Us Vs Derby 07/08 Vs Shef Utd 23/24

I'm interested to see how people think we compare to a couple of other low point scoring teams from the Premier League's history. Everyone knows Derby ended up with 11 points and Sheffield Utd were only last season so I picked them too, ending up on 16 points.

Derby infamously were essentially a midtable championship side trying to compete in the Premier League, whilst also suffering off the field issues with new owners with a stingy attitude to purchasing players. After accidentally getting promoted (beating us in the process), they won one game all season against Newcastle (they also drew with them in the reverse fixture which is quite funny to think about; Derby got over a third of their points against Newcastle alone 😂

Sheffield United got automatically promoted with one of the best teams in the championship at the time, but sold all the better players, leaving them with a championship playoff level team. They were quite pragmatic though, and managed to fairly comfortably get enough points to avoid going into the history books.

We probably have a similar quality squad to Sheffield United last season, but we're not playing to our strengths and are being very naive in trying to pass more technically gifted teams to death. I think Derby had a worse team than us, but the premier league may have been less competitive then.

I personally think we'll end on about 12-15 points if nothing changes. I think we'll stumble to the odd win or two like at Everton, and a couple of draws.

After 11 games:

Derby- 6 points

Sheffield Utd - 4 points

Us- 4 points

Derby started that season with a squad that included Robert Earnshaw, Jon Macken, Tyrone Mears, Kenny Miller and Giles Barnes, plus one-time Saints Matty Oakley and Lee Holmes. In January they brought in players including Danny Mills, Robbie Savage, Roy Carroll, Alan Stubbs and Lauren Robert. How does that stack up to our squad?

They were managed by that horrible little twat Billy Davies, until they sacked him on 26th November having won only one game, and replaced him with Paul Jewell.

They recorded a top-flight record 32 games without a win, and were relegated on 29th March, 19 points from safety with six games left.

At the end of the season they were P38, W1, D8, L29, F20, A89, GD -69, PTS11.

Even Davies had six points after 11 games though.

I was thinking about giving Minsk's thread a miss this season as it doesn't deserve to be sullied by our current form. Says a lot that we are comparing ourselves to Derby in this thread but that's not the fault of us fans.

In our last PL season, 12 points out of our 25-point total came from Leicester and Chelsea. Happy times!

Sheffield United got thrashed 8-0 by Newcastle, Arsenal 5-0, Burnley (!) 5-0 , Aston Villa 5-0, Brighton 5-0, Arsenal 6-0 and Newcastle 5-1.

We're not as bad as them, I know we lost 5-0 twice last season but we've not looked as bad as some of those displays above (yet).

Yeah, that is true. Looking at when those results happened, they were fairly evenly spaced throughout the season, so it wasn't like they were getting used to the league or that they'd given up at the end of the season when they all happened. Unfortunately points wise, a 2-0 loss gets you the same number of points as a 8-0 loss.

I think we resemble Sheffield United closest, but I look at our squad and still feel it has a bit more about it.

I think we'll get more points than Sheffield United did, I predict the low 20's and -50 gd or similar. Obviously that's 20th by some distance and still one of the worst ever PL teams, but I do think we'll make 20 points.

I think we’ll leak more goals than that. We’re currently on course for over 70 against and to achieve (!) -50 we’d need to score 20 but I don’t think you’ll be far out.

We aren’t making 20 points if Martin stays.

If he goes - then maybe

I don’t see us making 20 points if Martin stays, and don’t trust the owners to find someone who will get us there anyway if they do sack him. We’re going down whatever it’s all about avoiding utter humiliation from here on in. Things are so bleak right now I’d almost view reaching 20 points as some form of success 😬

Don’t know where the points are going to come from but it’s very much looking like another 20th place finish so that’s a hattrick of being the worst team in the Prem each relegation year.  At least when we go down we do a proper job of it!

Agree with most here - can’t see us getting 10 points, let alone 20. And as the season stretches on the team will become less motivated and will be expecting to lose. I can see some embarrassing thumpings coming our way.

RM will find it more difficult to move players around trying to find the perfect fit to his system, effectively blaming the players but also blaming the officials and anything else except himself.

As things stand, with no changes I think the record is under threat and I hope the team has enough to get past 11 points.

On the plus side, as the side gets more settled and used to possession for the sake of it way, the possession stats should improve impressively and maybe get to the 80% mark.

I'd been banking on some other teams getting points deduction, now that's not happened we're nailed on 20th place, sad state of affairs

If you leave a guy in charge who plays a system that is proven beyond doubt not to work but is too pig-headed to change then 10 points seems an ambitious target!

It’s absolutely pathetic isn’t it. But having looked at our remaining fixtures, I think 20 is a pipe dream if Martin stays unfortunately.

I think we need to be aiming for more this season than simply "beating" Derby's all time points record. This is a Russell Martin team that can achieve anything so why not make sure we alone hold the record defeat with a solid 10 or 11-0 loss as well?

I cannot see us getting 20 points. That assumes we play to our strengths but we won’t so I think we have to assume a hefty discount for the fact we are so badly coached.

Looking at the fixture list by the time we get to xmas there’s every chance we will still only have 4 points. Over Xmas looks more promising but we will be effectively down by then so god knows what morale would be like.

I will go for low teens - ramsdale will play a couple of blinders and there will be some meaningless matches in the Spring where the other team will be on the beach and that gives us a decent opportunity to pick up a win or two.

What a season this is !!!

If we are to go down, then the bonus of beating Derby's record low points, and an embarrassing double digit goal loss or two thrown in for good measure, would not just end RM's reign but more importantly maybe, just maybe, be the slap in the face to wake Dragan up that Rasmus W. Ankersen and the rest of his SR clown team are a bunch of frauds and need to be removed.
