Has it ever been done where an entire team has been sold/released at the end of a season, and a completely new squad starts the next season?

We seem to have a losing/don't care mentality in every player that we currently have, and if we bring in a few new players they seem great for a couple of games and then their form nosedives. Maybe the solution to changing the culture is a completely clean slate.

Has it ever been done? Could it work? I would imagine it would take a while to settle and learn to play with new team mates, but it can't be as bad as our current lack of cohesion?

I’m really scratching my head trying to think of a single player that statement applies to. Pretty much the entire team has been substandard and out of their depth since the season started. Ramsdale and Fernandes have been fairly consistently the only two who look like they belong in the PL, without looking anything special.

As for signing an entirely new team, there’s no need for such dramatics and it isn’t going to happen. These players will be far more at home in the Championship and results are going to reflect that.

I would lose no sleep whatsoever if a totally different eleven started the first game of next season. Done with the lot of them, the only two I would want to keep will go anyway so that’s irrelevant.

The reality is we will be stuck with a load of shite cos nobody in their right minds will want to buy most of this crap…..unless RM gets a job and comes in for all his mates and his amazing human being of a captain.

New goalkeeper

New RB - Edwards/Wood* - New CB** - New LB

Charles - Downes

New RM/Armstrong*** - New AM - New LW

New ST

Think that's the reset we need this summer with next season in mind and some long-term signings needed. Obviously, KWP, Ramsdale, Dibling and Fernandes will be off, so that leaves the goalkeeper, right-back, wing, and attacking midfield options free and then the other positions just need strengthening if we want to be competitive if we come back up in the near future. I know Downes has also let himself down in recent months, but you'd hope in the Championship he could regain his form under a good manager. Him and Charles shielding the back line in the Championship is serviceable with priorities elsewhere.

*One of Edwards, or Wood will do, but I wouldn't be starting both of them. I think they need an actual leader next to them like we had with Fonte and someone who can be quite dominant at the back again like with Van Dijk. I don't think either Wood or Edwards are the dominant force we need back there.

** I know Bednarek is good in the Championship, but I think it's just his time to move on. He should have been moved on last summer, as he's proven he's another one of those who struggles at this level and I want to see someone more physical in his place. Perhaps also a threat from attacking set-pieces, which Bednarek is not.

*** If Armstrong wants to stay, then he's serviceable, but at the same time I wouldn't be distraught if he left and we brought in a more traditional winger who can take their opponent on and create opportunities on their own. His goals would obviously need to be replaced in the striker position though, and given SR's track record there...

Sell: Stephens, Aribo, Sugawara, Fernandes, Sulemana, Harwood-Bellis, Archer, Taylor, Fraser, Ramsdale, Onuachu, Dibling, Bednarek, Brereton-Diaz, Bazunu and Bella-Kotchap. Some through choice, some because they won't want to play in the Championship again and some through attitude and the noises coming out in the last few months. And while last season was good, a lot of these names have also given us two horrendous seasons out of the last three. Hopefully Ankersen's little transfer club will help us shift a lot of names off the books.

In a Saints context, you could argue 09/10. After we’d sold Dyer, Surman and McGoldrick to stay afloat before Markus was confirmed, and ton of players like Skacel waived their final year, the only senior players remaining I can recall were Paul Wotton, Kelvin, a 37 year old Chris Perry, Saganowski, and a very injured Lee Holmes. Lallana and Morgan were somewhere inbetween youngsters and Senior, although clearly good players in the making. A smattering of youngsters - Lloyd James, Joseph Mills, Matthew Paterson and that was about it. Thomson as well. TBH most if not all would have been nowhere near a Championship first team but for Lowe’s legacy which Wilde made worse.

We brought in that summer Jaidi, Harding, Hammond, Connolly, Barnard, Lambert, Waigo, Antonio on loan just off the top of my head. Puncheon and Fonte came along later in the season.

There may have been teams who have gone into financial meltdown, who have had to build practically from scratch.

"They only had 2 players on their books," sort of thing.

Sturrock at Southend IIRC

Keep:

Bazunu,  Edwards, Charles, Fernandes, Edozie, Manning, Archer,  ( possibly Onuachu )

Recall Amo,

Buy:  Two centre backs, no nonsense tough tackling with height and presence.

Def Mid: destroyer Romeu type

Wingers:  two pacy prospects

Striker: Someone who can finish

Sell the rest

Agree with much of that, but definitely not the first name staying. Not bothered about Archer staying either.

Unless there's a blind/deaf and dumb football team out there we're probably going to have problems selling players who are battling to beat Derby's record.

The club has insurance on players as assets right? So if they get career threatening injuries, or have a freak of fatal accident we get a pay out?

Just saying...

Bazunu, Manning and Archer can all be shown the door.

Amo isn't coming back. Strasbourg have an obligation to buy.

This is the truth of the matter. With few exceptions these players have consistently proved they are not cut out to play in the Premier League.

There’s a few of them I would argue that have consistently proved they’re not cut out to play at the top of the Championship in a manner that befits a team with aspirations to play in the Premier league.

Palace had a major clear out a few years ago (mostly by running down contracts) and have gone from perennial strugglers to a decent side.

We need to do something similar - we have a squad of proven failures and weak minded players.
