FarehamSaintJames Posted 20 December, 2024 Posted 20 December, 2024 (edited) It’s being reported he will sign a six month contract with us. A number of things stick out for me: The one thing I thought Sport Republic might do is go for Premier League experience. Nope apparently not. Seriously underwhelmed at this appointment. Overrated manager. Hasn’t done prolifically anywhere. His goals for and against are high. Are they also really going to back a six month manager in the transfer window as well? I highly doubt it. Anywhere to penny pinch from doing another transfer window fuck up. I’m guessing the agreement is work with the players you have. It’ll be interesting to see if the players buy in to his style and approach. Great move for IJ who will get a nice payday and walk away in six months time. Very confusing appointment. Not entirely convinced but I guess beggars can’t be choosers. 😂 Edited 20 December, 2024 by FarehamSaintJames 2 3 1

Dman Posted 20 December, 2024 Posted 20 December, 2024 Who did you want then - anyone with 'premier league experience'? Are you one of those Wallys who was on social media spouting "go and get Moyes or Potter".. neither of which wanted the job, clearly.
ally_uk Posted 20 December, 2024 Posted 20 December, 2024 Give the lad a chance.... He hasn't even been appointed yet. No need to act like a lemonade sandwich.... 🤣 1
SW5 SAINT Posted 20 December, 2024 Posted 20 December, 2024 (edited) Record in Italy appears quite impressive. Would appear to a substantial upgrade on Martin at any rate…maybe the Italian(Croatian) version of Potter or Moyes…..! Edited 20 December, 2024 by SW5 SAINT Edit
Mr X Posted 20 December, 2024 Posted 20 December, 2024 As long as this is short term as mentioned and we aren't tied to an unknown quantity!
Nordic Saint Posted 20 December, 2024 Posted 20 December, 2024 (edited) He had one very good year as a manager, with Crotone in Serie B in 2015/16. Apart from that, his career looks so so. But, the fact a big club like Roma appointed him shows he must have built a good reputation in Italy. Let's hope that both he and we can repeat that 2015/16 season. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivan_Juri%C4%87 Edited 22 December, 2024 by Nordic Saint
Osvaldorama Posted 20 December, 2024 Posted 20 December, 2024 Good appointment imo. Short term, so minimised risk. Defensive coach that will make us harder to beat. SR can be criticised for a lot, but this is one decision that makes a lot of sense.

Ankersen has obviously seen something in him that ordinary mortals cannot see. #EmbraceFailure https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivan_Juri%C4%87 Reading comprehension score: C- Won promotion to Serie A for first time in Crotone's history Genoa sound like a basket case, but having re-hired him he saved them from relegation (ie a similar job that he'd need to do here) In 2019 he joined a newly promoted club (Hellas Verona) and kept them in the league for 2 seasons despite having one of the smallest budgets in Serie A. Torino poached him from Hellas Verona. They had finished 17th the previous season. He kept them mid table for 3 seasons (10th, 10th, 9th) and left amicably at the end of his contract. Was appointed to Roma 18th September 2024 after the previous manager (an ex player) made a Horlicks of the first few games. Dismissed on 10th November, whilst still 4 points above the relegation zone. I guess it depends what you mean by failure. If you expected us to hire someone who had won one of the top 5 European leagues then yes he's not that. But he has demonstrated the ability to coach a side to punch above their weight and avoid relegation - which is exactly what we want him to do. Edited 21 December, 2024 by Patches O Houlihan 16

Gloucester Saint Posted 20 December, 2024 Posted 20 December, 2024 (edited) Out of all of SR’s appointments, this one has the most logic to it given the situation. We weren’t going to get a PL survival specialist, Martin needed to be given his P45 after the Bournemouth game to be feasible at all. Juric has some positive top leagues experience, Roma is a political basket-case so I wouldn’t judge on that. Plays more our sort of quicker/counter attacking Saints historically play and are more effective at. If he makes little impact, he moves on in the summer and nothing lost. If he does well, and we go down still, he could get a top 10 PL job. Or he might be OK, work well with the club/owners and decide to try to win the second tier next year. Saint_Jonny Posted 20 December, 2024 Posted 20 December, 2024 What is the SpazWeb name for the new manager going to be when he loses 9 of the next 10? Lego was absolutely hilarious for Martin so we have to continue our rich tradition of incredible banter. I'll kick things off with Durex. Great defensively but shit at putting it in the back of the net. 2 1

