The hammerings as a fan I've had to endure

Supporting Saints since the late 1960's,  I feel our club has suffered the humiliation of more massive defeats than any other.

It seems to be in our DNA.

The first I remember is Everton away 8-0 circa 1970, my brother came back from his paperround (days before any news , only got it from the World of Sport ITV or Grandstand BBC) and he asked me what was the score as it was half time and I told him it was 5-0 he didnt believe me lol

Same season 7-0 Leeds away (always beng played as was on MotD)

Ipswich was a 7-1

Charlton  7 (it may have been 6)

Watford 7-0

Liverpool was it 7-1

and of course the 2, 9-0 games.

Im sure there are more that my mind has tried to blank out !!

This is the only way you could find the scores in the 'old days' we would sit expectantly waiting for our score to come in...

This is what we had in the day

Luton 7-0 under Nicholl on the plastic, and 6-1 there later. 7-1 Everton with us 5-0 down after 30 minutes and Heaney as an emergency LB v peak Kanchelskis. Hmmm. 5-0 Newcastle on Sky under Jones, 2-0 down in 3 minutes. Last season Sunderland and Leicester away were as bad as any hammerings. This season Spurs and Chelsea home could have been double figures easily, serious contenders for worst ever Saints performances.

I’ve seen us give out a few as well - Sunderland 8-0, Villa 5-0 and 6-1, Man U famously 6-3, Spurs 4-0. Newcastle home back to back. And we ran riot in League One and Champ at times - Hudds twice, Oldham away 0-6, Derby, Swansea last season.

We stuck 8 past Cov at the Dell early 80s, midweek game if I remember correctly, won 8-2.

Actually maybe confusing that with the midweek 5-5 game a couple of years earlier as I can also remember news filtering through that evening of, I think, HMS Sheffield that had been struck and sunk in the Falklands.

A consistent mistake, this one. The kit change wasn’t the 6-3 scoreline.  It was 3-1, the year before, 3-0 up at half time when they made the change.

What a team we had with Pelle, Tadic and Mane etc! After sustaining our rise through the leagues to build that team under such a good management team, it really was the best of days. What a complete shitshow SR have built by contrast.

A lot of people get mixed up with this one. Utd lost 3-1 in April 96 , that was the game they changed shirts at half time but it was the following season in October when we beat them 6-3 (and I think Roy Keane got sent off in that game)   Worth remembering those stats, I've won a few quid in bets about those results !!! 😀

The 6-1 home loss in the league cup against Liverpool was a tough one to take. Under Koeman and we had a great team but Steven Caulker had a mare Steklenburg in goal even worse, I think Liverpool scored with every shot on target and had to endure the pundit going on about how brilliant they were. When in truth they weren’t that great just one of those days when everything they hit went in

Not a massive scoreline admittedly, but the 3 nil up at halftime against Tranmere, lose 4-3 was fcking repulsive.  That took a few days to get over if i remember.

Immune to the beatings now.  And the sadest thing is no-one else really mentions it either - media, or mates etc. Just expected!

Yep, not quite as embarrassing but Leeds at St Mary's was another similar capitulation and score line.

One more for the collection, 30 years ago at the Dell, 2-up against Spurs in the FA Cup at halftime, up-step Ronny-fookin-Rosenthal. Lost 2-6.

You should ask my Mrs about the hammerings she's had to endure.

Came here to type this.

Although Mrs S tells me she could write a book on consistent underperformance.

I was thinking something similar yesterday and wondered if a ‘Our Greatest FA Cup defeats’ thread was warranted. Decided against it as things are depressing enough already.

So I’ll dump it in here. Although the Highbury S/F defeat in 1984 was the bitterest defeat the most humiliating I recall are:

3)Wrexham at home 1974. We thought we were comfortably mid-table at the time but carried on the slump for the rest of the season.

2)Grimsby 2022 - shocking, though like now we knew we were shit

1) Tranmere - we actually had a good team at the time.

The moral of all this - yesterday’s result doesn’t even register on the scale. That’s how far we’ve fallen, losing at home to a team in a division below isn’t a surprise, barely a disappointment, and we’re used to losing.

Barnsley 1985 with a very good team was a bitter one.

Yes, had forgotten that.

Played on a Monday night for some reason so it had been quite an effort to get to ( I was in Scotland at the time).

Tranmere defeat is the closest I've come to wrapping a bar stool round someone's head.

I watched it when I was at uni in our halls bar and this bellend Spurs fan was doing my head in. Told him to STFU or I was going to lamp him and I guess he believed me! I was visibly extremely angry.

Also, I believe that was Imants Bleidelis' only appearance?

I think the 8-2 was played the Saturday after the FA Cup SF at Highbury in 1984.

Yes they did. Another memorable thing was Frank Worthington scored one of the others. His goal brought the house down with people going berserk for his goal as he’d been on a goal drought for a few months but had contributed a lot to our form and had become a bit of a folk hero ( Frankie Goes To Wembley t-shirts at the time)

That was Worthington’s last goal for us I recall , and also I think his last appearance. Think he was mysteriously  dropped the next week at Stoke ( later rumoured due to his off the field discipline and antics)

Apart from the others mentioned, being 2 up v Spurs at HT in the FA cup mid 90's. Then Ronny Rosenthal decided to find his shooting boots and we lose 6-2 after ET.

9 3 Wolves in 1965 was a fantastic performance
