At this level, yes.

Does lots of things right till he gets anywhere near goal.... Sounds like virtually all are strikers

Because it does not particularly suit the style of faster paced football played here.

Slow Martinball was disastrous. Juric's football is a lot quicker. We just lack PL quality in many areas whatever formation or style of play we use.

That is a completely separate point, I do not disagree

however, I hope we move to a manager who does not favour 3 at the back.

So did Martin just get lucky with the six points he did get? We have had better performances under juric but come away with nothing points wise

People don't  understand that,  especially that comment from mlg, shows he's no clue

Juric's style is faster, significantly faster than Martin's. We are a lost cause whatever we do with this squad. That doesn't mean three at the back is a bad idea.

Saints player would have fucking walked for what Joelinton just did.

It was disgraceful. Thats what happens when you are in our position, you get not and no one cares

I take it as a plus that Saints didn't totally capitulate. Some fight there but I want to see more balls played into the penalty area once we reach the attacking third.

Absolutely. Feels like because we're cannon fodder, you can do what you fucking please to us.

Not purely Saints - "big" clubs are needed to protect the PL brand.

No one is disputing that.
however, in the summer I hope we ditch Juric if he is wedded to this system

How many times have we had PGMOL quote high bar and screw us. Where was that high bar for the pen? You can even see Isak move his foot a quick step to the side before diving over. They watched it so many times that it can’t be a clear and obvious error. Had to stick with on field decision. Unsurprisingly heads drop and it’s a 2nd goal in quick succession. Mentality is so fragile.

Made me think of the semedo one at wolves where our attacking player was deemed to foul semedo. Both ridiculous decisions and there is just no consistency, barring one, the decisions going against us!

Story of the game so far. On top, one up  and with some wind in our sails. Officials didn’t like that so VAR gave a soft pen and the Ref didn’t have the balls to stick with his own decision. Newcastle score the pen, our heads drop and our defence opens up like a flower for them to score again. 1-2.

Too many sub-standard players across the team to get back into this. It’ll end 1-4 or possibly 1-5.

Why wouldn't it work in the Championship given we'd have a higher quality of player vs the majority of opponents? Or if we return to the PL and if we finally sort out our recruitment under the potentially soon-to-arrive Johannes Spors overseeing it?

We couldn’t make a decent midfield of any more than 3 players, that’s pushing it.

We can't field a decent midfield 3 despite signing 3 midfielders in the summer (Downes, Lallana, Uguchukwu) whilst deciding to sell Alcaraz and we can't field a decent back 3 despite signing 3 centre halfs in the summer (THB, Wood, Edwards).

Sport Republic OUT!

I get frustrated when decisions go against us or teams turn our lead over with ease.

Then I remember we're on our way back to the Championship regardless, so my frustration disappears into ambivalence pretty sharpish.

Joelinton seems to have diplomatic immunity or something . Should have been sent off last week Vs Bournemouth too

For the reasons I gave (English paced game)

anyhow, I can’t be arsed having a ding dong with you about it, so I will leave it there

The idea of using VAR isn't the issue, it is the people using it. If the Premier League hired the best officials from around the world then VAR would be significantly better. Instead, they largely stick to English referees.

But you can't separate the one from the other. Therefore VAR is a shit idea.

Agreed. At least nothing hurts anymore.

At the game and it had a cracking atmosphere particularly after we scored. The VAR got involved which took absolutely forever and it literally sucked every drop of colour out of the game. Horrendous system which the Norwegians have got wise to. Add in a ref who might be having a free Saudi holiday off the back of this and the game at this level feels rotten. Roll on next year.

Juric uses a fast paced style and will have a higher quality of player in his midfield next season in the Championship relative to the majority of opponents compared to our struggles this season. So why wouldn't it work?

Would the PL ever get rid? It's a system that's fairly easy to rig in favour of bigger clubs, so I guess not...?

You can separate them... if you hired the best refs from around the world rather than limiting yourself to largely just English ones. Opening up the market for the best refs improves the use of VAR, in the same way the influx of foreign players into the PL significantly increased the quality level of the players in the league.

Sort of, except they are a bunch of thugs, whereas Howe looks soft as shite.

Greeting from St.Mary's. My first match of the Juric era. Not a great performance but at least it feels like I'm watching a game of football compared to a game of chess under the previous regime.

Big Les and Fernandes the standout players for us.

Newcastle far more threatening in the final third than us (#statingtheobvious) but the ref is giving us absolutely nothing. Their defenders are consistently fouling Tall Paul but not a jot from the referee. Indeed, I think their second goal emanated from such an incident if I remember correctly (?)

And as for the VAR decision, I'm right behind the goal where it happened and didn't look like a penalty in real to me. Once again, how can it take them so long to overturn the original decision given it must have been a "clear and obvious error"...? The ensuing Northam chant of "Premier League, corrupt as f***" was spot on.

Still think we could sneak a result here but probably wishful thinking!

Do you know of any league in the world that does not use refs from their own nation?

No, but is that a compelling reason not to do it? It should be on merit, not nationality! The PL wants the best players from around the world, so why not the best officials hired from around the world?
