Weston Super Saint Posted March 22 Posted March 22 I've had a (very) brief look at heat pumps as my boiler is getting on for 10 years old now, so will probably start failing soon. When I replaced it, pretty much like for like, it cost me about £1600 all in. I've been trying to find out how much a heat pump would cost but there doesn't seem anywhere that's willing to put a figure on it! The government subsidy of £7500 has been extended to March 2028 so there's plenty of time left to take advantage of that. Does anyone know how much these things cost? Every website just wants to arrange a visit for some sleazy salesperson to come round and talk bollocks for a couple of hours before plucking a figure out of the air - I'd like to know what a 'reasonable' cost is likely to be before I suffer one of these tools in the house, so I can tell them where to go when they come up with a mickey mouse figure. Likewise, anyone got one? Are they any good, do they live up to the hype? Any issues? Plenty of room in the garden for an air source pump for the house and we already have a hot water tank so it seems a pretty straightforward swap!
badgerx16 Posted March 22 Posted March 22 (edited) This is from the British Gas site; The starting price for heat pump installation with British Gas is £7,999 – or £499 after the £7,500 government grant is added. However, many homes do need extra work to get the best performance from a heat pump. After the £7,500 government grant, the average price for our customers in 2023 was £5,690. ..........,.......... We have one and love it. We have no gas supply to our house, and previously had storage heaters, an immersion heater if we wanted a bath, and a wood burning stove for the living room, ( which replaced an old coal fire and back boiler ). When the heat pump was installed we also replaced the immersion tank and had new central heating radiators installed in every room, so the pump is now giving us central heating all round and also 'instant' hot water. Obviously this cost far more than simply putting in the heat pump. My wife says it is the best thing we have ever done. The most important things to consider are how the pump would integrate into existing heating and plumbing systems, and how well insulated your house is. Also, get at least two or three estimates - there are reports of installed pumps being under sized for the intended installation. Edited March 22 by badgerx16 1

Current bolier just heats water in the immersion tank (which is big enough for our needs) and heats the radiators as needed. The house is very well insulated, so it should be a case of taking out the boiler and connecting everything to the heat pump. Would also mean I can take out the gas hob (oven is electric anyway), so can do away with the gas supply completely...
