Phew! We earned that and I'll never be anything but happy with a win. Great to get a clean sheet. Really pleased for Arma. And I'll like VAR for one night only. Briefly pausing the RM discussions might even help some enjoy the 3 points a bit more.

Why on earth did RM bring Tall Paul on in injury time when we were one nil up?

A tall, physical focal point for clearances and to occupy their defenders. Keeps the game stretched vertically for Everton.

In practice we didn't really get anything up to him, a d got no breaks that could have been passed into him. But there was an idea behind it.

It's hard to overstate the difference in atmosphere between being in the stadium and being on here

There it was utter delirium, camaraderie, some gallows humour and a sort of realism/optimism vibe

Here it is bitterness, sniping, sarcasm and toxic cynicism (with apologies to those trying to bring some level of positivity to proceedings)

In theory I guess but as there were 5 minutes left and Everton had to score they were never gong to hold defenders back for a 6'7" striker. A fast paced striker would make more sense.

Onuachu is the type of player you bring on when you are 1-0 down with minutes left.

One thing we did better was defending corners, I noticed for once that we were covering the D at the edge of the area. Everton weren't easy because they had three good headers of the ball.

I think you are maybe overstating it the feeling. Plenty of discontent with the amount of backwards movement where I was, and more than a modicum of relief at the final whistle.

We weren’t  that great.

Get in! We got our first win in the league this season and a clean sheet. So pleased for Adam Armstrong to score 😊 was a lovely ball across from Sugawara after THB started the move 😊 hopefully he will go on a goalscoring run now. it was such a good breakaway goal we got as we carved them open. We had to dig in and battle, Ramsdale was amazing 😊 making serval top stops including an absolutely ridiculous one. KWP, Dibling and Fernandes were all class today 😊 COYR 😊

I thought it was an awful game between two very poor teams today, we were far too slow and passive (more than usual). Imo we played better in the home games against Ipswich, Leicester and even Man Utd yet they only yielded a point. Football is a funny old game. Not a pretty win but a vital one, so I'll absolutely take it.

Well it wasn’t great but we hung in there and while Everton might count themselves a bit unlucky with a few chances they had I think we deserved at least a point.

I thought Armstrong was poor apart from the goal. I did think RM got his subs just about right today, which was nice 😂

Agree, this was better today. I really don't like the "3 players at 60 min". It disrupts the team too much, especially as we tend to change a few positions at the same time as well.

No one seen the Wolves result yet. Really is in our favour! Take a break from Strictly.

Next week we play away to Winless Wolves,  huge pressure on them to beat us, expect they will but an interesting game, having beaten Stoke and Everton this week there will be a positive vibe around the club

Completely agree, probably not surprising when people on here during the game don't have the outlet of shouting or singing to release, thought it was good in the ground generally today, mostly positive around me and made a decent noise at times, nice seeing Martin finally getting to approach THE WALL for a final whistle celebration

Atmosphere was good all match though singing not that great.Thought it was going to be shit tbh. Luckily fans who go to the matches tend to want to support the team through adversity. A characteristic much under appreciated in this day and age.

What about if you attend a lot of the games like me and you still think you're a boring, whining, patronising arse?

Not our best performance of the season but we got the job done.

Most importantly, maybe in the long run, for me it was keeping a clean sheet. We still need to improve but hopefully we go to Wolves (winless) with a bit of confidence and if we get something it'll be a good outcome.

Phew. Did anyone else watching not think their disallowed one looked fairly comfortably onside? KWP looked a yard behind the others, I was mentally already in 'here we go again' mode. But then Arsenal's 2nd I thought Merino was clearly off and in Ramsdale's eyeline so happy to get the totally undeserved VAR boost for a change 🤣

Watched the whole thing, 2nd half we were definitely getting very disjointed after Manning went off for Dibling. They actually looked by far the likelier to score the whole half except for the goal!

- AA is not ideal out wide, especially on the left. Absolutely zero threat to go past anyone and when we had the right footed Cap'n Jack and Fernandes out there too it was too predictable. But he closes down and tracks back really well so I can see the argument for him.

- Dibling's decision making is still a bit hit and miss but at least he's direct and aggressive, and has the skill to go past people too. Think he may be better as a super sub this season so he can go at tired defenders.

- Was tearing my hair out at AA's volley into the stand and then that bizarre header from KWP's excellent cross that he somehow got ahead of and then it looked like someone had just thrown the ball when he wasn't looking and smashed him on the side of the head. But great finish from Suga's excellent low pass into the box. Too many chances to hit the target once but it's not like that's news after all these years!

- Several class saves from Ramsdale, MOTM for me for sure. Terrible defending though, totally free header for Keane?!? + Why is a f**king long ball over the top able to completely unlock our defence? Also, why was there absolutely f all pressure on the person playing the ball? Just can't let that happen at pretty much any level. We were lucky as hell not to concede.

