A Knighthood has been seriously devalued over the years. I cannot really see many, if any reasons why a football player/coach/manager should get one. There are far more deserving of it that get totally missed or shunned.

Yep. Southgate already had an OBE. If getting to the Euro's final merited an award, then he could have been awarded a CBE.

what's he done to deserve a knighthood? London is a shit hole and getting worse every year.

Toby Young, Baroness Charlotte Owen, Sir Gavin Williamson, Sir Chris Grayling, Dame Priti Patel, Dame Andrea Jenkyns, Sir Michael Fabricant, Dame Therese Coffey, Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg - the bar has already been set ridiculously low so it's a stretch to be offended by any new names joining this list of political giants.

Unless of course you're the Daily Mail, then it's your job.

Slightly bias perhaps, but my idea of people deserving of a Gong (as I think they are often called) would be Mr. Benali. He has contributed things of real value. He has given up a lot of his personal life to help others. Perhaps it is not quite Sir Francis as yet, but people of this ilk should be the ones considered as knights.

I saw this list a while back also and honestly not sure if any of these people are deserving also. OK, there is an argument that they give up a lot of their personal time also, to give joy to others. But then they are lucky enough to have the talent to do so. Should you be rewarded so graciously when bestowed with such talents?

I don’t really care who gets one, System is so corrupt but those actively campaigning for one person not to receive his - I think I know their reason.

I think Khan is a cunt and I'd be happy to see him not get one. I think he's unprofessional, has presided over some absolutely terrible policies and in my view doesn't particularly like Britain very much. His race isn't relevant to that but as you say, the entire system is a joke particularly after Sir Jim so I won't lose any sleep over it.

I have to agree. I don't think he's done anything to warrant a knighthood.

He has been knighted for not winning the World Cup and not winning the Euros. Takes the shine off those who were knighted for 1966 somewhat doesn’t it? Would Alf had been given a sniff at an honour if he had lost the final? Of course not. It took years for many of the squad to actually get a winners medal too.  It seems that being a plucky loser gives you equal status now.

These things should be taken away from politics. If we are going to have an honours system it should operate separately from governments by a board with clear guidelines as to how they are granted, proper transparency and firm checks and balances to ensure that they aren’t bought.

Even Liz Truss got to hand out honours after her embarrassingly short time in office. Crazy.

Let's start with this: should a manager who took us to the euro final get something in the new years honours? Forget what it is, just should there be an honour?

Yet has been democratically elected by Londoners so not about what some individuals may think of his policies. See Gavin Williamson

This is clearly a breakthrough for you. Southgate is not a member of the far right yet you have something against him. Did you get as excitable for Bobby Robson demanding to see his winners medals?

I don't want to see him removed from office undemocratically, I just would rather he didn't get a knighthood because it cheapens it and he's upset a lot of people. I also wouldn't want Boris getting one for the same reasons.

He is white, straight and male though so it's not that revolutionary.

Why? Does history remember the runners up? Currently he holds the same honour as the only man in this country who has won a major honour with an England football team. Doesn’t seem right does it? He already has something. A runners up medal.

If we are desperate to honour Southgate for his services to football in this country but not actually winning anything, perhaps he should have received an MBE or something similar? Knighthoods should be for very special achievements only.

So that's a no.

He had an OBE already. If he was to get an award, it could only be a CBE or Knighthood. Personally, I think an honour was due, but I'm staggered that he bypassed a CBE and got a knighthood.

It’s certainly a no to a knighthood but then our honours system is littered with people who get that honour without achieving anything special.
