Games selling out

This relegation business seems to be good for ticket sales. Looks like the next three homes are a sell out ... exchange open for those who may prefer to wash their hair.

I was on cruise recently and chatting away about Saints when the bloke said he knew some Liverpool fans who bought Saints ST so could see them locally plus other Prem games.

Not sure if same for other sides but would think local Utd fans and top 6 could get tickets easily with the clowns who run this club.

Pretty mad how good the attendances are, all things considered.

I remember the Branfoot days where a few Premier League games in the 93/94 season only had about 9,000 at The Dell (a cup game with Shewsbury only had about 5,000).

True, and the fanbase has certainly grown. But tourists/local people supporting other clubs where they are from accounts for some of it. The club won’t have the same attendances next season if they cling onto Martin.

I wasn't going to matches at the time, but even when we were flying under Adkins I don't think we were getting similarly high attendances as we did last season, so I've been a bit surprised at the sizes of our crowds last season and this season. You would think the appetite to see Southampton Nil as a home supporter wouldn't be that great.

We haven't failed to score at home in any competition since we played Man Utd in September, and even then we missed a penalty.

Loads decided to get season tickets riding the wave of the play off excitement and Wembley win. I think our support has been strong regardless to be honest,  we averaged over 30k in the championship. 

Away support exceptional taking biggest allocation possible and selling out each game, in the last 12 months is it only Blackburn away that didn't sell out and still took good numbers up there.

The real problem is the amount we concede and its nearly always more than we score due to the utter nonsensical style martin insists on deploying

Thing is watching your local team is a captive market if you’re an avid supporter - even if the results are poor as they are now, it’s possibly your main social outlet and/or hobby. Plus there is a lot more football tourism nowadays - much more than the Dell days - what with the student population in Southampton, who don’t need to be supporters of Liverpool or Utd etc…they just like a day out to see plucky Saints get roundely thrashed by another team with lots of goals. SFC delivers.

Put simply, the population of this country is increasing fast. The population of Southampton, inside the city limits, has increased by over 30,000 since St Mary's was built and is likely to increase by much more than that in future. The surrounding area has seen big increases in population too and new houses are being built on nearly every available green space around the city.

I often find myself agreeing with your posts but while you may be correct here, I think you took my original comment a bit too literally. Sadly it won’t change the fact that many consider our season to be a write-off already, and justifiably so. Ah well, at least we can count on a goal this Sunday.

What a strange way to look at things, is that honestly how you feel? You only want to attend when its the good times? 
I love going to watch Saints (win, lose or draw... although the wins are far more preferable and enjoyable!) I think the games sell out, because like me, many enjoy the whole 'day out' and catching up with family and friends, as much as just the game itself (often more tbh and the game ruins it). I wont stop going to watch them just because the last 16 weeks have been a bit sh*t!? I've committed too many years and am wedded for life sadly... and didnt realise there was an option to just dip in when things are good (as I wouldnt have attended much over the last 40 years if so!) 😉

I enjoy going when we win, or at least seem capable of winning, I tolerate going when our performances are bad (as has been the case for quite a while in the Prem) but I still go as, unfortunately.
It is like a drug, expensive and addictive.
I am very weak willed so I am so grateful that I have never smoked or taken illicit drugs otherwise I would be wrapped in a blanket outside of West Quay
All that said I do find myself needing a bit more alcohol than normal recently to get me through dire times post match.

What an odd post. Not sure what you’re getting at to be honest. But if it helps, I’ve probably done 95% of all our games in the last 15 years with 10 other lads. Home, away and across Europe.

Still doesn’t mean I’m just happy with us scoring though, as if winning isn’t the actual objective.

I used to enjoy going and I would arrange my life and my travels around the home fixtures but this season it's different.  The boring football is bad enough but what really infuriates me are the needless,  senseless mistakes which gift chances to the opposition. 

I've had enough.

I was unable to attend the recent game against Chelsea so took advantage of the ticket exchange. Last night I was informed by the people who I sit near in the Chapel that my seat was occupied by someone who was clearly a Chelsea supporter. In my view this confirms what I think many of us believe, that the club are only interested in bums on seats regardless.To cap it all I left at half time last night (my choice), walked around the ground to the Northam with the intention of using the footbridge to leave the area. Along with many others with the same idea I was prevented from doing this by several jobsworths who bluntly informed us that we had to walk the long way round. Why do the club treat their supporters with utter contempt? I have been going to games since 1966, I doubt that I shall carry on much longer.

Ultimately, we are nothing but a complete nuisance to them and they’d happily play every game with nobody there if they could get away with it.

To be fair to SR, they are carrying on the behaviours of Semmens and co although they should challenge themselves to do better. With Semmens, Toby Steele and that ex-Millwall plonker as head of security, we had block 1 closed, loads of ejections which were dubious, the padded seats debacle in the Kingsland. Plus the ‘lucky to be here’ stuff at the fans forum.

Not an easy club to like let alone love in recent years.

SR would argue they've tried initiatives to "improve the fan experience " 

- By creating an home end of safe standing 

- investing in fan zones and entertainment 

And let's not forget the light shows and big flags. 

However a cynic would see them as attempts to just milk the fanbase for more money, moving away fans allowed them to sanitise the Itchen North paving the way for our opulent luxury Knightwood lounge (can't see many bookings for that in the Championship)
