Well?…

I’m irrationally positive now we have rid ourselves of the footballing dementor. The second half against Liverpool shows what can be done if effort and positivity are applied, “hard work beats talent” etc. realistically it may not beat it but it does give you a much better chance. I think we’ll see more of that under Juric.

Hopefully we’ll rid ourselves of some of the deadwood and make a decent signing or two in the January window.

it ain’t over ‘till it’s over.

Actually, there are 22 games left. What do we need, say, 37 points, so 32 more. With eight wins we’d also need eight draws, or in other words, lose no more than six……….we’re not going to do that.

We’ve got 6 homes games that we would have to win all of you’d think if we were to have a chance - West Ham, Brentford, Wolves, Palace, Bompey and Fulham. Plus Ipswich and Leicester away. That ain’t going to happen.

Not forgetting that our squad is pretty crap for this level.

Depends on how shit the other relegation candidates get to lower the points needed for 17th place. But I just can’t see an imminently successful turnaround over the next 22 games. The change in Manager was too late.

Agreed. The best thing we can do as a fan base is accept we are going to get relegated. Pressure off and hopefully we can enjoy a few more wins and better performances between now and the end of the season. It's a real shame but that's on SR for total mismanagement yet again.

15-20 points is probably on the optimistic end of a reasonable-ish prediction for this season (total, including the 5 we have so far). Staying up would probably require 35 ish, so 30 from 22 games looks highly unlikely. I’m not asking anyone to like Martin but I think some people are grossly overestimating the achievements he was holding us back from.

I'd suggest that's a tongue in cheek way of singing we're going down, gallows humour, whereas they are starting to foam at the mouth at the prospect of playing us on equal terms for the first time in 13 years

Lego head has well and truly fucked us. We might catch Ipswich, but we ain’t catching 2 others. Had Mr “I’m not here to grind out results” ground out another 3 or 4 points I’d say it was possible, but there’s no chance unless somebody suddenly does a Saganowski and has a remarkable run of scoring.

And even then we need our leaky defence to suddenly start performing as a unit and stop the individual mistakes.

All I'm hoping for is to just see improvement. It won't be enough but improvement would be not hitting Derbyesque levels of shiteness.  I'd like to see us drag ourselves off the floor and at least get close... especially if we suddenly find out teams get points deductions and suddenly we're right back into the mixer for safety.

False hope would suck but id take it. As it stands at least we know we're down but hypothetically it'd be worse to see others get points deductions and suddenly realise a bit of an improvement could have seen us safe.

Clinging to straws a bit there with the points deductions but still, we can dream.

Bookies will give you excellent odds and happily take your money.

With 22 games left its obviously possible, but it's not happening is it.

It needs a major uplift in form and at least 3 of the other 4 contenders, to be as as abysmal as Saints. You can guarantee they'll all conspire to keep Saints exactly where they are. Watch the suspicious draws to start appearing.

Everton have a 10 point advantage already. That takes the pressure off them a bit. Real scrap will probably be between Wolves and Leicester.

I'd say getting more than 20 is a suitably ambitious target and try to avoid finishing last.

At the very least go into next season with some hope and a better plan than this year.

We just wanted to be in the mix. You know, like Ipswich. Or are we going to pretend that was some unreasonable impossible dream.

Or.. Increase our current average from 0.313 points per game to 1.46 per game.

Doesn't seem achievable.

You know exactly what’s going to happen. Every mistake, every loss, the posters that supported Martin will be banging the same old tune, “its the players”, “not Russ’ fault”, “cant coach this lot”, Of course, “scar tissue” won’t be an issue, that’s healed already. Fulham away, piece of piss, can’t believe he hasn’t turned it round yet…

They just miss the free scoring dominant football they became used to under Martin.

I thought we would get relegated before a ball was kicked this season but I did expect us to compete.

100%.

You can see the Martinettes on this forum positioning themselves on here already.

All of a sudden the poor results and shit football that they have been brushing off and disregarding all season...all of a sudden they are going to be outraged. Defeats will suddenly be a bad thing after all because their boy isn't in charge.

We are getting relegated we all know we are, and that is on Russell Martin. Russell Martin has relegated us before Christmas. Russell Martin.

Just a few divs on here will be working overtime to pin it on the new guy.

We’ve more chance of winning the league then avoiding relegation. In other words, there’s zero chance.

And that is down to absolutely nobody other than Russell Martin.

Leicester are 4th to bottom and they look on track for 35 points.

Therefore for Saints to get 30 from 22 games is the form of a 51 point season.

If the new guy manages that then he'd have performed miracles.

Personally if we could get 20-25 points I'd be happy. It would also prove that RM was always the problem. We'll find out in time.

It was obvious to many that Martin would do incredibly well to last the season.

I think most of us predicted Russball wouldn't work in the Premier League but it would've been fair for the board to give him 10 games after he ultimately got us up (just about). At that point we had 1 point I believe - had to go then.

The entire squad could grow Franny 'taches and we'd still not be likely to escape this.

Needs others to slump, possibly with some points deductions, and us to have a massive uptick in form.

As posted, if they were going to do it, with a hope of staying up, then that time was 6 weeks ago at least.

if we stay up, I'll gladly surf on that great escape wave...
If we're going down, I'll support them next year in the Championship.

Irrespective, I want for that team to give a fuck and try their best until then.
Best of luck and welcome Mr Juric.

Corrected it for you.

Anyone in charge with more than one brain cell would've sacked RM after the Bournemouth debacle. As it was, he kept him on way past the point of no return, and if reports are true would've kept him on after the Spurs disaster but for Dragan's intervention.

Not making any excuses for RM but unsure you can pin it all to one guy. I'd add the Board,  senior management as well as the coaching and playing staff for our current mess. All share some responsibility whether it was the appointment, replacement or sacking of the Manager, Director of Football (anyone?) or coaching staff (is Juric bringing anyone?) , the poor recruitment, bad preparations, indiscipline or lack of effort.

It's so hard to run such an enterprise. When the chips are down, I'd be looking for hard graft, ideas and ownership from my senior team. I don't think we've seen a lot of that in the past few months.

Let's hope for better soon.

You want the whole season to play out before you decide that Saints fans expecting us to do as well as Ipswich (2 wins, tonked 4 nil at home this afternoon) was an unreasonable impossible dream?

Ok then.

As above: the change is too late to save us from the drop.

Give me energy, attacking intent, organisation, and genuine effort. If I see that, I'm happy.

Then we regroup and go again next season.

As long as we can get more points than Derby so we don't set yet another record, in my eyes, it won't be a total disaster of a season. Just.

Getting a little bit of pride back, instead of borderline shame wouldn't go amiss either. Welcome Ivan Jurić and good luck.

As others have said, we likely need 30 more points to stay up. Possibly 31 or 32.

Not going to happen.

What we do need to do is get a bit of pride back. And win the FA Cup. That'll do.
