To try to counter this we went 5 at the back to give us that extra player to defend with as we would have had no chance playing a 4, but has meant that our midfield has been overrun. At least people are now seeing that our defence being utter shite is not Manager dependent as Juric is struggling with the quality of players we have. One of our biggest problems now is the opposition has the ball too much and can cut through our poor defence time after time. We need to keep possession better to keep it away from the opposition. Keep possession, or defend better? And welcome back 😉

Farmer Saint Posted Tuesday at 09:14 Posted Tuesday at 09:14 (edited) 2 out of 2 there Weston. Look, I gave you a month to detox from me, to try to get me out of your head, but it seems like you just can't get over me. Edited Tuesday at 09:18 by Farmer Saint 1

We had 52.7% possession against Newcastle. 2

Unfortunately they’re not good enough to keep possession either. All three goals on Saturday plus some dangerous chances came form fast incisive runs through our defence. Having more possession wouldn’t have stopped those but it would have stultified our attack.

True - defence is just not good enough, and I don't think ever will be. You only have to look at the amount of goals we shipped last year in the Championship.

Of course, Martin takes most of the responsibility for that and so far I haven’t seen much improvement under Duric. Not having a settled team doesn’t help either. Every game I see players getting in each other’s way or both going for the same ball.

Bednarek and Stephens are not PL defenders, and KWP is poor defensively and they have been in our defence for too long. 1

Either way, they're shit and not PL standard defensively in any of our seasons, and is one of the main reasons we've been so poor. 1
saintant Posted Tuesday at 13:44 Posted Tuesday at 13:44 3 hours ago, Farmer Saint said: Yeah, not enough was it? Agree but, traditionally and certainly prior to the failed vanity project, we have generally done better when we are set up and play in a way that gives our opponents more possession. We concede so many goals when the opposition launches a fast break on us after turning over possession. Maybe less is more as they say. 1

Winning two games would be a minor miracle the way we are playing at the moment. It’s possible but highly unlikely, it’s seems we are now in the position everybody knows we are down and trying to get the motivation and confidence from the team will be a hard task . we may get a fluky draw or a fluky win but where they may come from is anyone’s guess and if we got both that still only gives us 10 points .
Tommy Mulgrew Posted Tuesday at 17:04 Posted Tuesday at 17:04 IMO, possession is not the answer; our experience with Martin showed us that. What we need is two proper defensive midfielders of Premier League standard in front of a back four. The trouble is we do not have those players. Of those available in our squad, LU and FD are probably the best we can do but one is too inexperienced at this level and the other is having a bad season. Aribo has deputised to the best of his ability but does not have the right skills. Cpn. Jack is definitely not the answer. Neither is Manning. Smallbone is totally the wrong type of player. We are stuffed as far as I can see unless we get two DMs in; and that will not happen. So, onwards and downwards it is, then. 😥 1
east-stand-nic Posted yesterday at 08:08 Posted yesterday at 08:08 I think we will continue to see small improvements under Juric as the squad gets fitter and he learns his best selections. Perhaps within the next 3 weeks. So, let's have a go at predicting this.....i can see 7 draws in there at best, and maybe one or two of them could be wins. I think we will end up on 13-14 points. Possible Draws - Pts Expected Losses - Pts Ipswich 0 Bournemouth 0 Brighton 0 Chelsea 0 Wolves 1 Liverpool 0 Palace 1 Spurs 1 Villa 0 Man City 0 W Ham 1 Arsenal 0 Fulham 1 Leicester 1 Everton 1
goodymatt Posted yesterday at 08:56 Posted yesterday at 08:56 We seem to have Everton’s number so far this season but I can’t see us getting anything at the lest ever game at Goodison, as much as I’d love to piss on their parade. We did manage to spoil City’s Maine Road farewell, which was fun living up near Manchester. 1

They have had our number in recent times, but I wouldn't say they have been miles better. 1

I think we might pick up another couple of points but we won't make it to double figures. We can put it right next to Shane Long's quickest goal scored and Sadio Mane's fastest hat trick. the trifecta!
