Dusic Posted January 28 Posted January 28 As per title: Draper was a disappointing signing, quite hyped when he joined after a good career at Villa but was too often injured for us and didnt justify the £1.5m outlay. Prutton was vastly overrated, and a major disappointment after being considered as something of a coup when he signed from Forest as Eng U21 skipper. Haunting miss vs WBA and total headloss vs Arsenal probably the two highlights of his stay, leaving aside the Prutts & Beatts show from back when our radio station was the envy of English football. At a push? Prutton, just. Awful first touch but better availability than Draper (when not suspended).
Turkish Posted January 28 Posted January 28 This is a pretty poor question. Mark Draper had already peaked, he was 30 when we signed him been at Villa for years. Prutton was England U21 captain and considered to be a great prospect when we signed him. I see David Prutton quite regularly, he goes to the same gym and lives in the village next to ours. Nice fella. 1

Nice fella. Draper was an excellent player but had a long-term knee issue, retired within 18 months IIRC. Did a decent job for a very modest fee in Hoddle’s side but not at his Villa pomp. Prutton I was excited about signing, WGS made a rare mistake trying to turn into a DMC when he was a clear box to box CM. Showed that by destroying Liverpool who won the ECL that year but the Arsenal incident ruined his career. Good lad, likes the club and always popular with our fans. 1

Yeah he was class at Leicester and in the early days at Villa. Made the England squad a few times IIRC but don’t think he ever got a cap. I felt the same about Prutton, he ended up being shunted out to the left a lot under redknapp so never really saw the best of him and he never reached his potential. I’ve seen Pruttons kid in a Saints shirt a few times, looking at his age would assume he was born in Southampton when David played for us Edited January 28 by Turkish 1
Matty's Caddy Posted January 28 Posted January 28 Neither. Draper. Who knows, never played. Prutton. Huge cockwomble 1

If it’d been a few years later he would have done with the mass substitutions in friendlies.
Pamplemousse Posted January 28 Posted January 28 Prutton's wife is the daughter of a former Saints player as well
Andrew Watson Posted January 28 Posted January 28 Could have done with his father in law playing for us now, he was a very decent, combative midfielder in his prime in the early seventies.

rooney Posted January 29 Posted January 29 As others have said, Prutton was an exciting signing because of his pedigree. He had some very good games for us at first but did not develop as he should. Draper was a quality player but always seemed injured so on balance ,Prutton for me.
Tommy Mulgrew Posted January 29 Posted January 29 To put Benji and others out of their misery: David Prutton married Jenny O’Neil, daughter of Brian O’Niel, who played in midfield for Saints in the 1970s. https://www.saintsplayers.co.uk/player/brian-oneil/ We need someone like Brian right now; he would certainly liven up our games this season - at least until he gets sent off. Interesting story in that article that he never owned a pair of boots!
Midfield_General Posted January 31 Posted January 31 (edited) I thought I saw the legendary former captain of Bayern Munich’s treble winning side out the other day. He was done up to the nines, but in a style suited to a much younger person. Closer inspection revealed that it wasn’t him at all, it was actually a volatile former Saints and Forest midfielder in disguise. Turns out it was Prutton, dressed as Lahm. Where’s that head-in-hands icon when you need it? 1
Jeremy Corbyn Posted January 31 Posted January 31 (edited) Prutton was brilliant under Redknapp until the Arsenal incident. That Liverpool game him and Crouch were incredible and I thought we'd be fine. Draper was a waste of space. Silly comparison. Edited February 1 by Jeremy Corbyn

Holmes_and_Watson Posted February 1 Posted February 1 Peak Draper over peak Prutton. Like others, I recall Prutton's promise, not being played all the time in his best position and then checking out with his suspension. Draper not fit, but probably still gets the nod as the player I'd depend on, if he was.
Tommy Mulgrew Posted February 1 Posted February 1 Nooooo! Brian O’Neil every time. 😃 (See Wednesday 5.37p.m., above.)

We were very good that day. Just checked and that was 20 years ago! Can’t remember much of Draper at Saints at all but due to his career before he got to us, then he’s clearly a better player. Prutton was better at Saints though.
Cabrone Posted February 1 Posted February 1 If it's a choice between them at their peak then it's Draper all day long. If its Saints Draper vs Saints Prutton then Prutton gets the nod, only because Saints Draper was pretty anonymous.
