Who will be in goal today?

Lumley with zero confidence after two gaffes last time?

Or McCarthy with zero confidence after being dropped after his gaffes?

An injured Ramsdale seems the best option

We need a proper shot-stopper.

Should start Bazunu.

I'm available, haven't made any goalkeeping gaffes for about 30 years unlike our usual lot.  Then again being 70 might put them off picking me 🤣🤣🤣

Lallana. No real running required and he'll get plenty of touches of the ball so we get to use his quality. Plus, with his physical presence we'll be able to dominate any crosses that come into our box.

We’ll play short, intricate passes when the wind is behind us and long ball would be better, then punt the ball long when we’re facing the wind. It’s the Russ way to do things backwards.

I half expect a comical own goal by somebody today.

Yes, I don't think the wind will help Russball.

Forgot to mention I made another £50 betting against Saints on Wednesday.

Gambling has never been so easy.

That's pretty much the best team he could have put out. Worryingly.

Our central midfield looks lacking (again). Just Downes and Fernandes (who should be higher up the pitch)

Yep, but I'm not sure what else he could have done. Aribo arguably could have played alongside Downes, but in a 541 (or whatever it's supposed to be) that means Fernandes wide left where he's wasted.

I'd play 451 - Downes and Aribo in central mid with Fernandes just ahead of them

Should have signed a DM to help Downes out.

Fucking suicidal playing with only one holding midfielder every week

One day he'll realise he should be setting up with a double pivot but he's smarter than all the other top coaches who do it.

It doesn’t matter what our team is, regardless of what the squad looks like we still aren’t winning 😂

In USA at the moment , merseyside derby off so listened to panel chatting about other matches coming up . Ex ManU bloke talking about Saints said “ he may be a dinosaur but playing 5 yard passes to the keeper in your own penalty box is madness which leads to hurried clearance and further pressure “ etc he did say RM will be dammed if he sticks or twists now !

reckon we will give away a golden chance within 5 mins, but needlessly fannying about with the ball in our defensive 3rd....Martin will of course make point of clapping the move

See into this as you may, but the ghost of Ian Branfoot (yes, I know he’s still with us) visited me in a dream last night and said we’re going to win 3-1.

What would Branfoot have made of Martin's possession tactics? If he appears again can you get some more insights?

I'm afraid I've just returned from the future and unfortunately we lose this game 3-0

Bloody hell - just shows how poor our squad is with half that team and our subs!  Lesley is obviously done at Saints (good riddance he is utter shite) as he can't even make a low quality bench.

Think Branfoot's ghost was giving you duff information.

Can you really see our current team scoring three goals in a Prem game this season?

We couldnt even threaten the goal when playing most of the game against a 10 man Newcastle team.

Genuine question. Which would you rather have happen to day?

- a tough, battling 2-1 win, with no bad defensive error... and a nice goal that comes from playing Russball style from the back - evidence that seems strong enough for RM to stay in the job for the coming weeks.

- a crushing 3-0 loss with at least one goal coming from defensive error at the back, and the final straw for RM so that he's sacked in the morning?

Reply 👍for the first and 👎 to the second. I'm v curious to know.

Ironically enough I went down to the then lowly Bournemouth for a pre season game during the Branfoot era and was sat next to Steve Williams who had played a couple of pre season games for the Saints at the time.
He was left out of the friendly as he had a 'discussion' with Ian Branfoot who had castigated him for coming short to receive the ball from a Saints goal kick.
Branfoot had told him not to do that as there was the chance of losing the ball close to goal and suffering the consequences.
Branfoot wanted the ball to be propelled up into the opponents half as quickly as possible and make use of the big target man who provided the main target for the teams offensive play.
Bit different nowadays.
Perhaps Steve Williams ought to come out of retirement!!

How on this earth does Aribo get dropped?
Downs has been very average but comes straight back in. This is one of the problems with RM he sticks with his favs and  if others dare have a good game they are instantly dropped!

I find it hard to say this, but I expect Branfoot would at least get more out of Tall Paul by actually lumping the ball to him.

In fairness, we probably should have scored three against both Leicester and Liverpool.

Same with Cornet. Recruitment continues to be a massive problem for us , as I doubt those two loan players came cheap
