  • On how he hopes to turn around Saints' fortunes: "We are not far away and we have to just keep working, keep concentrating on the process and ourselves and just keep trying to be better."

Well, couldn't have summed up better why he fails again and again. Football is ALSO about the 11 players on the pitch on the OTHER TEAM you absolute delusional muppet.

Focusing on your own team is fine when you're a development or age group coach but the fact is he makes all his players perform worse even if they feel good so he fails at that too. But the whole point of top flight management is figuring how to counter the other 11 twats out there while figuring out how to stop them countering you. Guess he missed that memo.

Watching spurs v rangers right now.. spurs took terrible when rangers play at tempo.. unfortunately we won’t change and not learn anything from this game.

If we just look at ourselves, trust the process and maintain our identity then we don't need to learn.

Regardless of our shiteness, Spurs are absolutely there for the taking.

Aside from playing like crap, they have one fit centre back (3rd choice), and both defensive midfielders suspended.

If we can't manage a shot on goal, burn the stadium down and retire the club.

He was definitely under pressure in that press conference and might have had a bit of coaching to control his head turning and keep his arms closed.  He still kept making that 'warm' smile he pops out when he thinks he needs to smile to make himself appear friendly when he isn't/hasn't been.

He did actually mention and acknowledge this 'Plan B' thing although it really was "Plan A plus a tiny little bit because he said so but really it's not". He has started in his own way to become Jones-esque in terms of defensiveness so the press are getting to him and they'll carry on doing that because that's what they do.

His answer about Lumley's long-kicking was a fudge.

I think this game will be no attack against no defence: 0-0.

I agree BarberSaint, the nationals have seen they can bait him and he’ll react and give them easy copy to mock him with, as has happened again today. He will really blow a fuse when the fan protests really get going as they will on Sunday. The style of football is being equally pilloried which puts a lot of pressure on SR around his replacement.

SR selling up would make sense now really. The only way SR and Southampton FC can co-exist is a total separation from Rasmus Ankerson, which would require a biggish name DoF and first team manager.

Still feel we will win a second game in the PL this season but can’t see that being on Sunday. Spurs will have too much for us, however I’m not ruling out a goal but we do need to have a shot on target.

Spurs are not great so it will be one of those games where we look better and there is a lot of bravery and heart,  but we will conspire to lose again through a lack of belief. At St Marys football is more about emotions than tactics and ability.

Also thinking the tombola selection machine might give a start to BBD for the first time in a couple of months but who knows.

whatever happens it will be an eventful matchday 16

Spurs have one win in 8, was that the 4-0  against Man City? So one way we definitely don't want to play is try to be like Man City.

Was a real good battle v Rangers last night , need to get at them.

Fraser Forster should get a good reception coming back.

All of which is true but you know that we won’t play a higher tempo like Rangers did because it isn’t Russell’s ‘philosophy’. Hence pressure relieved on Spurs.

Spurs must be rubbing their hands at the prospect of playing us. RM has consistently stated he won't change, he gushed over their manager doing the same. He will this weekend, they'll play exactly the same way that destroyed Man fuckin' City, it will just be easier this time.

Postecoglou said thanks Russel for not changing. Again.

Spurs looking absolutely dreadful against Rangers

I thought that, then I thought Rangers played with 10x the aggression and intensity we do, so it’s probably irrelevant. (nb.  Rangers playing in a manner which teams like us should be)

Will they need Fraser Forster or any goalkeeper for that matter ?

We will pointlessly play the ball around the back and eventually give it to Son who'll score, Spurs will look toothless and there for the taking, but Martin won't allow our players to attack so that won't matter.

I'm going 3-1 Spurs in what will most likely be the most boring game of football all weekend, played at a stupid kick off time so that overseas "fans" can get their fix of paint drying in before the working week starts.

After the game Martin will say how brave we were and utterly ignore that his complete and utter fucking incompetence is going to lead to us having the lowest points total of any premier league team ever.

Big Ange will praise Martin in a patronising way and we will limp on to our next game, with the Saints fans wondering if overdosing on sleeping pills is more enjoyable that watching the floating turd that is Russell Martin's "style".

Well it is a winnable game that's for sure. Although it needs some sensible play for once.

With Bendarek and Onuachu back the team is definitely stronger. How RM sets them up is another thing altogether.

Nathan Woods is the one positive to come out of the last two games. One swallow and all that but the only way a club like Saints can progress is to give players like him game time to progress, and get up to Premier League standard. We need a big unit at the back and he is that.

Although I share the collective frustration, I do still want RM to succeed. I just wish he would stop messing about with selections. Put out the best players in their best positions.

For example leaving out Aribo for Bree against Villa, was ridiculous. No surprise the team barely entered Villa's half.

I think the TNT should be put under RM's 'philosophy' and detonated.

He could probably go sit with the home fans, have a cup of hot chocolate and a chin wag about the good ol' days and still we'd not threaten the Spurs goal.

Interesting insights from Chris Sutton:

This should be a great game of football.

It's one for the purists, really, because Southampton will play their defined style under Russell Martin and Ange Postecoglou's Tottenham will definitely do the same.

Both managers have been criticised recently and some of the stuff written and said about Postecoglou after Spurs lost to Chelsea was staggering, although it is the same after every defeat.

As I said on the Monday Night Club, on their day Spurs are the best team to watch in the Premier League, but they are just patchy.

They should get over the line here, though, because Southampton have bigger problems.

It looks like Saints are going to get relegated but I hope they see the bigger picture when it comes to Martin.

For starters, he got them promoted, which wasn't an easy job. Keeping them up was always going to be even harder but, because Southampton have had a pretty recent spell of doing OK in the Premier League, their fans think they should be doing much better.

It was a similar story with Leicester under Steve Cooper, where expectations were unrealistic. He got the sack but I hope Saints stick with Martin because with a bit of patience they could come back, stronger.

Sutton's prediction: 1-2

Stephen's prediction: Tottenham have been terrible but Southampton keep losing. I think they are going down, aren't they? 0-2

Remember Football Special that Sutton is a leading ex-Norwich figure just like Martin is. Backing each other up and probably know each other. If Nathan Jones had been playing that style he wouldn’t said that. Not a million miles from say one of the Redknapps supporting Lampard at Coventry after a wretched spell with their fans calling for his head.

Plus he’s been up Spurs managers arse since he walked through the door. Celtic connection. “One for the purists” load of old pony, Spurs are exciting at times, there’s fucking zero excitement watching RussBall.

I assumed he was being sarcastic

Sutton has always been negative when it comes to Saints, seems to hate us for some reason which might explain why he wants us to keep Martin so he can laugh at our expense

There you have it. It's the fans fault for having unrealistic expectations and we need to stick with Martin. Sutton shows us how you say "I'm phoning it in" without saying you're phoning it in. At least Lawrenson only predicted Saints to lose every week.

It's staggering isn't it, most fans probably expected us to struggle this season, many of us probably thought we'd get relegated, but we at least thought we'd give it a go, try and score goals, try and win games. But that, it would appear, is us just being unrealistic...!  Here we are, realistically already relegated, headed for some of the worst premiereship stats in history, and the fans have unrealistic expectations...!

What I have learned by page 3 of saintsweb... Spurs cannot handle play with tempo. Spurs can beat Man City possession-style football. However, Russel knows better than Pep, so we will bravely pass sideways and backwards (minus the occasional Dibling or KWP scamper).

If Man City loses 0-4, we can easily double that. But I am an optimist, so  0-6. >66% possession.  1 shot off target early in the game before we get scored on and implode. At least one goal gifted by a pass from Lumley or McCarthy -- is there really a difference?
