rallyboy Posted yesterday at 10:26 Posted yesterday at 10:26 Walked through there last night, whatever the funding issues, it's pretty clear that nothing has been done on some roads for months. Whenever I see clips like that one of Bradford that makes you think the place is a complete shithole, you realise that visitors who come through Derby Road or St Mary's Street must get the same impression of the whole city. Thankfully the new Southampton logo that was produced by a London company for £80,000 looks worth every penny and definitely not like something that a 10-year-old banged together in the lunchbreak. The council should be ashamed. 1

hypochondriac Posted yesterday at 11:05 Posted yesterday at 11:05 I'm not a huge fan of selectively taking shit bits of a city and presenting them as representative of the experience everywhere. Southampton is nowhere near the best place to live in the UK but it's nowhere near the worst either. We have lovely green open spaces, some reasonable areas for entertainment and we are also close to other wonderful areas of Hampshire. Certainly there's a lot more rundown areas in the UK despite our drawbacks. 1
Turkish Posted yesterday at 12:07 Posted yesterday at 12:07 Southampton had the potential to be one of Europes great cities. Im not joking it's got it all. A great coastline, a history with a mix of modern and old, a decent climate relatively for the UK, a ready made tourist industry thanks to the cruise ships, an airport, an hour from London. Instead of that it's become a run down shit hole. I was back a few weeks ago for the first time in 3 years and it gets worse every time i come back, certainly kills any thoughts of ever moving back. 4

Yep. The potential is there, but it's never been fulfilled, and is very much going in the wrong direction. I had a couple of hours to kill in Southampton this morning while waiting for a vehicle repair. There was a skirmish near the Marlands, homeless dotted everywhere, empty units, and it just looks increasingly disjointed and tired. I saw a few tourists (Norwegian I think) wearing lanyards near the bargate - Christ knows what they made of the place.
miserableoldgit Posted yesterday at 17:06 Author Posted yesterday at 17:06 It is very difficult and strange for me. I am Southampton through and through.......born and bred here. I used to regularly go into town most weeks, but I haven't been into the town centre for around 15 months. Nothing to draw me in anymore. The "regeneration" is going on and on......there is virtually nothing to attract me. Seems to have lost it's identity....

I think having a good football team contributes to the mood and appeal of the city. I was a student in Newcastle in the 1990's and Sir John Hall used the football team as a vehicle for raising the profile of the North East.

Do cities have good football teams because they’re great cities or are cities great because they have good football teams?? 🤔🤔🤔
saint francis Posted 7 hours ago Posted 7 hours ago I was in town last week. Mrs f likes to go in Primark but I don't, so instead "stand outside and watch the thieves". Took about 20 seconds before some bloke sprints past me down the High Street holding armfuls of clothes with Security guards, not police obviously, trying to keep up.
Turkish Posted 7 hours ago Posted 7 hours ago People from Southampton dont mention it enough. You can guarantee that a scouser particularly as well as Mancs, Londoners, Geordies will tell you where they are from without you asking, within minutes of meeting them by Jack Stephensing the name of their hometown into conversations. Getting into a conversation with them whilst on holiday can be particularly irritating as you cant escape them.

Blend in the old walls, the old town with new parts and make the most of the waterfront. It's sad to think what might have been and look at what it is now.