- Some hoofs clear from really dangerous positions - FINALLY! Don't know if this is a manager thing or the players deciding to go with their own instincts. Possibly the latter considering RM was going on about how proud he was wearing played out on the ground just prior to our goal. But after they hit the bar, they were distracted and it was definitely the right decision to run / pass out. One occasion I remember KWP was surrounded, would have been suicidal to try and pass out so he hoofed it. Sure, it came back quickly, but that's still much better than losing it in / near our area.

- Our goal came, as most of our open play ones have this year, from a quick counter and attacking in transition! We just look so much better when we do this it's ridiculous. Archer has enough pace to be a real threat in behind. THB is actually really good playing those midrange passes.

- I just don't understand why no-one on the staff can see that when Cap'n Jack has the ball in the inside left zone in midfield and turns back towards our goal, it is f**king RED ALERT every time. Other teams are clearly using it as a trigger to press because he plays some absolute hospital passes to the midfielders and fellow defenders. Also when he's under pressure near our area he is terrible at trying to play past the first line of the press. Couple of terrible giveaways luckily didn't lead to much, but against better teams...

Anyway, happy we avoided the worst 10 game start in PL history 😅

Jack Stephens was Everton's best player! How we preserve with him God and Russell only knows! Awful!

Some very loose passes today. I stopped counting at ten. And why oh why does he insist on repeatedly turning back inside and passing the ball towards our penalty spot? We all know he’s going to do that and so do the opposition. They use it as a signal to bundle forward.

I am pleased and surprised to get 3 points. But martin is delusional - outstanding football today apparently. I saw a toothless side play slow football and flatter to deceive whilst conceding chance after chance to a relegation rival and be kept in it by our goalie. This wasn’t the vindication that martin seems to think.

Tonight I'm just happy and relieved that we have won a match. We played with more flair and drive and it paid off. We need a youg Lallana in midfield and certainly not Captain Shoehorn. 'One swallow' of course but we can look forward to next weekend with a bit more belief. Well done lads.

Well said Charlie.  The Club needed a slice of luck and fortune to “get on the board”, and got it today while playing some nice Football mixed up with the familiar mistakes.    It was apparent early on that Everton had come to play conservatively; let Saints boss possession and look to mount occasional counter attacks.  It was therefore, a surprise to me that we persisted with three CB for so long, even if Stephen’s drifted into midfield at times,   Manning as a wing back for 70 minutes also struck me as odd - it just seemed to stifle our attacking quality.  That said, replacing a spent Lallana at h/t was the right decision and holding Dibling back after recent exertions fair enough too - though perhaps Dibling on earlier and Stephen’s off earlier was the better approach.

Thought KWP was outstanding - got forward, picked out progressive passes and defended well when called on.   Ramsdale made some key saves, Fernandes again impressive as an attacking midfielder, Armstrong’s goal well taken and he played well in the wide role.  Harwood-Bellis the pick of the CBs and the Airibo, Dibling Sugawara cameos all contributed something positive.

You’d have to be a complete meanie not to feel some relief and happiness towards RM getting his first Prem win, yet fair to say there are many continuing doubts about his capacity to manage at this level.

I’m getting pissed off with being called Lucy Pinder every time I back our manager on here… it’s testing mine and Lucy’s relationship quite frankly

Superb result, get in, Up the Saints

I attended the game again this week after a traumatic holiday in the valencia region and the team delivered thankfully a slightly stress relieving performance.

I like many on here wouldn't have Stephens anywhere near this squad, he's 1st division quality at best.

I like the game mostly. I was concerned about Everton before the game but after seeing them today not so much.

I feel we could have got more today if we tweeked a few elements.

-we need to speed up our game play, at times it seemed the was no urgency. We let them reset and didn't take advantage of players out of position.

- we need to every now and then kick the ball away from our 18 yard box and I'm sure I swa Russell tell ramsdale that in the 2nd half.

- we need to shoot at the goal more. We don't shoot barely at all. We almost look like we are waiting for the perfect tap in rather than taking the shots from awkward angles. We know that this works as bree score against stoke and he's a defender. Just think what our forwards and midfielders could do if sometimes they tried.

I'm really glad var went our way twice today but it did again feel the officiating was very one-sided. And again heavily influenced by shit housing players like pickford.

Hopefully this can be the start of our run so bring on wolves

Excruciating to watch as Saints once again play the game as if they don't want to score. So slow and negative. We get up to their area and pass back to our own keeper, it's infuriating.

Great to get some points but what an awful game. If the board and RM think this justifies them destroying the beautiful game then I have no hope for the teams future.

Bloody hell, glad you're back safe from Valencia, hope you weren't caught in the floods?

And couldn't agree more on the shooting and I have to add crossing - just look at Liverpool's equaliser against Brighton today, Gakpo curls in a cross and it goes in. Simples. You don't cross or shoot, you don't score. Just saw on motd our xg was 0.67 Vs 1.47 for Everton so we just aren't creating enough.
