64saint Posted 17 November, 2024 Posted 17 November, 2024 (edited) Some great reminiscing and footage of Dave Watson before the England v Republic of Ireland game today on ITV before the match. What a defender for Saint's. Dave sadly suffering, like many ex professional players now from dementia probably not helped by heading the old leather balls. His wife fighting for help for him. He's at Wembley today, I think there's a presentation to him before today's game. Kevin Keegan used to say that big Dave would put his head where others wouldn't even put there feet. East Kent Saint Posted 17 November, 2024 Posted 17 November, 2024 Appeared on ITV pre England match , suffering from dementia now . Showed him heading a great goal for Saints at the Dell but he was then semi comatose lying on the pitch . One the the great old fashioned defenders but it’s cost him and his family. 3 2

Remember the incident, it was what was then described as a towering header. Times have changed with him being able to continue the match. How tragic that both Dave Watson and Chris Nicholl from the same era and defence have suffered a similar fate. 3
Kenilworthy Posted 17 November, 2024 Posted 17 November, 2024 I believe Dave Watson is a record holder as the only player to be selected for three successive England games while with three different clubs - Manchester City, Werder Breman and Saints
Wade Garrett Posted 17 November, 2024 Posted 17 November, 2024 Couldn’t have been much fun for any forwards playing against him and Chris Nicholl.

Not at The Dell, but despite those two we were often a bit of a soft touch away from home. Not sure they were as intimidating as you’d have liked. Probably wider issues, not just them, our home form was excellent but poor away.
rallyboy Posted 18 November, 2024 Posted 18 November, 2024 I was there for that Man City game too and I remember seeing Dave leaving the ground afterwards. He was a really nice guy and a big music fan, especially Quo - really sad to see this now. 2
Holmes_and_Watson Posted 21 November, 2024 Posted 21 November, 2024 Dave's wife and daughter on 5 live in an open discussion on the impact of heading, Dave as dad and husband, and the changes. A really good listen. Oh, and the presenter said Rotherham, Sunderland and City and missed us out. Yeah, he did get more games for them but a cracking player for us.
