I think it was 2004, twenty years ago, about this time of year as well, when many of us hoped/thought his arrival would bring about an upturn in our fortunes...  How wrong we were. So, lesson on following Saints, prepare for disappointment.

Think his first game in charge was Middlesbrough at home, wasn't it? Went 2-0 up playing excellent football before some questionable subs and throwing it away.

I watch quite a bit of the LP and Santa Clara (minnows) are doing very well at the moment but the standard in general is very poor, rather like the Scottish Prem in terms of quality spread.  Would be very left field, perhaps too left field even for SR, but who knows.

Read something about how he's got his team doing the basics well and hasn't tried to be too clever. They play a 4-2-3-1 and generally play a low block to be hard to beat, looking to hit teams using transitions.

Sounds way too sensible for SR to consider.

He does sport the required beard so a good start.

His club CD Santa Clara are based in the Azores so that means a 2,000 mile round trip for every away game, maybe he's sick of airports. Away to Middlesbrough next season will feel like a doddle.

Sounds idealistic. Far too logical.

Yes it was.

Think Middlesbrough scored in 89th minute and injury time. First goal I recall was a bit of a fluke from a corner, skimmed someone’s head (possibly Higginbotham) and went in. Confidence drained and the second was inevitable, our defenders backed off and backed off leaving someone the opportunity to get a shot in. As I remember it was almost in slow motion with a scuffed shot that was always going in.

That set the tone. Always thought had we held on to that the season might have gone differently. But we’ll never know.

That’s me out then.

Anyway, I think RM has used up our UEFA  Beard Quota for the next decade.

I was at that game , equaliser was scored by Downing, if I remember they almost got a winner too which was tipped behind for a corner. Agree, if we’d held on to that, I think we’d have survived

Someone gave the bookies a bumsteer yesterday and gave us all a glimmer of hope.

Sunk like a stone to be the next manager to leave @ 1/4.

Now back to 4th fav @ 13/2.

Guess we can look forward to some more Russball for a while longer, not much need for this thread now, obviously not likely anytime soon.

13/2 is pretty incredible odds considering the position we're in.

A forum member just jizzed his pants over the 4-2-3-1 formation

Your latest posts suggest that you know that Martin is going/gone. You aren't really trying so hard now to disuade posters that you aren't club PR.

I promise you you’re reading far too much into my posts and doing that will not be worthwhile 😂. I’m pretty sure I posted I expected Martin to be sacked after Wolves as well.

It's what most of the top sides adopt so maybe it's a formation that works - the clue is in the fact that Russell doesn't utilise it but the successful sides do.

Yes, it skimmed off Danny’s head, through bad positioning. Then the players panicked, I went for a piss and left my seat in the Kingsland N as I was hoping by the time I returned that the final whilst would go but all I heard mid-slash was the Boro fans jumping up and down and the tannoy announcement of Downing’s goal. Sliding doors moment that.

Maybe, not heard of him before today, but clearly doing something right. PL is a really funny league in terms of quality and consistency, so obviously much harder to compare than Pochettino at Espanyol per se, who most doubted at that time.

Vasco Matos tactics, fairplay to Santa Clara though they are doing great this season recently just beat sporting away, 4th in league.

"Santa Clara’s defensive compactness allowed them to barely receive any goalscoring chances against themselves."

Why?

Portuguese club C D Santa Clara were in turmoil when he went there much like we are now. They were relegated in 2023 with a very low points total having gone through 3 different managers. All their best players left. Vasco Matos came in with a rebuild job on his hands. Remarkably he got them promoted back to Liga 1 in his first season as champions of Liga 2. Previously their defence had leaked goals for fun (ring any bells?) and he turned them into the meanest rear guard in Liga 2 conceding only 19 goals in 34 matches. Oh and his favoured formation is 4-2-3-1 which is what we should be playing. But, perhaps the biggest factor is that he isn't Russell Martin 🙂 . It's unlikely we'd get him even if he was on the radar of the clowns running our club but my response to your question is....why not?

If we could just get someone who can see that JS is absolutely not captain material then that would be a great start.

The slaughtering of Jack Stephens is not hilarious. Bloke is getting and has got torrents of abuse and he will be his own worst critic - but hey keep piling in with the cheap shots on a thread meant to be discussing the rumour RM is sacked.

He made some  football mistakes but he’s a honest pro decent bloke - and still our Club Captain. So, abuse him and yiu are disrespecting Southampton Football club.

And whether you hate him and hate RM or whoever the hell you need to hate to make it through the day - you should take that on board because there’s many who are Southampton til we die and don’t like people dissing the club like that.

I didn't find his moronic hair pulling hilarious. It was unprofessional, especially when two of our centre backs were already unavailable. A captain should do better.

Imagine this a manager changing tactics and formation during different phases…

”Santa Clara usually line up in a 3-4-3 but change things up in terms of shape during their press and only during their press.

Santa Clara change their shape into a 4-2-3-1 during these situations”

How many more times...few of us hate anyone at the football club. Stop confusing criticism with hate as they are two totally different things.

Pointing out that JS falls way short of the required qualities to be captain of a PL team is not "slaughtering" FFS. Get a grip you drama queen.

Hi Jack. Don’t pull people’s hair you tit, especially when there’s a hundred cameras watching you.
