Really hope Bednarek goes at the end of this season, it feels like I’ve been watching him throw his hands up, blaming someone else for his errors weekly for the last 7-8 years.

True enough.  Even though he scored a goal and had a headed effort cleared off the line, he’s one of several “old hands” who’ve been in a comfortably stale place at Saints for too long, with a game changing clanger never far away.  He needs (and we need) a fresh start elsewhere.    Put Bree, Armstrong, McCarthy, Smallbone and Fraser in that category too - although Armstrong obviously offers a lot for next season in the Championship… never again in the Prem.

The fight and intensity in the second half restored a lot of pride and hope in the Club.  Ugochuku, Fernandes, KWP, Airibo, Onuachu and Sulemana all lifted the standards to a level Juric will be happy with.   That’s what the rest of this season is now about.

I fear he’s one of those who’ll just stick around forever, as an accepted part of the furniture. Not only that, in a couple of years he’ll get a testimonial and the club will be actively celebrating an astonishingly substandard player being a regular fixture for over a decade.

Ab - So - Bloody - Lutely..

Other than a dozen or so half decent games towards the end of 19/20 season and during 20/21 he's been a disaster looking for somewhere to happen IMHO.  I was happy when he was loaned out to Villa and hoped that we'd seen the back of him.  Disappointed that he was recalled and then ably assisted our relegation.

I'm also surprised that we felt the need to give him a contract extension in Sept/24 for 3 years...

Funny how, with new coaches, we suddenly look much more dangerous from corners. We've scored twice from them in our last two games plus Bednarek had his late header cleared off the line. What did RM and his coaches do on the training ground? I think it must have been a couple of quick sprints, a jumpers for goalposts kick about for ten minutes then a collective laugh and a joke - that's on the few days they actually went in.

I'm convinced the reason long range shots and goals from corners are dying out is because this new breed of uber possession managers want teams to ONLY train playing the short pass. If someone shoots from distance in training I can imagine them getting called out on it and told to look for other options instead of giving the ball away.

Dan Fox was a great fullback in the Championship. Sugawara will be brilliant and will be a stronger player when we come back up.

We have been spoilt with the likes of KWP and Bertrand in fullbacks that are good at both ends of the pitch. Those are rare, especially in our budget range.

In his defence he was clearly indicating to Downes that a better pass was on but for whatever reason he was ignored and put under pressure - Downes has not been the same player since RM left so better to leave him out if his heart is not in it.

Terrible, his awareness of what is going on around him is some of the worst I’ve ever seen.

Posted (edited)

Thought much the same as everyone else at the match yesterday who has posted their thoughts. First half was atrocious. Armstrong did nothing, Downes was a liability and our lack of tackling as their players ran at our defence allowed them to get into decent shooting positions. For the 2nd, thought Bedders was fouled at the game but since seeing the highlights, ref got that one right. Thought Ramsdale was at fault for the 3rd at the game but was a bit harsh after watching it back, though he really got lucky with the 4th non-goal.

We looked so much better with Downes off. Ugo took control of the match and played a blinder. Kept it tight at the back with some great defensive work but also drove up the pitch to help in attack. This freed Aribo up a little more and he grew into the game. Great for Tall P to score, really good header, thought he added a dimension when he came on, along with Sully; pace and height/strength on the pitch at the same time. Fernandes was good but he needs to be a little more controlled and not lose his rag when the whistle goes....though the ref was terrible yesterday. Think Archer is not being given the right tools to do a job for us. Think putting him alongside Armstrong is limiting what he is able to do and is unfair as I think he has a lot more about him and with the right service could be a decent player for us.

I was surprised at how much time wasting went on by the Forest players. So much time taken for throw ins (which we're so guilty of as well), lining up free kicks and rolling around on the floor injured for ages. Glad it all got added up to 12 minutes and would've been very happy to see us equalise and the time wasting blow up in their faces. Exciting 2nd half but still another check in the 'plucky loss' column. Surely we must be able to grind out a win soon!

You mean Like on Sunday when brain dead Downes made an impossible to reach back pass to Jan who was marked by two Forest players one of whom thicko Wood clearly body checked him to prevent him getting anywhere near the ball even though he tried?

How in hell's name can you blame Jan for that.

I think he was referring to Jan moving out of the defensive line to apply pressure, then running back to get in line in the box and completely missing a header that was then headed in by Wood.

Because he’s also to blame, I’m not just calling him out for yesterday, he’s indicative of how we’ve fallen, mistake after mistake, year after year, even slagged us off when he popped off for a bit but he’s still here and now he’s bloody captain. He needs to be shipped out.

Signs that Juric is slowly turning them around - at least in the 2nd half.

Top marks to the support who made their way up yesterday. Grey, cold, post Xmas Sunday against an in form team in a season where we have won once.

Well done all those who made the effort.

So frustrating that we can go from looking a half decent side to an absolute car crash within a few minutes.... This team has deep rooted mentality and fitness issues... It will take some time to cure the rot... Yes results haven't improved under juric but I still think he could be decent given time and the right players... I can see that his football will be better long term than Martin's... What's the consensus people happy for juric to stay in the championship?

As a Premier League defender he is indeed shite. As a wing back or maybe a winger in the championship though he may be able to do a job. Just as Danny Fox was turd at the back but great going forward.

I know its heresy to say this but KWP has been poor in a few goals in the last 2 games. He didnt close Aina down and also let Amad free

It’s possibly been mentioned in the previous pages, I haven’t looked, Downes was so lucky on two occasions to avoid a Red Card. Two ugly incidents. Deserved a Red in both.

Worst was their right back in second half - went down on the half way line & we could his scream in the away end.  I thought he must have busted his leg after that reaction - 1 minute later running down the line ... pathetic!

No you are not, it most certainly was Bree, but the situation Bree and then Bednarek found themselves in was created by Downes. All three should take some blame for that goal.

As much as I like KWP, especially when he is playing well, he looks short of a yard of pace. Not sure if it's down to tiredness, he has lost half a yard or never had it. There was a flat out race between him and Williams down the right in the second half and he was well beaten. He couldn't keep up with Ahmed the other night too. He's been a brilliant servant for us and was fantastic last season in the championship, but he is not beyond any criticism.

Yes but are they finally going to learn their lesson that the same players that can get promotion from the championship arent good enough for the premier league are they going to have the strength needed to ditch these players after promotion??? Or continue the same disasterrous cycle?

The touch tight defending every single game is baffling

Posted

The first half (and the Ramsdale error "goal") were all things that has me shaking my head game after game.

The stand off defending, backing off constantly allowing for opponents to get 40-60 yards upfield and not closing down crosses have been a staple of this slump period of the last few years. Even last season was the same. It drives me mental.

The Juric results (Brentford aside) feel like one of those streaks that teams go on in the PL. Bad runs of form where things could go either way. The problem is the wretched results prior to his appointment. I'm pleased we are playing more direct, not long but direct. To my eye anyway.

Said it after Brentford I think but I would ditch the 3CB's especially as Bree seems to be one of them now. Add another CM and go with a diamond and the split strikers as we have been. KWP right side, Manning the other with Onuachu/Archer and Kamaldeen up top. Basic sure, but I think we can at least be competitive enough to get the required points to beat the 11 point sword hanging over us.

I’ve no problem with Jan being in the squad next season. What was absolutely ludicrous was getting promoted and then signing two CBs who are actually worse than him. A bit like if we’d been promoted in 2012 with Fonte and Hooiveld, then signed Dan Seaborne as a PL ‘squad player’.

Our two "best" centre backs would be third/fourth choice at best for pretty much every other team in the league (bar maybe the other clubs in the relegation zone)
