rallyboy Posted 18 December, 2024 Posted 18 December, 2024 Perhaps there will be a golden ticket of Man City getting relegated and we just need to overhaul Ipswich and Wolves... Mathematically that is doable, and better than fighting City for the Championship next season. 1
Saint Fan CaM Posted 18 December, 2024 Posted 18 December, 2024 My yardstick for success starts with the actual managerial appointment. Get that wrong and all bets are off, so it’s crucial a manager with significant PL level experience is acquired. Also will be hugely important in reconnecting with the fanbase. Assuming the above is sorted then its… 1. Get the squad tangibly fitter asap, although clearly we’ll only likely see this in performances in games - e.g. not conceding late in games. 2. Get shot of as much deadwood in the squad as possible in January - e.g. BBD, Sulemana etc. Resist the calls to sell Dibling/KWP/THB. 3. Obtain more points than Derby’s total. We don’t need that kind of stat hanging around like a bad smell forever (which it probably would). Beyond that winning enough games to put the scarers on the other teams around us might actually see a miracle - i.e. it would be great to go into a game thinking we might actually have a chance of some points. 4. Ensure the tactical approach to PL games is tangibly better than the debacle we’ve witnessed with Martin. Forget what might be appropriate for the Championship - what matters is repairing the confidence of the current squad in the PL and that means setting the 1st team up in the best possible manner starting with selecting our best 11 players playing in their natural positions. Then ensuring there are clear instructions on how to transition from defence into midfield and beyond without giving away the ball cheaply in our half. Take the shackles off our creative players so we move forward with pace 90% of the time. Don’t ever rely on a 1-0 lead to win a game…be ruthless. Thats what I’ll be looking for - yes, we’re almost certainly relegated, but I want to see our team LOOK LIKE they’re fighting for a place in Europe. 2
Mr Nimbus Posted 18 December, 2024 Posted 18 December, 2024 Just look like a semi-organised defensive unit. I am so sick of wide open spaces all over the pitch and having a feeling we are going to concede from any attack the opposition put together 3
Sarnia Cherie Posted 18 December, 2024 Posted 18 December, 2024 As much as I want a new manager, I also want new owners. Rasmus Ankersen is a certifiable idiot with his 'If it ain't broke, consider breaking it' claptrap. The managerial appointments SR have made since Ralph went have been pathetic and made us into a laughing stock that we can keep getting it so wrong, over and over again. Nathan (Legend in his own mind) Jones, Reuben Selles who spent more time choosing his roll-neck sweaters and suits for match days than he ever did on the team selection and Russell Martin who doggedly stuck to his invincible gameplan while everything around him went to pot. I hope for the best but expect the worst when SR have a say in anything. 1

Inevitably, there will be people that compare Jurić's first 16 games in the PL with what Martin achieved in his 16 PL games. However, that wouldn't be comparing like-with-like... Martin's 16 games were preceded by a full pre-season and with an inherent feel-good factor about the place. Jurić isn't starting from the same place. Firstly, as you say, he's got players that aren't "front footed fooball" fit. And, secondly, he's not had any preparation time to instill his way of playing and unprogram the possession-based-football 'automatisms' that are ingrained in the players' minds. It's obviously a tad concerning that after a relatively competitive start versus West Ham, we appear to have taken steps backwards in the following 2 games, but that could just be the consequences of the club trying to change the whole playing philosophy mid-season, which will inevitably lead to disjointed and inconsistent performances. I gave Martin the benefit of the doubt for 10 games this season; I think we need more than that to judge Jurić, given the significant headstart Martin had over him. Edited Monday at 15:30 by trousers
disconnect Posted Monday at 15:27 Posted Monday at 15:27 I'm expecting better than Martin achieved, and once he's got them a bit fitter (and tried to get rid of the damage previously done by Martin), a few more goals going in and a team looking like we at least want to score a goal. Minus the finishing and a couple of lapses, the performance against West Ham was much better than we'd seen from the team for quite a while. Fingers crossed we see a big reaction from this weekend. 1
