009 Sorry, but with all these weather warnings and conditions generally awful the club can expect the lowest crowd ever tonight. Why oh why oh why. You can't just call a game off because you don't think many fans will turn up! We would have to call our games off if that were the criteria!! I think the league might be unimpressed too if we cancelled without an official declaring the pitch unfit or the H&S people saying the stadium was unsafe. Was this just another way of having a go at the club? It is the fashion these days ...
Appy Posted 3 February, 2009 Posted 3 February, 2009 It's snowing heavily here in Andover still, luckily as I'm not a big poofter, I'll still be travelling down tonight. I'm also in andover. Its just died down a bit. I will be heading down tonight.
Whitey Grandad Posted 3 February, 2009 Posted 3 February, 2009 The club can't just call off the game because it's cold, or rainy, or because they don't think the crowd will be very big. There would be big sanctions from the League. If it's called off by the ref or the police then it's a different matter.
St.Thomas7 Posted 3 February, 2009 Posted 3 February, 2009 To be honest I'm a bit disapointed at this thread... When I saw the title I thought one of our players had a new nickname I didn't know about...

Flyer Posted 3 February, 2009 Posted 3 February, 2009 Well its coming down hard in the city centre now. I still think theres a good chance it will be called off later, especially with no undersoil heating.