He's also got a far better record than Corboran and Rohl "On 18 September 2024, Jurić became the new head coach of Roma, following the sacking of Daniele De Rossi after earning just three points in the first four games of the season. Jurić failed to turn the team's fortunes and was regularly criticized for his management style and poor results; he was eventually dismissed on 10 November 2024, after a 2–3 home loss to Bologna that left Roma 20th in the Europa League table and only four points ahead of the relegation zone in Serie A." To be fair, some of the other names we were linked with, could have been worse. The very fact that Roma appointed him in the first place suggests that he can't be a total no hoper. So, let's hope things work out for him here. On reflection, my first post was a bit of a knee jerk reaction to the news and I agree with you, Scummer. He's done OK. I even recall that I enjoyed watching his Torino team's games on TV. Warning: Sometimes I post nonsense and then edit it (and post more nonsense). Edited 20 December, 2024 by Nordic Saint 3

Dusic Posted 20 December, 2024 Posted 20 December, 2024 My main reaction this is good luck to him, relegation won't be on him and it sounds like from his track record we will be back to a style of player more aligned to Ralph and I think generally with inferior players that works better. Which is the situation we are in right now. My main concern is not about Juric but that SR seem to have gone from one extreme to the other which says a lot about their lack of joined up thinking. Would imagine that transfer targets for example would be very different in the two styles. Also hope he can get the best from Dibling (Martin managed him pretty well and seemingly built a string rapport), to keep his value high. It would be galling to lose him for an average PL player type figure when he is a generational talent. 5

Midfield_General Posted 20 December, 2024 Posted 20 December, 2024 I'm going to stick my neck out and say that I think he'll deliver a better points per PL game ratio than RM. So on that basis, I'm in. 6
coalman Posted 20 December, 2024 Posted 20 December, 2024 (edited) The guy has a record of punching above his weight, coaching how to defend and counter attacking at speed. Which if you were writing a job description for our next manager would sound an awful lot like what we're looking for. No Premier League experience but then neither had Poch, Koeman or Ralph. Worst case - we get relegated and aren't tied to an expensive severance. Best case we somehow stay up and we've got our next manager. Inbetween case we still get relegated but things pick up. Just as long as we don't do a Hughes. As with all new Saints managers I'm willing to look for the best in him before harsh reality intervenes (whilst hoping it won't). Going for left field Championship picks hasn't worked out for us so let's try someone who has managed in a tough league. Edited 20 December, 2024 by coalman 7

If you are genuinely expecting us to avoid relegation comfortably then you might need to prepare for disappointment. RM's points per game ratio would be looking a bit healthier if the dice had fallen a little more kindly at crucial points in 3 or 4 games. But then the PL is generally unkind to Saints, and his position was pretty much untenable. It's not like we have a 'comfortably mid table squad' either is it... 1

LuckyNumber7 Posted 20 December, 2024 Posted 20 December, 2024 Juric seems like a very reasonable appointment to me. Has a very decent record with several smaller clubs in Italy, punching above their weight. I wouldn't judge him on his short time at Roma. But for those that will... He only managed 8 league games and took 10 points. In their other 8 games either side of his tenure they have taken 6 points. They are closer to the relegation zone now than when he left. 7

The only manager since Ronald to stand up to the board was Ralph, and did alright, so hopefully an omen. Puel was dignified towards Les despite allegedly not wanting Forster’s extension and some of the tat Reed brought in, but Les shat all over him anyway. Pellegrino was his poodle and then shat on Hughes summer 2018 with more players Mark didn’t want. Rasmus brought Jones in and loaded the club with all of the January 2023 window tat. Post-Wilcox he and Martin were not a positive combination for SFC. So a bit of challenge to the board might shake things up a bit. Edited 20 December, 2024 by Gloucester Saint
