Co-commentator wraps up his day of evidencing that he doesn't know what he's talking about with "James Bree won't score a better goal than that", when he scored a better goal than that in an earlier round of this competition.

Haha my main takeaway from tonight was what a consistent plum the mystery co-commentator was. At least it took my mind off the footy 😁

Never in doubt, surely our academy produces better players than Lesley, do we really need poor loan players taking up spaces and confusing Russ even more

What was it Chelsea paid for him - £23m? For that, you’d expect a bit more than the turning circle and mobility of a supertanker and the first touch of a concrete mixer.

I don't think he'll be sacked, relegation is priced in, SR won't want to pay out yet more compo for another failed manaer, they see RM as being able to get another promotion.

The fans are just collateral damage, we couldn't go down with 'nine' points could we?

We could quite easily go down with substantially less than nine points.

Against Stoke’s reserves yeah, whatever floats your boat I suppose

We won a cup tie, scored three goals and could have had a couple more with better finishing. If you can’t enjoy that, you’re going to be severely disappointed when Russ gets sacked (and he will eventually) and quelle surprise, these players make the same mistakes under the new manager.

In other news, Brentford drew 1-1 at home to a Championship team with 70% possession, so we’ve had a much better night than them.

Watching Les play actually makes me appreciate JWP a lot more. If only we'd taken him on loan instead of Cornet and Les.

Can only echo what others have said. That was a poor team performance and will certainly have damaged the confidence of our defensive players. Very poor in an attacking sense as well. A lucky shot, a soft pen, and a free header being our only real threatening chances. Stoke's reserves probably made the better attacking chances tbh.

What was lucky about the shot? Great strike.

Suga saved us conceding a third, and Bree gets his second late goal of the cup to get us the win.

As always Martin will look at the possession, their few chances and our errors. We can all look at a dominant team failing to press most advantages. Also that teams will always get gifted at least one.

Martin took off Archer, AA and Fernandes. That left us with TP, Sule, Cornet, SAA and BBD late on trying to get a goal. But boy we struggle to move into anything direct. TP crying out for a cross. It was a poor couple he got in the end. Sule did well for the assist, but very little else other than a poor touch. BBD anonymous. SAA did okay with very little to do. Cornet is incredibly rusty.

Without Fernandes, who had taken a knock, we lacked creativity. Aribo was needed all over tonight, in a Smallbone like role, to keep things together. For the Leicester game I thought Les should have been the one to come on. I now wonder why he was on that bench. A couple of good passes into space, but well off in breaking them up, first tough and tackling.

A strong 40 odd minutes, without pressing our advantage undone in a second and a fairly disjointed struggle over the line.

Take the result but an underwhelming performance overall. Lesley had a mare, Ramsdale less than convincing, Sugawara poor, Cornet very rusty, Fraser a nonentity, BBD added nothing, even Fernandes had an off-day.

Tried hard to throw it away at the end but Bree came to the rescue...

Squeaked through against a second-string back four that had only played 11 first team games combined!

Where are we getting nine points from with this guy running training, setting tactics and picking the side?

Under Koeman we lost 0-1 against league one Sheffield United who fielded pretty much a reserve team in the same competition. Martin > Koeman

Watching that mess was a thoroughly dismal experience. Virtually zero creativity. Stoke had a couple of kids in defence yet how often did saints put any decent balls into the box. They get into our box on a couple of occasions and panic stations from “premier league” defenders defending like schoolboys.

I think he meant we were lucky Bree saved his manager again, the one who won’t use him in the PL despite looking far more solid and focused than most of the other junk wearing red and white stripes.

I'm still not quite sure what to make of Sugawara. Good in possession on the whole, he makes really good and seemingly tireless runs forward both inside and outside. Seems to have no clue what to do on set pieces and also loses his man outside far too often. Great ball round corner for AA who should have played Archer but closed his own angle and shot. Won the pen due to the defender being naive. No idea what he was doing with their 1st goal. Saved Ramsdale's bacon though with that clearance, that was crap keeping.

Would like to see him cross it more but not sure if he's been told not to.

70%.

Rookie numbers. They need a rethink.

Just out of interest what specific elements of that crap did you enjoy, bar the final score?

The worrying thing about the club is who sanctioned these signings?

Ugochukwu was utter crap. Slow, ponderous, can't turn, doesn't bust a gut.

Bereton-Diaz was like some random fan was given a shirt to come on and watch play pass him by.

Cornet was dreadful, he can run, but that's it - although I think I can potentially see someone good, maybe ...

Fraser was off the boil again. Really glad he wanted to come and can't fault his effort, but he's not in the game right now. I'm not even bothering to mention the bizarre Woods and Edwards signings ...

These were all signed for this season and to counter balance Archer has something about him, so does Fernandes, but neither shone tonight.

Summer recruitment looking poor.

TV Camera just panned to Russel who was in discussion with someone who looked like Graham Potter, surely not?

It’s Gio or notnowcato I reckon, Martin was saying how good is this huge possession and he was laughing like a schoolgirl

Two Premier League loan slots taken up with Cornet and Ugochukwu is some going.

Cornet is just bloody awful, he almost makes Sulemana look competent.

I can’t understand Ugochukwu, Chelsea fans were up in arms when they loaned him out, god knows why !

Amazing. Who was signing off these players, and on what basis? Cornet, Fraser, BBD just stopping Sam A-A getting minutes, utterly ridiculous.

Strange. Half an hour ago when I said we were playing well, everyone was laughing at me and saying the score was the only stat that mattered. Now we’ve won, suddenly it’s, "yeah but apart from the score, what was good about it?"

TBH I don’t know what the datum is for Saints any more, but I’ll take winning a cup tie and scoring three goals any season.

If he was playing poch ball he certainly isn't going to be suited for our style.

Yep, seen absolutely nothing from those 3 that justifies them over Sam A-A. Sure he'll make mistakes, he's a kid, but that's how you learn. Not like he could've lost us any more points!

Cornet is another ‘run around’ merchant (when he can be bothered) and no end product. He’s like Sulemana except for a purple patch once upon a time at Burnley.

Ugo put in some decent performances for Chelsea. But a couple of months with us and Martin has managed to get him (up) to the standard of everyone else.

Southampton boss Russell Martin speaking to BBC 5 Live: "They [Stoke] defended with big numbers and caught us in a moment on a counter-attack and nearly did again later on in the game. So the boys came through the moment in adversity and we won the game with some quality from [James] Bree."

OnSouthampton's performance: "So many players on the pitch haven't been on their recently, so we have to take into consideration that a lot of players are playing with each other for the first time in a long time.

"I'm really pleased with the character within the group, I learnt a lot about some individuals tonight and we got through it. At the start of the night, it was all about winning the game. it's not easy the cup. You have to respect it."

Managed to scrape through and hold on against Stoke reserves. That takes some real character. So pleased for the boys.

For the third year running.

I was optimistic when Darren Mowbray came onboard as he’d uncovered some decent signings for Aberdeen.

Wonder how involved he is in the signings ? Either he isn’t identifying the players, or Bitcon, Dyson and Martin aren’t listening.
