Andrew Watson Posted February 4 Posted February 4 I watched the QPR game on Sky tonight and Ronnie Edwards had another good game at the back. A friend of mine a big QPR fan, told me that he is very popular with their fans. I hope that the management here give him a chance to shine for us the championship next year and do not decide to sell him off for a pittance. 7
Football Special Posted February 4 Posted February 4 Qpr fans rate him highly and hope he can be signed permanently , seems could be a good option next season if we can fit him into side
AlexLaw76 Posted February 5 Posted February 5 Forgot he even signed for us. we will probably sell him in the summer, under the statue ownership of Sport Republic
Pierre2 Posted February 5 Posted February 5 Thought he looked pretty decent in the pre-season game against Lazio 1
steve green Posted February 5 Posted February 5 I loved this comment - "He was brilliant. No idea how he wasn't getting more game time at Saints with how terrible they've been. Although Martin probably wasn't used to seeing defenders pass forward and run with the ball " 14 1
SaintNewForest Posted February 5 Posted February 5 We'll probably sell him in the summer for a nice profit.
goodymatt Posted February 5 Posted February 5 It’s encouraging to see Edwards and Charles get rave reviews at mid table championship teams. You’d hope surrounded by our better players and having a full season playing at that level (appreciate Edwards has also played there before with Peterborough), that they will be involved with us next season. Both still have potential to realise and could become PL players. I would be disappointed to sell either. 8
saintant Posted February 5 Posted February 5 Millwall fans absolutely raving about him both as a solid defender and the way he carries the ball forward so effortlessly - something that would not have fitted into RMs death by a thousand passes mantra. Most confess to being amazed that he couldn't command a regular starting spot in our useless defence and they have a point. Let's hope he comes back and is a first choice next season. 3
Saint Fan CaM Posted February 5 Posted February 5 It’s interesting to see so many players do better once they’ve left us, but maybe that’s because they’ve found ‘their level’? 2

spyinthesky Posted February 5 Posted February 5 I think the performances of Edwards, Charles and many of our players last season really shows up the increasingly wide standards of the Prem versus the Championship. 6

Absolutely this. Next season the manager will plenty of choice. We have CBs coming out of our ears: Stephens, Bednarek, THB, Wood, Edwards, ABK, Sanda, Taylor, Bree...Aribo! 1

Chez Posted February 5 Posted February 5 (edited) 1 hour ago, skintsaint said: Thought he wanted out this summer? Yeah that's what the Daily Mail suggested. But we'll see. If Besiktas is the suitor, as rumoured, then expect a very low bid and maybe even an expectation that we give him a big leaving bonus to make up for any shortfall in wages. Juric seems to like him, so not sure he will be pushing him out the door. There was talk that his wage was really high and it wasn't cut on relegation - not sure if either are true - but if the rumoured £70k a week is accurate, then Besiktas aren't matching that. Aribo isn't going to leave in the summer to earn less money. He may as well sit tight and leave the year after. Edited February 5 by Chez 2
Andrew Watson Posted February 5 Author Posted February 5 I just hope Juric is following his progress at QPR and that of Charles also. I love the comments that Edwards has found his level, because the championship is where most of our players belong.

ErwinK1961 Posted February 5 Posted February 5 Surely this was the whole purpose of the loan, for him to get regular game time and play well, ahead of next season. Job well done so far. 1

That'll be good enough for the Championship plus Bednarek as 3rd centre back, Welington at left back (he looks a real prospect) and Bree/Sugawara at right back (assuming KWP goes).

Hope you’re right but seems a bit premature to make this claim after one match v a piss poor Ipswich 1
Badger Posted February 5 Posted February 5 Had hoped for Edwards to feature this season. From everything I’d read I was quite optimistic about him. Hope he returns to fulfill the potential with us next season 2

S-Clarke Posted February 5 Posted February 5 He's a good player, I was pleased when we signed him as IMO he's a future England international. He should have had more game time, I mean if Bree can play at the back for us in the PL then I'm sure Edwards can deal with it. We'll enjoy watching him next season I think, it'll be interesting to see who partners him. He's certainly the sort of player who can grow with a club and become a PL player, so we need to make sure we keep those sorts. 4
redkeith Posted February 6 Posted February 6 I watched some of his debut against Leicester and his passing was amazing , long accurate and positive. Hard to judge his defending in that game as he had only been there for a few days and Leicester were having one of those days where we every breakaway resulted in a goal.

Pleased for those lads as their moves to us hadn't gone well. Credit to the club though for sorting decent loans that benefits all concerned, not least us next season. 2

Sheffield United look a good bet to go up so Diaz certainly could, every chance QPR or Sheffield Wednesday could come up via the play offs so could even lose two of them.

Diaz the most likely - QPR and Weds could make the play offs but I think they’ll just be short. Fair play to all of them and hope Diaz goes get a move back there if they go up as got the short end of the straw with Martin trying to use him wide in a u-shaped formation. Nope, I didn’t understand it either! 1

I think that when Edwards was signed the talk at the time was that he wouldn't be in contention for the first team this season. I think the most surprising thing as he didn't go out on loan in August. So it's pretty clear he is coming back, and no reason to think the same about Charles next season too. It's strange, when we loan players in there's a lot of moaning about developing other teams players and how they will go back to their parent club never to return and no benefit to us whats the point. But if we loan a player out there's panic that they will never come back to us and thats it they're gone forever we've lost another good one whats the point. 3

I know what you mean, but I think peoples opinions are a little skewed by the Tella situation. There will be the odd occasion when that happens, but I think generally when a PL club loans out players and they do well at a lower level, it's to the benefit of the then PL club rather than anyone else. I can't imagine a situation where Edwards isn't starting for us next season, he's got a big contract and the loan has been perfect for him this year - the situation where it benefits ourselves, QPR and the player. For me, loans in and out are vital, and I have no issue with us using another clubs player for a brief period. Edwards arguably should have gone on loan earlier, but half a season playing regularly for a team at the right end of the championship is superb for him and us. Ditto Charles, and Diaz will have regained some confidence from his loan too. 3
Sidney Fudpucker the 3rd Posted February 15 Posted February 15 Just spoken to a client in work who is a QPR fan. He was obviously happy with their result last night. I asked about Edwards. His response.... "What a player. Wouldn't be surprised if he gets player of the season. Apparently he has said he wants a permanent move and doesn't want to go back to Saints." Brilliant. :-/ 1
